i gave up on this show
just wanted to mention that you could theoretically have a diesel engine that needed no flow of electrons to start and run. diesels don't have spark plugs. it'd have to be small enough that you could start it with a hand-crank like early cars and tractors and you'd need a mechanical fuel pump, but it's not all that far-fetched.
high compression ratio of a diesel might make hand-crank starting unrealistic. might have to roll down a hill and pop the clutch.

Yea Wraith you should have remembered that Linus is starring on Person of Interest. He probably doesn't have time to do an appearance on here too.
As to the steam-engine debate, I agree. My coworker has been screaming about that from the get go. Why has nobody built steam-ships? Why did they say that sailboats were all chopped up for their wood? I know for a short while that their would be LOTS of anarchy going on. But there are still a lot of steam engines around the country and world. Once we understood what had been knocked out and still worked, it seems logical that steam engines would be pulled out of museums and other places (like Tweetsie, although that might be a bitch to move) to put them back in service. For that matter, steam shovels, steamboats, hell even steam tractors. It would not be the most efficient way of doing things, but it a proven and viable alternative. I can't believe this shit would just sit around for 15 years before somebody finally figured it out, and I hope it was just due to the narrow world view we have as seen by the cast at present. 10/17/2012 11:51:14 AM |

Forgot to mention earlier, but in the scene where the train was fired up and preparing to leave, it bugged me that they played the engine whistle sound, but did not have the live engine do it at the same time. The shot shows the top of the train, but no corresponding steam vents when they blow the whistle. Nit picky shit, I know, but just the things I notice in TV shows and movies. 10/17/2012 7:41:45 PM |

Coworkers dad who works at Cape Fear Community College got this email today:

Just FYI in case anybody lives down there and wants to check out a filming location for this as it is being shot.10/18/2012 2:57:28 PM |

i said that on page 3... did it all the time at the golfcourse with a mitsubishi tractor with a dead starter that was pretty much fubar (bolts out... still couldn't knock the starter off the bell housing) but still worked so we snagged it on days we were really desperate.10/18/2012 3:16:12 PM |

There are also modern commercial companies making new steam engine designs that are more efficient than the old-timey ones.
These companies might be overrun, but I think people would realize the value in letting them re-tool, and start cranking out the steam engines.10/18/2012 10:54:11 PM |

Last episode wasn't as bad as it has been so far. They're reusing some plot devices (for example Charlie going "undercover" to kill a man) but everything not involving Charlie was ok.
Also, I looked it up...none of the episodes have been directed by the same person. Only two episodes (the first two) have the same head writer. I don't understand how a series can go on like that with the main voices changing up so much. 10/31/2012 1:31:00 AM |

Anybody watch this weeks episode? I liked the fact that the ship shots were all filmed on the USS North Carolina. The most unconvincing part of that shot to me was the deck scene with the wooden deck. Don't see too many wooden decks on modern cargo ships.

Last week's thing with Peter Pan and the Lost Boys was so dumb.
I like that they introduced a parallel story for Nora, but what I don't understand is why the hell if Mia already found their dad, and they were so safe in Texas, why the hell was she back in Pennsylvania?

Yeah I was like "Wait, they spent half a season getting this kid back, just for him to go out like that?" I had to chuckle when he ate it, also had to laugh because a kid with no military training who had never even seen a rocket launcher before managed to operate it without much issue in the heat of the moment.
Also once Miles handed the gun guy the little "sonic cannon", it was annoyingly obvious he was about to use it on them. Though the previews and this "Tower" have me at least interested in the rest of the season. 3/27/2013 8:09:06 AM |

Plothole 1:
If the helicopter has to carry the amplifier around with it to get power, then wouldn't it allow other devices nearby to get power too? Like the rocket launcher? Sounds like if the resistance could get their hands on some AA weapons or whatever they could simply use them when the helicopter was in range.

^Yea I was totally thinking that as well. The fucking amp had enough range to allow it to power two helos simultaneously, which could theoretically be flying at some distance from each other, yet they needed an additional pendant to power the little missile launcher? Seems to me like when the helo starts arriving, shit should just start powering back up, until it flies away again, or you blow the chopper carrying the amp up. 3/27/2013 2:56:44 PM |

Those are some very skilled helicopter pilots. Obviously they had to have been pilots before the blackout (No way you could train new pilots without actual cockpit experience) but after 15 years without flying I'd think they'd be a little rusty. 3/27/2013 10:36:03 PM |

I think more Randal will be better for the plot. He's the one character I'm really interested in.
However, it's pretty clear the mom has a similar past with Randal the way Miles did with Monroe, and she is a much less interesting anti-hero. 3/29/2013 7:00:53 PM |
