No clue what you are talking about:

Protected class is a term used in United States anti-discrimination law. The term describes characteristics or factors which can not be targeted for discrimination and harassment. The following characteristics are considered "Protected Classes" and persons cannot be discriminated against based on these characteristics:

* Race - Federal: Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Civil Rights Act of 1866

Just what I said -- race is a protected class

^^ Naw, it's just an argument of semantics it looks like.

Yesterday my husband and I went to Lynnwood Grill for lunch. There was a toddler at the table next to us that was not screaming and obnoxious. Just chilled eating Cheerios and playing with crayons. Parents cleaned up after their kid and wiped up the Cheerios as they were leaving too. It was a refreshing change from the last two times we've sat next to children in restaurants

Ahh yes, I remember all of those times as a 7 year old when I was infinitely thankful that my parents let me come out to a nice restaurant where I had to stare at food I couldn't identify and joyfully sit quietly while I was told repeatedly not to squirm / scratch / talk. Man, thank GOD they saved me from an evening full of TV dinners and cartoons. That would've been torture!

Quote :
"it shouldn't mean that your kids always prevent you from doing normal, family activities."
Agreed, and your kids shouldn't prevent me from doing normal, adult, activities without having to listen to your children.

Quote :
"Kids have just as much right to go out and enjoy a restaurant as anyone else."
I was unaware that anyone had declared enjoying a restaurant as a human right. Also there is plenty of precedent with denying children privileges afforded to adults.

Quote :
"Just because I don't agree with your opinions on restaurants banning children, or when you should or should not remove a child from restaurant, doesn't make me a bad person."
Yes it does.

Quote :
"Some of you argue that parents should either be able to afford or a babysitter or not go out to eat.... why? Why should you be the one to determine what they should do?"
Good point. Fuck, why do we discriminate against people who can't afford to go out at all! Free meals for everyone! Who are you to be the one to determine that just because someone cannot afford something they should be denied it.

Quote :
"Maybe you should go to restaurants where people don't take kids."
That is exactly what these restaurants are trying to do.

Quote :
"If I take a kid to a restaurant, and the people behind me are constantly saying "fuck," or talking about anal sex with double-headed dildos, I'm not going to tell them to change their topic of conversation."
Yes, you would be perfectly within your rights in a restaurant to ask people to keep their voices down if they were discussing topics you felt inappropriate. I daresay that the majority of people would politely do so. If they persisted it would be perfectly appropriate to ask the management and allow them to decided since it is their establishment. If they decided against you then you've got the option of taking your kids elsewhere or sitting and listening to the conversation.

Quote :
"The amount of time my coworkers' skip in order to take their kid to the doctor, or to stay home with them, or to see one of their plays/graduations is ridiculous.

I wonder how things would go if I were to take off-the-books vacation time to pursue one of my chosen life pursuits?"
Bingo.

got behind a woman at subway today who had a rabble of four running around

Instead of just ordering for them she had to round up each one at a time to figure out what to put on the sandwich. Took me 20 minutes to get a sandwich.

Again, we're arguing for two different things. I certainly knew what a Happy Meal was when I was 7. I knew what I liked to eat on the buffet at Quincy's or Western Steer when I was 7. My parents didn't take me to fancy restaurants and I never once argued that doing so was a good idea.

I've already stated that I had no problem with restaurants banning children. I wouldn't ban them from a restaurant that I owned. There's plenty of precedent with protecting children as well.

But I would be protecting children! By not allowing kids into my restaurant, I would definitely be protecting them from the furious wrath of the angry guests they annoy.

i leave early or work from home plenty, though not to the point it would be considered sickening. either the company has shit management (oh sure just do whatever) or you work more than i do. this really is a topic for another day though.

much of this thread IS pretty hateful though. i can understand the point of the policy for some places, but not the arguments anti-children people come up with. perhaps i was just blessed with patience.

If you don't have a problem with it why did you write a 5 page essay about how much of a problem you have with it? You also called it "Dangerous" so I assume that's another problem you have with it.

+1 (with one minor exception... )

I have no problems with kids in an environment such as a restaurant. However, if as the gaurdian/adult/parent in charge you cannot contain a child's behavior to a respectable level, the business should reserve the right to evict the party from the premise. That should be a private business' right.

I was at the Angus Barn last night with my wife and her family, and some family brought a kid and it started crying... I was about to get pissed, but as soon as it started crying once we never heard it again... not sure if they took it out or just quieted it down.

I dont see why its so hard for parents to just not take thier kids to restaurants until they are old enough to appreciate it and behave there.

Guess what, you had kids, you can't do all the things you used to do.

I was at Costco the other day and someone's caterwauling toddler was acting up. A Grandma type figure came
over and said something to the kid (couldn't hear),and the kid was like and shut right up. Better yet, it was quiet when I saw it about 20 minutes later.

That elderly woman needs a gold medal for parenting, and probably has 15 grandkids.

Man I wish this was true. I have to use vacation if I do ANYTHING involving my son. Lately I have been going back to work after my husband comes home to make up the time (or going in on the weekend).

Before I had kids, I was fine seeing kids out at the table next to me; however, I have seen kids at a bar and then I was quite weary as I wouldn't expect that.

My husband and I do take our son out with us and then go for a family walk. We deem this as family time. We wouldn't go to the Angus Barn (well I personally haven't had anything there I liked) with him. We do tend to go to more family oriented places and stay away from typical date times. I don't mind a restaurant banning kids. I probably would never frequent it even if I had a babysitter. I know my siblings have also stated this and they do not have kids.

I love this sentiment. "You too will be an asshole in public with your kids. You'll seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!"

That certainly wasn't the case even as recent as 10 years ago. And I sure as hell can't imagine the sort of behavior you see in public happening in our grandparents' generation.

One thing wrong about parenting these days; no one teaches patience. Adults use distractions to help their children behave (ie: Nintendo DS, Ipods, portable DVD players, etc). Nothing wrong with having those devices, however, there are appropriate times and places for those things.

It's not trolling just because it makes you uncomfortable. The topic of this thread is closely tied to how children behave in public so it seems on topic to me.

I agree with McDanger. You don't have to hit your children to discipline them (even in public) and it really doesn't help in the long run. Use the car as time out or just take them home if they're not willing to cooperate. Worked for us.

I never got hit in public. What I feared worse was my mom's pinches on my butt. They hurt like hell and I knew that if I made a sound, I would get a second helping and then some... I learned real quick; don't act up and I don't get pinched... Easy enough.

So to some degree, I agree with McDanger

So basically you agree, in your actions, with all of us that parents shouldn't be bringing kids to nicer restaurants where they will bother people, but you think we're all going to change how we think?
