Please anyone explain to me how any of the characters besides adam are likeable 6/1/2012 1:21:38 AM |

I was unaware of the fact that a show can only be good if the characters are likeable and relatable.
I guess that makes iCarly the best show ever! 6/1/2012 2:26:26 AM |

besides the main character, the other characters' storylines are pretty weak. there is no buildup week to week, the main character's line is the only one with any kind of plot. I am aware that typically a show is focused on the main character, but a lot of time is spent on the others and it is pretty much a waste
the british chick, the roommate, the jewish girl are just written in doing random shit from week to week 6/1/2012 2:52:22 AM |

OK CHIEF, iCarly is a good show leave it out of this
I'm telling you just how I feel.
^^^So Marnie's boyfriend arc, which started in the first ep and has been active nearly every episode since, is not "plot"? and is "random shit"?
The british chick's continuing situation with the middle aged guy is "random shit"?

This show should be called 'Hannah's Diary'. About a girl who isn't special trying to 'make it' in the big apple.
EXACTLY like 5 million other vapid bitches who keep an uneventful diary that think they are something special and that other people want to hear about their boring life.

They showed it at the end of the episode before last- Hannah never seemed to have any interest beyond coming over to fuck (never asked him anything about his life), so he didn't give a fuck, then they got into the fight, he is yelling "you want me to be your boyfriend? Is that what you want?" cut to them all in the cab, he is now boyfriend, Hannah started giving a fuck, so he did too6/5/2012 12:59:23 PM |

^^I've only read one Gawker recap, I posted it on page 2 but the link isn't working for me right now. It was pretty mindblowingly terrible. If you think Girls "tries too hard" then I don't know how you can get through a single sentence of Gawker's inane ramblings. They define trying too hard.

The Drummer from Bad Company's daughter and Brian Williams' daughter lie down together on the douchebag's living room carpet and begin making out. Why? Who knows. But rest assured that millions of 24-to-28-year-old girls, whose very existence had previously been effectively denied by the entertainment media establishment, were very grateful last night that HBO gave a platform to Laurie Simmons' daughter so that she could at long last explore stories—for us by us—about how 24-year-old girls dig making out with each other. There is literally nothing else like it on television. May she continue breaking down barriers. I bet you never saw chicks making out with each other on Entourage. 6/6/2012 8:51:05 AM |

It seems that a lot (not all) of the people who are hating on the show fail to understand that the spoiled-ness of the girls and all the trust fund shit is intentional and purposeful. It'd be like people getting mad at the writers of The Wire for writing so many cops, drug dealers, and drug users into their show. It's what the show is about.
Also, I don't think the show is brilliant or a work of genius or anything, but I do think it is a very well-written show from a talented, witty, bright young woman. 6/6/2012 1:23:46 PM |
aimorris All American 15213 Posts user info edit post |
There are parts that are very well written and witty, I agree. I enjoy most of Hannah and Adam's scenes together.
I just think the show fails when she's writing scenes for the other characters. Scenes like the one with the douchebag are just so forced and over the top IMO, considering how real/normal the rest of the show tries to be. Jessa's boredom came off as cartoon-y and the guy was like a spoof of somebody that really likes Entourage, and it felt like that even moreso when they actually mentioned the show. 6/6/2012 1:48:14 PM |

^I'll agree that that guy's reaction to the wine spilling on the rug was over-the-top douchy and a bit implausible. It was still pretty funny, though.

There's also the newer cultural phenomenon that shows have to hit the ground running, fully crystalized, or people will abandon them. Part of this is our leaning toward an instant gratification society, but a big part is that so many shows lately have arrived with superb episodes and no time to settle into a rhythm. The first season of the Simpsons is pretty terrible compared to what came two years later, but it was worth the wait. Obviously a drama is a bit different, but it's still something to consider. 6/6/2012 1:59:40 PM |
aimorris All American 15213 Posts user info edit post |
That might be true for some shows but I don't think that's the case for Girls. There are the extremes like GGMon and boobs that were never going to like the show, no matter how well it was written. And then you have people that checked in after hearing the buzz, decided the subject matter/tone/whatever just wasn't for them, and checked out.
I don't see many people who started on the first episode ditching the show because it hasn't materialized into a masterpiece of television yet. 6/6/2012 2:30:23 PM |

Definitely leans male. I think the social criticism of that generation is to central to call it a chick show.
