the fear seems to be that in the NHL he won't quite have the hands or quickness necessary to fill the net compared to the other options around that pick

however far be it from me to campaign against a big bad motherfucker who will GETINFRONNTATHANET

shit i just hope we draft someone who won't wait us out two years and reenter the draft

Lawson Crouse - http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=770455
Zach Werenksi - http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=771618
Mitch Marner - http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=770909
Noah Hanifin - http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=770698
Dylan Strome - http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=771435

So who are they gonna take? Ron has been quoted as entertaining the idea of trading the pick. I really, REALLY hope that doesn't happen. The top 10 in this draft is LOADED.

That would be incredible.

http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/nhl/carolina-hurricanes/article25055719.html

Quote :
"It’s hard to predict how this week will unfold for the Carolina Hurricanes, whether it will be momentous or mundane.

The Canes could work a big trade during the NHL Entry Draft in Florida or routinely make their draft picks and head home. It could be intriguing or simply business as usual.

What we do know is that the Canes have 10 picks in all, including the No. 5 selection in the opening round Friday night. As for whether they will use that fifth pick, or all 10, general manager Ron Francis says that remains to be seen.

“Every draft is critical and every pick is valuable,” he said. “We’ve done a lot of homework for every pick we’ll make. When you look at our team there are a lot of areas where we need to improve. We’re looking at all aspects.”

The Canes conducted 70 player interviews in the NHL prospects combine in Buffalo, Francis said. They’ve scheduled more this week before the draft in Sunrise, Fla.

But the draft is where general managers can meet, wheel and deal. In 2012, when Jim Rutherford was general manager, the Hurricanes upstaged the first day of the draft in Pittsburgh by trading for Penguins center Jordan Staal.

Three years later, Francis is hinting he’s willing to make some significant changes to the team. Could that begin this week?

“There’s been interest from other teams in the No. 5 pick,” Francis said. “Depending on who’s sitting there at the time, we might decide to move back in the first round and look to add some assets. But we’re comfortable at 5.”

Here’s a look at what might come:

Trade or no trade?

The Hurricanes have their first-round target set and believe a very good player can be taken at No. 5.

Many mock drafts have Carolina taking Boston College defenseman Noah Hanifin, but other possibilities include forwards Mitchell Marner (London, Ontario Hockey League) and Lawson Crouse (Kingston, OHL), and defenseman Ivan Provorov (Brandon, Western Hockey League).

No one can say if the eventual choice will be in the Canes’ lineup next season. In 2013, the Canes took Elias Lindholm at No. 5 and the Swedish forward has been on the NHL roster the past two seasons.

“Even at 5, with a young player, when you introduce him to the NHL right away it’s difficult to make an impact,” said Tony MacDonald, the Canes’ director of amateur scouting.

But if the Canes’ targeted player is off the board by the fifth pick, the Canes may change directions and work a trade.

Francis said this past week he hopes to re-sign both team captain Eric Staal and goalie Cam Ward to multiyear extensions. He also noted both have no-trade clauses in their contracts.

But what about a player like winger Jeff Skinner? He has no contract restrictions. And Skinner may not be the only Canes player drawing trade interest.

Could make for a busy time on the draft floor at the Florida Panthers’ BB&T Center.

Hanifin or Provorov?

Noah Hanifin seems like an obvious pick for the Canes, if available, but Ivan Provorov’s stock has been steadily rising.

“Hanifin is a big man who skates well, understands the game, plays a mature game,” MacDonald said. “Provorov has really gotten better in the last year and become a more complete player. Like Hanifin, he has a great sense, great feel for the game.”

McDonald compared Provorov, who’s listed at 6-feet and 201 pounds, to Canes defenseman Justin Faulk, an NHL All-Star. Both have a low center of gravity and exceptional core strength.

“In stature and style, he reminds me of Justin,” MacDonald said. “He has a great hockey IQ and skates very well.”

MacDonald said Provorov began as the seventh or eighth defenseman for Russia when it put together its national team for the 2015 World Junior Championship, only to emerge as a standout on the back end.

“By the meaningful games he had progressed and was logging a lot of minutes, used on the power play, killing penalties,” he said.

Hanifin, who’s 6-2 and 205 pounds (with 6.1 percent body fat), played well for the U.S. in the World Junior, had a strong college season for the Eagles and did well at the NHL combine. Some believe he could be taken as high as No. 3 in the draft, behind Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel, and that the Arizona Coyotes may not pass on him at 3.

“The type of defenseman I want to be in the NHL is one capable of playing against forwards like that,” Hanifin told the NHL media at the combine. “That motivates me a lot.”

Marner or Crouse?

If Hanifin is off the board and Mitchell Marner is not, Marner could be donning a Canes sweater on Friday.

He’s not big – 5-11 and 163 pounds – but the center has been compared to Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Tyler Johnson of the Tampa Bay Lightning is another example of a smaller forward who plays big and scores.

“He’s probably as skilled as anyone in the entire draft,” MacDonald said. “Patrick Kane was a slight player physically as a junior, probably not as big (as Marner.) Like Kane, Marner is slippery, elusive and smart. He’s a prolific scorer who can finish his opportunities.

“He also plays the game well away from the puck. A lot of offensive players can be one-dimensional but Marner is committed to backchecking and playing a 200-foot game.”

Crouse is the prototypical power forward, a 6-4, 212-pound winger who helped Canada win the gold medal in the 2015 World Junior. He couldn’t match Marner’s numbers – Marner had 44 goals and 126 points in 63 games for London; Crouse 29 and 51 in 56 games for Kingston – but MacDonald said Crouse could be a dependable offensive contributor in the NHL.

MacDonald said Crouse has drawn comparisons to Chris Kreider of the New York Rangers although saying Crouse was not as good a skater as Kreider.

“But Crouse is an NHL skater and still evolving as a player,” MacDonald said. “He’s not a Kreider-type sniper but he gets to the net and plays a physical game.”

Not just the first round

It’s easy to be fixated on the first round, but Justin Faulk was a second-round draft pick in 2010 and Canes center Victor Rask was taken in the second round a year later.

MacDonald, with a long memory, likes to reflect back to 1998, when Carolina took forward Erik Cole in the third round, center Joseph Vasicek and winger Tommy Westlund in the fourth and winger Jaroslav Svoboda in the eighth. All played on Carolina’s team that reached the 2002 Stanley Cup final, and Cole and Vasicek were members of the 2006 Cup champions.

“You can get good value on your picks all the way through the draft and we’d like to cash in this year,” MacDonald said.

Francis said it’s a deep draft, with a lot of possibilities.

“We have a lot of picks,” Francis said. “We could use them, or we could move them.”

It could be some week.

That would be the kind of dumb fucking shit Jim Rutherford would do and I hope that this new regime is not going to be duplicating the mistakes of the past. There's going to be an elite player available at 5 whether it's Hanifin, Strome, or Marner, and the Canes need to stay put and take whichever one is left.

I doubt Ron is looking to give up on Skinner, but this is the Canes we're talking about so if a deal is made I'm sure it will be a terrible one.

I fully expect Hanifin to be sitting there at 5 tomorrow night and they'll either trade the pick for a shit package or draft Crouse. #size #grit

If Canes fans are pissed about this draft or trades, then they need to stop watching hockey. Francis has made some great picks and trades here. People need to relax.

Signed Nestrasil at a very affordable price. Nice work!

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2505679-re-ranking-every-teams-prospect-pool-after-2015-nhl-draft/page/14

Quote :
"Existing Talent: Haydn Fleury, the reliable two-way defenceman whom Carolina took No. 7 overall in 2014, had a down year offensively, but offence isn't really his calling card. He and physical defenceman Trevor Carrick—who impressed as a rookie pro—make defence a strength for the Hurricanes.

Unfortunately, other positions aren't nearly as strong. With all due respect to Alex Nedeljkovic and Rasmus Tirronen, there's not much in net, and the forward cupboard is entirely lacking in impact prospects.

Key New Additions: Loaded on the back end and in dire need of help up front, the Hurricanes selected...defenceman Noah Hanifin. It was the right choice; he was the best player on the board, and that's the pick to make. Carolina did a good job addressing need with later picks, adding a clever scorer in Sebastian Aho, a power forward in Nicolas Roy and a new goalie prospect in Callum Booth.

Summary: The Hurricanes' top pick gives the team an enviable list of prospect defencemen, and the club also did better than many at replenishing its overall depth through the draft. "

Quote :
"Noah Hanafin - D

Strengths

The indisputable best defenseman in this year's excellent draft, virtually every part of Noah Hanifin's game could be considered a strength.

Offensively, he boasts a strong point shot, a good passing ability and a lucid hockey sense; defensively, he uses his lanky 6'3" frame to be effective with both stick checking and body positioning. He is a confident leader and is also comfortable on special teams.

Weaknesses

Hanifin's only weaknesses are actually areas that merely aren't noteworthy strengths.

Said Kirk Luedeke of Red Line Report (via Oilers Nation), "He tends to be a body-leverage, angles type of player. ... He doesn't have a robust physical element to his game."

NHL Ceiling

Hanifin boasts by far the highest chance of reaching his potential out of all the Hurricanes' 2015 picks, and his potential is a first-pairing defenseman of possible superstar-caliber. Justin Faulk should be licking his lips.

Sebastian Aho - F

Strengths

Sebastian Aho is a feisty, tireless winger with fantastic speed and quickness in skating and shooting. He has excellent offensive creativity and reminds some of a Jeff Skinner-like player, irritating to opponents and impossible to remove from the thick of play. While his size is average at best, he is comfortable playing a lot of minutes and against bigger opponents.

Weaknesses

The Finnish winger receives mixed reports about his defensive dedication and can be a bit of a puck-hog offensively, attempting to do everything himself. His playing style may not translate perfectly from Europe to North America.

NHL Ceiling

Aho may not be big or well-rounded enough to become a first-line stud some day, but he could function well as a second-line scoring winger capable of ranking among the top players on the 'Canes in goals.

Callum Booth - G

Strengths

The 'Canes were surely thrilled that this projected second-round pick, the second-best North American goalie in the draft, according to NHL.com, fell to them early in the fourth round. Callum Booth has good size at 6'3" and operates well down low, sporting fast reflexes and quick pads while using his frame to cover the upper half of the net.

Weaknesses

Booth tends to get beaten in the upper corners as he is slightly too eager to drop down from the butterfly position. Without a full season as a starting goalie in juniors (not unusual for goaltender prospects), the sample size from which to draw conclusions is lacking.

NHL Ceiling

One of the best goalies in this year's draft, the 'Canes surely hope that either Booth or 2014 second-round selection Alex Nedeljkovic will pan out as Carolina's goalie of the future. Nevertheless, Booth is at least one, if not two years, removed from going pro.

Nicolas Roy - C

Strengths

Another player who slid significantly down the board and into Carolina's lap, Nicolas Roy makes up for Aho's size with his 6'4" frame that will likely carry 220 or more pounds on it by the time he reaches the NHL. Roy is a traditional power center in the Jordan Staal mold, noted for his aggressive and physical style, net-front presence and two-way focus.

"A big-bodied, imposing presence on the ice who threatens the opposition with his deadly medley of size and skill," writes Curtis Joe of Elite Prospects.

Weaknesses

Roy hasn't been a top scorer in the QMJHL and isn't an especially gifted sniper himself, instead creating space and screens for teammates. His defensive vision could improve some, as he can occasionally become too puck-focused.

NHL Ceiling

While Roy has flashed tantalizing glimpses of top-six upside, he most likely projects as a powerful third-line center—a complementary piece on an NHL team.

Luke Stevens - LW

Strengths

The son of Kevin Stevens, a former 50-goal scorer with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the early 1990s, Luke Stevens has impressive raw abilities. As a 6'4", 190-pound high schooler, Stevens' size and heritage clearly excited the 'Canes.

Weaknesses

Enrolling at Yale in the fall, Stevens needs to develop more of an eye for the goal and to fill out his body to become a more impactful player. He's a project prospect requiring a lot of development.

NHL Ceiling

Stevens likely won't be more than a fourth-line grinder at the NHL level, and he'll need to specialize on that style of play in college to even eventually reach that humble ceiling.

Spencer Smallman - RW

Strengths

Spencer Smallman isn't a very small man—6'1", in fact—and plays a grinding, workmanlike game that makes others around him. Kyle Woodlief of USA Today describes him as a "meat-and-potatoes guy" with poise under pressure.

He upped his stats with QMJHL St. John's from 12 goals and 35 points to 23 goals and 56 points to get drafted in his second year of eligibility.

Weaknesses

Offensive production still isn't through the roof for Smallman despite considerable improvement, and one must wonder if the 19-year-old might be closer to his ceiling already than the 'Canes realize. There isn't any one particular trait about Smallman that makes him stand out.

NHL Ceiling

Smallman is a safe selection with a relatively high likelihood of reaching the NHL but little chance of being more than a depth player. He could be a bottom-six winger and reliable penalty-killing forward.

Jake Massie - D

Strengths

Jake Massie wasn't on the NHL radar at all until the last year, during which he's grown three inches and committed to the University of Massachusetts, according hockeyrecruits4u.com. He's an aggressive defenseman in all aspects, both checking and advancing the puck up the ice.

Weaknesses

Given Massie's status as a late bloomer, the 'Canes aren't going on much when making this pick. Massie is a long-term prospect, needing a lot of improvement in his consistency and commitment to his position, and he's the epitome of a late-round flier.

Interesting to note is part of Massie's self-description to Michael Smith of Hurricanes.com: "I like to take risks. ... I like to join the rush and make risky plays."

NHL Ceiling

If a number of things click perfectly over the next few years, Massie could theoretically develop into an offensively dynamic second- or third-pairing defenseman with considerable size to boot.

David Cotton - C

Strengths

Texas native David Cotton is already 6'2", over 200 pounds and getting bigger. The Boston College commit could become a monster by the time he reaches his early 20s. Cotton rides his physical dominance over his opposition in all three zones, but that could change against tougher competition. He's known for his hockey intelligence and ability to take over a game.

Weaknesses

Cotton hasn't been tested much against other NHL-caliber prospects, so the potential he's demonstrated to date could fade in years ahead. Scouts, such as Curtis Joe of Elite Prospects and Jeff Cox of SB Nation's College hockey, respectively, share conflicted opinions about his skating speed.

NHL Ceiling

Cotton and the aforementioned Nicolas Roy are somewhat comparable players: big-bodied centers with some risk but upside as second- or third-line behemoths down the middle.

Steven Lorentz - C

Strengths

Another late bloomer with a lot of physical growth in recent years, the Hurricanes' second overage selection of the draft is just coming into his own as a hockey player. His fast growth pace helped him sneak into the draft class.

Weaknesses

Six players on the OHL's Peterborough Petes alone scored more than Steven Lorentz, who managed only 37 points in 59 appearances, did. If he's not a star at the junior league level as a 19-year-old, it's highly unlikely he'll ever find himself playing in the NHL.

NHL Ceiling

Lorentz could shape up as an AHL career player or a depth NHL center, probably not surpassing the role of a mere squad-rotation player. For now, it's hard to foresee what Lorentz's future holds."

I expect Ron to keep shopping Skinner and Semin but have no idea who's going to bite. Pittsburgh has been the most interested in Skinner so far SURPRISE SURPRISE...

"The former 40-goal scorer with the Washington Capitals had three more years left on his deal at $7 million per season. The buyout, which will come once Semin clears waivers on Wednesday, means he'll count $2.33 million per season on the Hurricanes' cap for the next six years.

Semin, 31, will receive $14 million over the next six years as his payout."

It'll be interesting to see where Semin lands. I think a lot are speculating that he will wind up in Detroit. I can't remember, and won't Google before I post, if the Canes have been active recently on opening FA day? Seems like this might be the year they do something fun.
