I just heard about this "statehood vote" in Puerto Rico; I for one hope they become the 51st state, and that generally the territories end up having a voice in the election (by means of abolishing the Electoral College). 11/7/2012 8:45:36 AM |

the maine house and senate races went as expected with the incumbents in the house keeping their seats and king easily winning the vacant senate seat.
the ballot measure to re-legalize gay marriage passed, which is not that much of a surprise, but we'll see if it stands up during the next round of referendums. 11/7/2012 9:58:02 AM |

It's the day after and looking back, it was an awesome election night, and the majority of the races I listed at the start of this thread did break the way I was hoping for. I recognize you can't win 'em all, but especially at the national level things are moving forwards.

I heard in Durham that they had a "party" at the Mortco for the election.... i could think of about a million things I'd rather do than that. 11/7/2012 3:51:49 PM |

I don’t know think that party, at least in the traditional sense, is the word I’d use to describe watching election night returns. There was ample pizza, alcohol, and wonkiness though. Everyone had their own prediction map for the night to match up to the white board as it got filled in. Nate Silver fans did the best. My map had Romney doing a little better than he did, but whatever, I had fun. 11/7/2012 4:14:33 PM |

Yup.
Even when they've nominated two moderates, those same guys ended up having to pander to the far right evangelicals and teabaggers to get elected, and that pandering then burns them in the general.
I wasn't pissed that the GOP couldn't pull it out, necessarily, but was disappointed Obama won. It's hard to me to think of someone the GOP or a 3rd party could have run that would have forced me to vote for Obama. He's been so unbelievably bad as a president.
Bush for 8 years and now this mongoloid for 8 years.... holy fuck. I'll be surprised to see what's left and what our deficit is.
One good thing about Obama, though. I've loved his foreign policy and the fact that he's essentially told Israel to screw themselves and handle their own business. Unfortunately, his Keynesian policies and Obamacare are going to be painful to endure.11/7/2012 4:29:37 PM |

Blacks and hispanics were ~23% of the vote this time.
And this is only going to grow overtime.
I'm not trying to say the GOP is racist, but their message is to maintain the status quo, that has built up historically to be bent towards whites in this country.
The status quo doesn't make sense for our evolving demographics. 11/7/2012 7:05:40 PM |

^^He got less votes than McCain last time around. If he just got all of McCain's votes, he'd be the President-Elect.
Despite the right-wing airwaves sounding as enthusiastic as ever, I know a LOT of conservative people who stayed home or didn't vote for President at all. And these people think Obama is damn near the anti-Christ, but they just couldn't pull the lever for Romney regardless.
Shoot, Bush got more votes in 2004 than Obama did in 2012, despite population growth and all the rest.

It really is quite stunning to see the divide.
I never would have guessed that if you count only the white vote then Romney would have won:
CA, IL, WI, MI, OH, PA, VA, NV, CO, NM, NJ, MD and probably MN, NY, and CT. That would leave Obama winning 7 states.
No racial group had less than a 20 point gap in preference.
That type of divide doesn't bode well for future race relations.

Whites, blacks, hispanics, asians, and the rest all get along fine within the Democratic party...Maybe it's because every time one of them tries to talk about minority-specific issues they aren't shut down with "RACE CARD RACE CARD RACE CARD"!

History classes need to cut some of the early history stuff so they can spend more time on recent American history, specifically race relations and the Republicans rise to power based on racial baiting that turned poor whites against poor blacks. There is no reason this stuff should be surprising. 11/8/2012 8:17:57 AM |

The GOP is made up of two kinds of people: Racists, and non-racist people who tolerate racists in order to win elections. Anti-racist whites and non-whites who suffer racism naturally aren't drawn to this kind of tent. It's really not hard to understand.
Here's a handy little map of racist-tweet-density from the election:
http://geocommons.com/maps/210024
It also doesn't help that the GOP pundits respond to losses with heavy racial components by calling all the Obama voters lazy takers who just want stuff, and mourning the loss of the "traditional white establishment." Like, seriously, there's no way the GOP could be any greater of a white supremacist party unless they literally wore the white hoods and everything.
If you're in the GOP, and you're not a racist, but you put up with and humor the racists, you're part of the problem as much as they are. Kick them out or suffer 100 years of losses.

after the election, O'Reilley claimed that Obama won because "traditional america is dead" and that 50% of Americans are people who "want stuff", so they voted for Obama.

The full quote:
Quote : | "“The white establishment is now the minority,” O'Reilly said. “And the voters, many of them, feel that the economic system is stacked against them and they want stuff. You are going to see a tremendous Hispanic vote for President Obama. Overwhelming black vote for President Obama. And women will probably break President Obama's way. People feel that they are entitled to things and which candidate, between the two, is going to give them things?”" |
