He's actually right. The protesters are making a conscious decision to be arrested. The officers clearly state that if you don't leave a certain area within the next 5 minutes, you'll be arrested. Anyone that gets arrested at these protests isn't taken by surprise. In fact, the point is to get arrested.

Choose four volunteers to drive side by side in their cars around the beltline at 55mph during rush hour. Do this twice per day every day for a week. You will bring the city to its knees.

Or take the French approach and create roadblocks around downtown during protest days. Use donated cars, just park them sideways in the street and run. Lawmakers enjoy being trapped with their constituents and an enjoyable bonding experience will be had by all.

Ignore the General Assembly building, they don't care if you protest there. Instead be more spontaneous; target small government ceremonies, building dedications, etc.

Or realize that you lost the election and go home.

Buying used school buses or using church buses is the best way to deliver 50 protestors quickly and closely to the target ceremony without anyone noticing. Dump the protestors and get the bus back to the home base. Then the protestors can appear silently out of nowhere and begin to cause their little scene. The state will be more reluctant to seize church property.

Or you can realize that resorting to such tactics indicates your viewpoints don't represent those of the majority of North Carolina residents.

The civil rights movement only succeeded because the federal government took steps to protect it. There is no such sympathy for these protests, and they will be crushed. In fact, law enforcement is no doubt being advised and equipped by federal government resources in how best to deal with large arrests. It's good training and a proper use of homeland security money.

I've never participated in a protest, so I would like this dynamic explained.

Why not just ignore them? What if the government pulled a Gandi and just cleaned up politely after them?

^ There are some elements that love to stir up confrontation for those reasons but on many other occasions police have reacted with brute force and have been violent toward more peaceful demonstrators. During Occupy Raleigh I will say the RPD handled things without violence even during more contentious moments. They were very self aware of how it might come across so every response was carefully thought through.

Police give a rough estimate of 1,000 and the NAACP said 4,500. My guess is it was somewhere in the middle.

I checked this out, here are my observations:

1) They need to tell people that it is completely safe to go inside, you will not be arrested if you do not want to. There were way too many people in the quad, everyone should have been inside.

2) It's really boring, these people are not rowdy enough.

3) Everyone was being too compliant. I get not wanting to be rowdy, but you can be a little disruptive or obstructionist in a non-violent way. Instead of following the cops every order, when they tell you to leave sit down and make the cop move you. Let the news see an old lady getting dragged by the cops and see what that does to your message.

4) Uh... where did everyone go? They go into session at 7, the gallery is open to the public. Instead of starting at buses, come back in and watch the session. Do you think they will be successful passing a bill be verbal vote if there are a full gallery or protestors recording and documenting everything?

5) Why is everyone filing into the rotunda? Walk around the building, clog up hallways, be generally annoying.

6) Be more disruptive

An interesting note from the N&O on Moral Monday protester demographics:

The most obvious place where the arrestees differ from the norm is political affiliation. Seventy-seven percent are Democrats and only 1 percent are Republicans -- hardly surprising when they are protesting Republican policies. Republicans should be worried, however, that 21 percent are unaffiliated. That is very representative -- and unaffiliateds, or independents, are key to Republican electoral success. Losing them means losing elections. So, if I were a Republican leader, I would not be happy to see unaffiliated voters so well represented in the Moral Monday crowds.

The NAACP said 6,000 showed today. I put it closer to 3,000 based on aerial shots and comparing them to previous weeks. Either way it was the biggest turnout so far. WRAL reports at least 120 arrests today. The total is north of 550.
