hopefully the profile 1.1 update also includes some other goodies, like (dare I even say it) in-game XMB, DTS-MA decoding, and XviD/DivX support.

^^ Yeah, I'm hoping it will allow for DTS HD.

I'm not flaming on Halo 3. My neighbor had it and we played the hell out of it, and its super fun online. I got more play out of it online than resistance (and I own it) simply because of all the different options. So not trying to be a douche, just my opinion. The graphics and physics are awesome in Resistance. I think the AI is fantastic as well, especially on the harder modes. Not necessarily any better than Halo 3 though.

Seems like a good deal. You should just think about what you want to play the most though. If its only sports games and multi plat games, I would probably get the 360. However if you like racing games a lot, you aren't going to be able to beat Gran Turismo 5 when it comes out.

Sports and racing? No question. 360.

There are tons of titles of each genre for 360, and the ones that are multi platform titles (most games sadly) you want the 360 version for multiple reasons. Way more online support/multiplayer, performance is usually better for now - faster frame rates, and achievements are fun. I'd go with the 360 all the way, and go to the 360 thread to my post that explains which ones to get for the new revision boards and the like. Worth it.

Sony does have Gran Turismo, but you'll be waiting til late 2008. The prologue doesn't count...it's kind of a demo on roids so far as I know. That's not to discount PS3...it's a fine system, just needs about another year before it starts to shine. By then Home will be out, multiplayer might actually start working (friends lists/XMB in game) with firmware updates. In the meanwhile, if you like pretty individualistic games with a wide range, mostly single player of design....and want a top notch movie player....go pick one up.

I'd personally suggest owning both by mid 2008 if you are a gamer, but that's assuming a gracious bankroll.

honestly GT 5 is great in the graphics but doesn't have the value of Forza 2. Plus if you throw in the Microsoft wheel you can't beat that for racing games. I'd go 360 hands down if all you want to play is sports games and racing games. Plus Dirt is on both consoles and PGR4 is alright if you are into the whole kudos thing. Personally I just stick with Forza 2 (which you get free with an xbox purchase) and Dirt. Both are very realistic and have great graphics (not on par with GT 5 however) and Forza is loads of fun online.

Multiplayer doesn't work on the PS3? It doesn't have achievements, in-game friends lists, or gamerscores, but multiplayer works just fine. I realize you think those things are critical to a complete online experience, but let him make his own decisions on what's worth $50 a year.

^There is a wheel for the PS3. It's called the Logitech G25. It's got pedals and everything, look it up. Dirt has been released on the PS3 as well. It's also awesome that you can draw conclusions about a game that's not out and you haven't ever played. Prologue will have multiplayer too.

I mean, I would recommend the 360 as well, but you don't have to outright lie to the kid.

^well considering I asked like 10 times in this thread and in the others if the PS3 had a wheel and no one knew shit about it....i'd say I wasn't lying. But if getting an answer to a question requires me to 'lie' about the PS3...then I guess I'll start doing that.

Quote :

Again, I've said "Dirt has been released on both consoles" half a dozen times. Read plz.

and GT has always had the same game play just better graphics each release. I have played GT HD and nothings changed but made it more pretty. But lets go on what we do know. Does GT 5 have damage? Simulated tire wear? simulated fuel? modifications from drive train swaps to engine block swaps? The stuff a real race team would do to their cars etc? Hitting a wall and having to continue driving with the wheel turned 90degrees to the left because thats the only way you can go straight due to damage steering rack.

Do you really have nothing better to do than troll this thread? Yes, I haven't bought a $200 racing wheel for a game that's not out yet. Obviously that means I don't know shit Meanwhile, you think GT HD is the same game as GT5 and can't use google.

yes it has a wheel, it can also use most PS2 wheels as well.... USB FTMFW

the logitec wheels are considered top notch, full 720 steering, can be used on the computer as well, force feedback. (yes I have one)

Quote :

yes, yes, yes, as well as tweaks to all aspects of the suspension (depends on upgrades (in past games)) gt3 had tire wear and drive train mods, gt4 included fuel as well.

damage and "engine swap" (they have engine upgrades and such (part replacement etc)) are uncertain. Damage has been speculated but i wouldn't count on it. engine block swap has not been in any GT game so I'd say it's doubtful...

I'm not lying to him shrike, but if you think that multiplayer doesn't need improving on the ps3, you are evading a pretty serious issue that we all at one point have been begging for them to fix....

[1.]Yes it is somewhat functional, but in my opinion - if the only way you can see what your friends are up to is by quiting your game out completely and going back to dash - that's just plain fundamentally broken/missing. That goes beyond a simple inconvenience. It's a rung below Nintendo's friend codes in terms of multiplayer futility...just one step up.

[2.] If I can't have a [universal friends list] that stays constant regardless of game, its a notch even closer to Nintendo's friend codes. Only difference from the big N is that it's easier to input someone's name than a code, but it's still a bitch and a half to manage friends "intra" title to title.

[3.] Socially speaking, you don't have hardly any flexibility of inviting and joining others, regardless if you could actually open up the XMB in game (per #1 point) or not. That's big. In Live you can invite, join a chat WHILE IN GAME, join a video chat, see a log of who you played with, send feedback or kudos, see what others are playing and with who and what level, details, what game mode, go see who their friends are - t's all seamless and socially robust. You don't get that in PS3

[4.] Achievements and Gamerscores go hand in hand with scores/rankings/performance that's tracked universally for everything you do, whether it's fart around in Pac Man or highly competitive COD4 or PGR4. It's all tracked and you can always filter 'friends scores', 'everyone on live's scores' so there's always fun and replay value in tackling things. This is big to the overall experience. A 'score' is the essence of gaming.

Yes, I do think these things are part of a 'this generation' online experience. MS raised the bar. OK, it costs 50$ a year. Chump change. I expect Sony to do the same, after all, it's what they promised...and if they want to compete they better get crackin.

PSN is the most laughable component of the PS3.

Laughable because they use the Sony Connect interface.

^^^I didn't say it was perfect, and I agree with pretty much all that. It needs a lot of improvements. I was simply responding to:

Quote :

There are thousands of people playing multiplayer games on the PS3. It works, just not as good as XBox Live in those ways you pointed out. And honestly, a lot of that Myspace/Facebook shit isn't terribly important to me. On that, Home also looks like a giant waste of time on Sony's part. Just give us some of the simple XMB features, like in-game friends lists, and the ability to choose our own music. That would alleviate 90% of people's complaints. Not everyone playing a game is looking for a social network.

yeah that was a bit of a hyperbole...it is so frustrating that you could say that.

good news is that sony hooked up with limelight networks that helped on Live! and Steam and that'll pay dividends for them soon enough if they do it right. Regardless if positive or negative, 2008 will be a big year for PS3, mark my words. I'm thinking positive. Hopefully they worry less about Home (it really looks like a 2nd life) and worry about these issues and then they will start to kick into higher gear.

I will say MS got their market pegged this time around. The whole gamerscore thing is a brilliant way to convince people they "have to" buy more games. It's a like a giant competition to see who can spend the most money.

Yeah it's great to a point.. Everyone loves to 'level up' or score in game. Part of why current games like Call of Duty, Halo, Warhawk, Battlefield titles are popular is because you have traceable stats and scores, medals.

Achievements are the same way, they assign them to some outlying and challenging aspects of skill in a game which is briliant, becuase it induces a LOT more replay and time value in the game to hit the marks. Without them there as a medal you can reach for, you strangely miss them. Unlike steam though where they are in place but assign no universal 'score', Live attributes them to that gamerscore making them mighty addictive.

Only problem is the tool bags who are score whores and will rent shitty titles that have easier achievements just to rank up. These are the same type of guys that pull stunts like login with their friends and stat grind in games to exploit the system.

Wonder if PSN won't so something like this soon..

downloaded the High Velocity Bowling game from PSN last night just for something fun on the side. It actually does a pretty good job of using the six-axis ala Wii Sports. It isn't going to blow you away but I'm surprised Sony didn't actually have a few games like this up and running @ launch time.

thanks for the advice (keep it coming!). i guess gran turismo 5 is the big tempter for me to get the ps3...on the other hand, i thought the ea sports f1 game (from way back when) that i had on the pc was more fun than gt4...go figure.

does either one have a marquee f1/moto gp game? i'm not aware of any but that would be a huge factor in which one i choose.

how do you connect the ps3 and the 360 to psn/live? does either need a wireless adapter or do you just run an ethernet cable or some such thing to the router?

i guess what im also getting at is, once you buy either console, do you need to buy any additional stuff? adapters, chargers and the like.

and im pretty sure both play regular dvds, correct? what about divx/xvid?

Xbox360 comes with built in ethernet (you can run a cable from your router) but not built in wireless. You have to buy a wireless adapter (~$99) if you want to connect wireless.

Xbox360 also plays xvid/divx videos.

both play DVD. Xbox360 can play HD DVD if you buy the add-on (~$179). PS3 plays blu ray out of the box.

PS3 (I think) comes with built in ethernet AND wireless. (100% sure on the ethernet not so sure on the wireless)

The low end currently has wireless.

Speaking of which, I finally get streaming to work on the PS3 from my laptop using SimpleCenter. The system works pretty well, but the setup with my locked down wireless router was a bitch and because both the console and server services are supposed to be straightforward, I had to go port hunting on the internets.

Microsoft's WMP11 refused to work properly at all.

I also noted that the PS3 has trouble streaming high bitrate WMA clips and it would have to rebuffer at set intervals. No such issues with mp3. I'll have to pickup an Xbox360 wireless module to test out streaming on Xbox360.

yeah the wireless bit on the PS3 is pretty awesome. You don't have to buy crap...love that Sony did that.

However for streaming, go 360. It's seamless and works with damn near everything. Love it...totally replaces the need for a dedicated media computer. Just get WMP11, turn on sharing, and that's it. No more hard to work streaming and media center and firewalls and all that config anymore. Plus WMP11 is really cool

Just be sure in the Media Blade to hit X to switch to your networked computers.

Just so you know, that is not a GT5 demo. It is GT HD, which is mostly an HD version of GT4. The official GT5 demo is called GT5 Prologue and it should be availble in the US next year. It goes on sale in Japan on Dec 13th. Yes, I said you have to pay for the demo. The Japanese PSN had a Prologue Demo for free, but from what I understand, it is gone. Don't sell Forza2 short. Other than graphics and physics which I think are very good, just not great, it is a very fun game to play. Plus the online community makes Forza a great game. GT5 may get there, but as of now we are still waiting.

ok, I have one serious complaint with the PS3. It didn't come with an HDMI cable. I'll let it slide although for 'instant gratification' I had to buy a $60 hdmi cable until I order a cheaper one online and return the $60. But the one thing I won't let slide is the fact that they packaged it with a RCA cable and NOT a component cable. This thing is supposed to be an HD dream machine. Everything about it screams HD. WTF besides being cheap would they not at least package it with component cables?

(and yes I realize the Xbox 360 core did not come with component cables either but it also didn't cost as much as the PS3. The xbox360 elite DID come with hdmi however.

well, when you consider the fact that they've already given you several hundred dollars worth of electronics for free with the PS3, i wouldn't begrudge them skimping on a $10 cable.

although, I do have to admit it does leave a bad taste in the consumer's mouth, being one of the more visible things to the customer. Its a lot harder to quantify less fancy electronics than it is to quantify "shitty cables!"

Also, FYI, you can get a decent HDMI cable for ~15 bucks at Tiger Direct if you're willing to drive/pay a few bucks more than online

what about the HDMI cables available from Amazon for less than a $1 dollar buck (plus shipping)? most people on slickdeals seem to be satisfied with them.
