"RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State senior running back Tony Creecy has been named a first-team Academic Momentum Award recipient from the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) Scholar-Baller program.

The award is given based on each student-athlete’s academic improvement and the impact each student-athlete’s academic performance had on his or her classmates, teammates, academic advisors, and professors. Only 10 male and female award recipients from NCAS partner schools were selected for the first team. "

http://espn.go.com/blog/acc/post/_/id/66954/on-the-rise-nc-state

Quote :
"With the exception of Florida State and Clemson, nobody in the ACC’s Atlantic Division was able to finish with a winning record against league opponents last fall. Wake Forest and NC State combined for a 2-14 ACC record, with the Demon Deacons accountable for both wins. Overall, the Coastal Division was much stronger, but there’s plenty of room for improvement in Charlottesville.

Which ACC team, though, will make the greatest turnaround in 2014?

Last year, Boston College held that distinction, improving from a two-win season in 2012 to a seven-win season in 2013.

Next on the rise: NC State.

Here are three reasons to believe NC State will be significantly better in Year 2 under Dave Doeren:

1. An improved quarterback: Doeren has already declared that former Florida transfer Jacoby Brissett is his starting quarterback this fall, despite the return of Pete Thomas. Doeren seems very confident in Brissett’s abilities, and recently praised his leadership skills. Brissett has spent a year studying the system and is ready to take over a position that could use an upgrade. Thomas and Brandon Mitchell combined for 11 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

2. A favorable schedule: The Wolfpack should start out 4-0, sweeping its nonconference schedule with wins over Georgia Southern, Old Dominion, at South Florida and Presbyterian. With two FCS schools in the lineup, there's no excuse not to. If they deliver, they will already have surpassed their 2013 win total and started the season better than they did last fall. The bigger difference, though, should come in games against Wake Forest and Boston College. They've got bye weeks to prepare for road trips to Syracuse and rival North Carolina, and they get Georgia Tech at home. It’s a schedule that sets up for success.

3. A talented incoming recruiting class: Doeren and his staff have been working hard, and it’s paid off, as their class is currently ranked No. 37 in the country and includes five four-star players, including two players from the ESPN 300. The highlight of the class is Kentavius Street, one the nation's premier defensive linemen and No. 68 in the ESPN 300. Street committed in December, and flips from ESPN 300 guard William Richardson and four-star cornerback Troy Vincent Jr. followed in January."

Oh shit, Pete Thomas is transferring.

Quote :
"RALEIGH, NC - NC State head football coach Dave Doeren has announced that senior quarterback Pete Thomas has decided to transfer following his graduation in May. Thomas started six games for the Wolfpack last season.

"Pete has been a great teammate and a very positive representative of NC State Athletics,” said Doeren. “I have really enjoyed coaching him and want him to be successful as a player and in life. Going forward I will do anything I can to help him through his transition as a transfer. He will be missed as a teammate, player and person in our locker room."

Thomas, a communication major, played in nine contests, including six starts, for the Wolfpack in 2013. He finished the season ranked ninth in the ACC in passing yardage per game with a 185.2 mark and in total offense with 203.3 yards per game.

A native of El Cajon, California, Thomas started 21 games at Colorado State from 2010-11 before transferring to NC State.

“I want to thank Coach Doeren, my teammates and all the fans,” said Thomas. “I have great respect for this staff and I believe they will turn this program around. I’m proud that I will earn my degree from such a great university.”"

McClendon better be ready. Apparently when Doeren was talking about him recently, he said he had the same skill set as Brissett and you could change them without changing the offense.

^^^ Why? He gets to transfer to another school where he will play.

I just hope we find a way to redshirt McClendon

Why would you feel sorry for Thomas? Dude got a chance to go to college for free and be a QB in a major conference. He just was not good enough to suceed, but he at least will get his degree.

I guess there's still a good chance McClendon will redshirt, since both Shireffs and walk-on Josh Taylor took some game snaps last year?

Classy responses from you guys and Twitter. Some of you are just the worst.

Guy was a 4* recruit and has started for most of 3 years at DI. What have you done?

He wasn't great, but he wasn't meant for DD's system.

Pete Thomas sounds like a classy guy but I'm not going to lie, I will not be missing him. He was not cut out for D1 football as his stats from State and Colorado clearly reflects this. If we expect him to change from now to next season when his track record shows otherwise then that would be unrealistic. I would prefer if McClendon red shirts but I don't want to be stuck in a no QB situation like we were in ALL last season so I'll say red shirt McClendon and play Brisset unless something unfortunate happens and we have to pull McClendon out of red shirt.

I honestly think he could have been decent if he had a decent supporting cast. But whatever, he came in, did what was asked and needed without complaining, and he now realizes it's in his best interest to go elsewhere. No reason to keep saying "he's not a DI QB". Just wish him good luck and thank him for being part of the wolfpack.

He was a terrible fit in this system and with the patchwork O line we had it made it even worse.

Good kid, from a depth point hate to see him go but addition by subtraction. Should open up a scholly to add another kid.

Jacoby will start and I would assume The Sheriff is his backup and TA Jr. will be third string.

We should be a heavy run oriented team next year.

(Stanley off the team as well, another open slot)

I dunno, Colorado plays easier competition and he still threw more interceptions than passes in his career there.

When you’re not a superstar you can't call the shots. Would Wilson be able to skip spring practices under Obrien if he sucked and still be starter?

Quote :
"No reason to keep saying "he's not a DI QB"

No reason to say the truth? He seems like a good kid but as a football player he wasn't up to par. This is how the world operates. If you'e not smart enough then you're not getting into the university you want. If you don't graduate with a high GPA then you're not going to get the job you want. If you throw twice as many interceptions than touchdowns then you're not going to be a starting quarterback in a DI school for long. I was patient with him until it took him several games to throw a touchdown pass (for our team).

Garrett is still on the team as a QB though.

We have plenty of depth there and it looks like DD is quite content with Jacoby and TA Jr.

yeah, i wouldn't consider two walk-ons and a true freshman as "depth".

(but apparently DD is ok with it, since he switched Sheriffs to RB)
