lol reading the "rotten" reviews on rotten tomatoes make me giggle so much ...

like should you really be able to review a movie if you can't remember who said the specific lines you reference in your review??

it kinda saddens me that as much as i enjoyed the hunger games... that thread is 12 pages long and the avengers ... might make 7

Less arguing going on here. More..."THIS MOVIE IS AWESOME!!" Not going to be a long thread when there's not a lot to discuss except for how great the movie is.

Ok how about this.

Will any movie featuring just one of these guys (such as Iron Man 3) be able to live up?

I think they will go in at a hudge disadvantage now that we've been shown that the entire team can work so well together.

I mean a solo hulk movie? Cap? Not too exciting a prospect now.

iron man 3, thor 2 and cap america 2 are all scheduled. .. and ruffalo signed a 6 movie deal so I have to assume atleast one of those will be a hulk movie.

so in other words... we shall see

^ Agreed,

It will take a helluva story line and stronger side characters to keep solo movies at this level. But honestly, they should not try to make the solo movie to reach Avenger's levels.

The solo movies have done rather well alone. Writers and directors do however, need to make sure that the story lines fit into what they have done (already a given I know).

Iron Man yes. Thor, I dunno. Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk? Yes please. I think a duo film with Hawkeye and Black Widow could work as well.

i think the reason this was so good is that the superheroes didn't have 2 hours of their own movie

honestly they are boring on their own for 2 hrs....20 minute focuses on each is perfect

The Captain America movie was really bad IMO. It will give you some background on the all-spark, er, whatever that all powerful cube is that is the focus of this movie though if youre that interested.

I really enjoyed the Thor movie and I would recommend it to see the history between him and Loki.

I have to say again how awesome the guy that plays Loki did. He is a big reason this movie was so good.

agree with everything here

Cap's solo movie was probably my least favorite. I'm sorry but I will never be able to look at Chris Evans as Capt. America. He is too young and just does not sell the character to me. He is definitely a better Johnny Storm. Anyhow, that being said he isn't terrible either. I just think there are better people for the role.

The overlying reason this movie is good has already been stated.

I have to say I'm a bit surprised by all the hate for the Captain America movie. I thought it was easily better than the Thor and Hulk movies. I'd also say it was a better movie than Iron Man 2, though Iron Man 2 was significantly more entertaining.

I don't know how you can say it was better than Thor....

I thought Thor was pretty good.

The fight scenes in Capt America were incredibly dull in IMO. Other than capturing a moderately accurate portrayal of his origin story, it was just meh at best. I was so bored watching this movie.

Better than Iron Man 2? What are your criteria for a good comic movie?

Looking back, it is a little weird that War Machine isn't in the movie. Still an awesome movie -- just in thinking back on it, he should've been there.

Also no Portman made me sad

I was honestly happy that there wasn't really a love story. I'm so tired of that stupid shit forced into a movie for no reason. I agree that War Machine should have been there.

I'm also praying that they bring in Vision. He is by far my favorite Avenger. However they can't bring him in without Ultron and they are clearly going the Thanos route with the next villain so I have no idea when or if we will ever see Vision.

They would probably have to do a separate solo movie to introduce his character. .

Chris Evans convinced me in Avengers he is cap.

The solo movie was boring, slow, and not even entertaining to me. The fight scenes were just not very well done.

One thing I do love though, is that Cap will shoot a fucker.

If I remember right, in the avengers, he is the only one that actually killed someone (threw that guy off the helicarrier)

Thor was my least favorite movie, but simply because the setting was the middle of no-where and the big machine he fought was not exciting to me (but I enjoyed the movie)

Captain America was enjoyable. I think it was merely to catch the essence of the time and background to a lot of history. Chris Evans is and always will be Johnny Storm, but he is more than a serviceable Cap.

Incredible Hulk (Norton Version) was destructive and fun to follow. Ruffalo sp? did a good job of making me forget about Norton, but can Ruffalo do action sequences?

Iron Man 1> Iron Man 2 but I love them both.

Now that I think about War Machine, I wish he did have an appearance in Avengers... now that would have been sweet.

^^^ You can't have Ultron without Hank Pym. Who hasn't even been eluded to.

Oh, and good call about the staff, didn't even think about the mind gem..

And we know the gauntlet is definitely going to be part of the series - they already made a replica of it and it was in the Thor movie. Then you know, Thanos. Awesome.

I know we'll never see the Mandarin and Iron Man. I think it may be concerned too racist nowadays..

I believe in the comic, Tony figures out the scientific makeup of Asgardian "magic" because he learns how to detect it, visually see it's energy signature, and how to nullify it to a certain degree.

Someone correct me if I'm off. It's been a while since I've read my Iron Man collection.

Capt America isn't too much of an issue. You get to see where the main important artifact comes from and the weapons/shadow organization that are referenced at one point (a moot point overall). It has some plot points that come up and make you go "huh, neat" in reference to Avengers, but nothing important.

Thor, however, gives the background of the main villain, details a similar artifact, details some important minor characters, and explains how the movie is moving more towards a universe as opposed to just Earth. It has a ton of background for the Avengers movie.

I've probably been to a theater twice in the last decade but I'll probably go see this... are all showings 3D for blockbuster movies these days? I don't want to pay premium for something that I feel adds no value.

I watched it in the IMAX and it was honestly one of the best 3D movies I've ever seen. Since it was converted post-production, the 3d was very subtle throughout the movie and really just gave the feeling of immersion that extra umph.

The comment above about "thank god there was no romance plotline" really made it clear to my why this was such a fucking awesome movie.

It was told as a writer would write a COMIC BOOK, not a screen play. Which means you can skip, omit or completely ignore many "staples" of a traditional screenplay. You can ignore character foundations and frankly you can ignore character development as well. Avengers might be the only movie I've ever seen where it focused almost solely on the development of relationships between characters, not individually.

You can ignore romantic storylines, you can ignore the single crisis-climax-anticlimax crescendo of actions movies too. There were 3 simultaneous crises going on during this movie: The possibility of the Avengers never assembling, the conquering of Earth by Loki, and the death of millions by nuclear annihilation. They were all averted at different points in the movie, by different characters, for totally different motives.

To answer Lokken's question "Will any movie featuring just one Avenger be able to live up?"

If the directors continue this baseline of telling a serial, metaverse based story (where continuity, background and characters work together), then absolutely. I do think Iron Man, Hulk and Black Widow honestly have the best developed "Ultimate Marvel" plotlines to really succeed on the big screen.

The problem traditionally has been that having a solo movie meant exactly that. One hero, one villain for 2 and a half hours. Tell me how many comic books (solo books included) have you read where a hero didn't encounter, at least in passing, a couple of other heroes or villains in a book (or more importantly in a story arc).

I think you could very easily tell the tale of any of the Avengers as a continuum. Why wouldn't Hulk play a cameo appearance in the next Iron Man? Why wouldn't Captain America end up crossing paths with Black Widow, Nick Fury, or a host of other heroes?

They at least explained why Portman wasn't there (something about sending her off to do research elsewhere to keep her safe). I guess they ran out of budget to pay those other actors for such small parts (would have preferred Portman to Paltrow). But what I don't understand how there was no reference to Betty in any way. Isn't she supposed to be the key to keeping the Hulk under control? General Ross would have been a nice touch too since he's the one Tony spoke with about recruiting Hulk initially (end of the Inc Hulk movie).

I kinda figured that War Machine wasn't present because Col. Rhodes was probably under orders to help deal with some other element of the crisis. Maybe helping stage the military response. I presume that he's still an active officer and can't just go don the suit whenever he feels like it (at least not in the movie continuity).

I saw it in 3D for the midnight release and then went to see the 2D version Saturday. The 3D version was much better. The way the Cosmic Cube's energy was done it 3D was pretty awesome and the 2D's energy looked bland. I also noticed some of the Chitauri blood hitting the screen in the 3D but didn't notice it in the 2D version but I might not have been paying as much attention the second time.

^^I read somewhere that it was the Mind Gem. Which would make sense given the color and powers of the scepter in the movie.

I really hope they don't redo the infinity war. Way too many one-off and bit part super-god characters.

I kid, I kid. In all seriousness what were the plot holes that you saw? I believe if you knew about many of the events in the comics some of these hole would be filled. I didn't notice anything very large. Plus it's a comic book, it's supposed to have some unbelievable/awesome stuff to it.
