My iPhone 3G has really poor uneven and "muddy" backlighting in low light situations. On top of that, the LCD leaks through the area where the bezel meets the screen.

I think I'm going to swap it, but I don't know how I'd be able to show this at the Genius Bar. It's so bright in the Apple stores.

Got my 3G this morning ... Cant say enough about it... this interface rocks

By The Way ... We talked a little about the golf application that we were launching ... well ...

It went live this morning on the App Store!!!

Look up vCaddy (in the sports section) and buy it if you want golf GPS on your iPhone.

^me too. I think i'm waiting. The keys, brushed metal finish, 3.2MP sony camera, and 800 by 480 resolution appeal to me. I'll wait till the xperia comes out, try to get a hold of one, then decide.

I don't think they are going to downgrade the iPhone for a v3. If they do a slider keyboard maybe they could remove 3G too.

^haha downgrade? you mean upgrade? That's what most people complain about on the iphone. A keyboard isn't a downgrade. I want to be able to have the FULL screen to view AND be typing on a keyboard. Typing on the display is old school. It wastes display space. Plus most people agree typing on a nice qwerty keyboard is better and more efficient.

I've used an iphone plenty of time and i still find a solid, nice qwerty keyboard more efficient and faster. I'm pretty sure there was never an argument here. A physical qwerty keyboard has always been better than a touch screen one.

-i mean no matter how you say it. Hardware wise, a 800 by 480 display with a qwerty keyboard is still an "upgrade" from a 480 by 320 display w/o a qwerty keyboard.

i'm faster on the touchscreen..i can move my fingers a lot faster when i dont have to actually push anything down. of course my spelling errors increase a little bit the spell check on the iphone is great so that's really not an issue

I would prefer an actual keyboard to a touchscreen one, but thinking that there's going to be a "upgrade" to include one is silly.

Honestly what they need more than anything are more third-party applications that take advantage of turning the iPhone/iPod Touch sideways.

^^i have no doubt that you're faster, i'm just saying most people i've seen on an iphone aren't as fast as on a qwerty keyboard. It's just a small sample though.

Basically i'm saying if i had a choice i'd rather have a big slide-out qwerty keyboard (like the xperia) AND a touch keyboard on a high res (640x480/800x480) display, rather than no keyboard and a touch keyboard on a low-res 480 by 320 display.

-Plus on a physical keyboard once you get used to it you can type without looking at the display. Which is a plus. I'm not sure how well you can do this on a touch-keyboard.

I can type about 30 words a minute on the iphone. Not even half my normal typing speed, but its pretty damned good for a phone. I can actually be verbose in an email response and not get upset. The secret lies with the auto correct feature, that works really well. Otherwise it would blow.

Yea, the auto-correct is surprisingly good. Plus it learns frequently typed acronyms and words.

I'm impressed.

Can get to 40wpm in 10 hours compared to the 56 hours it takes with QWERTY.

I love the idea.. their website should show some videos though or maybe even some decent pictures. I dunno, just doesn't really show you the product. I had to go to youtube to find that video ^ to even see it in action

There's probably a section I'm missing on the site and I'll just come off looking ignorant though haha

I think you're right. There's not any videos. From what i can find most people can't get above 40-50wpm. I can type well over 100wpm on a qwerty so maybe i could get 50-60 on a frogpad. Who knows.

I did read that iphones won't pair with it because Apple doesn't provide HID drivers for Bluetooth keyboards. So there's no iphone support out of the box.

Wrong. Typing on the display is pretty damn new. The Origami interface from MS tried it commercially first, and it sucked pretty badly. The iPhone interface WORKS, and works well.

Not really true either. The learning curve to touch-typing on the iPhone is a matter of hours. I was typing 30wpm the same day I bought the phone. A full qwerty on a mobile device is not more efficient at all. Its massively less efficient in every way. More weight, more electronics, more power, more complexity. It may be faster, but you wont be getting over 60wpm on any phone, qwerty or not.

The resolution argument is retarded. The xperia has a SMALLER screen, with higher resolution. The iphone's screen is 160dpi. That's almost double that of a standard display. The higher res on the xperia will be almost worthless in practice.

The keyboard argument is based on personal taste and that's about it. Amazingly I can watch what I'm typing on my iPhone too! I've yet to encounter a real world example where a slide-out keyboard would have been better or easier, yet I've had several times where the touch keyboard made my life much easier.

That is not double a standard display. There's been devices out for years with 640 by 480 displays on smaller screens. Which means larger dpis. So the iphones 160dpi is actually pretty small for a display. Smaller than my 6 year old clie. Or am i misunderstanding your wording?

I think the xperias dpi is around 310. So how does saying the iphones dpi is 160, relate to it being above standard?

i guess i just like the higher resolution display. I have a Sony Clie from 2003 with a 480 by 320 display. I figured i should get an upgrade 5-6 years later. Plus full browsing with 800 by 480 will be easier than 480 by 320 (assuming microsoft comes up with a better browser, or there's an alternative).

In regard to the touch-qwerty being easier to use than a physical qwerty. Is that just your opinion from iphone use, or do you have anything to back that up? From personal experience i find a physical qwerty keyboard easier to use, and lets me type faster. I guess i value that difference if i can get another 15-20wpm out of it.

The more I read this thread the more I realize that neodata686 isn't going to be happy until his cellphone is a 24" monitor with a fullsized foldout keyboard with an integrated D-SLR camera, so there's really no point in discussing this with him.

^haha. i like complaining.

I like the iphone don't get me wrong, and it's interface blows everything else out of the water, but i have played with a few VGA pdas, and various other 480 by 320 devices and i can certainly tell a difference in resolution. Not to mention the browsing advantages 800 by 480 would have over 480 by 320. I know development will be a pain and changing the standard complicates everything, but i still like the higher resolution display.

on touchscreens other than the iphone i 100% agree with you that the keyboards suck--but the spell correct or whatever term they've dubbed it is simply amazing and the sole reason I can and do type faster on it. think about the mechanics behind pushing every button down vs just making contact with the screen.. the second takes less effort which equals potentially being faster. the only downside is of course not being able to feel the keys--but because of the spell correct it doesn't matter if you even hit the right places..only that you were close and that you (usually) hit the right number of letters.

i've typed words many times that had no resemblance to the right word and that no regular spell check would have figured out but this thing does it and does it consistently well. i've had two blackberries, two palm treos, two iphones, a few sony ericssons, etc.. I'm not just making shit up to be an apple fan boy--personally this was the first apple device I ever bought. i really do think that this display is superior.. i don't care about the specs.. the damn thing just works.

Your six year old Clie has much lower DPI and a 65k color TFT screen. What the hell is 800x480 in the same SIZE going to do for you? I don't know about you, but I don't care how crisp text is at .0000001 inches, I'm still not going to read it. I'm going to zoom in until its at a readable 9pt display size. Maybe you walk around wearing magnifying glasses, but the average joe doesn't.

From all the research I've seen, on average, a person can type the same speed on a physical mobile qwerty as they can on the iPhone. You don't own an iPhone and admittedly haven't used one for nearly the amount of time you've trained on a your physical one, so how do you even know you are faster? Part of making a comparison is giving equal regard to both sides.

only if you rode the short bus to school. I can type faster and more accurate on the iphone display. Having a solid phone with no real moving parts is a far better technological achievement then having a built in keyboard that adds to the weight and physical size of the phone.

and yes i've had both.

typing on the display in the sense that apple has done it is new school. You are thinking of old PDA's that require a magnifying glass and surgeon hands to type the correct letters on screen.

the xperia is a fucking brick, the battery life is shitty, the interface is crap, menu's were slower than i'd like, reception was eh, no flash, etc... it wasn't as great as i thought it was gonna be. even with it's shortcomings, of course i'd get one if they made it in CDMA, but alas they don't.

Don't actually use it anymore, just making a comparison. I think i confused DPI with PPI. Pixel density is based upon resolution and size whereas DPI is based upon dot pitch and indirectly related to resolution.

Although I was under the impression DPI was used for printing and PPI was used for monitors, but i guess they can overlap. From what i can tell DPI is still dots per inch, and when used with a monitor it means pixels/dots per inch. So using that logic my sony clie at 480 by 320 with a smaller physical display than an iphone would technically have a higher DPI because it has more pixels per inch than the iphone (because the iphones display is larger). Is this not correct?

If you are talking about physical display devices, PPI and DPI are interchangeable (as a dot=pixel). You can't use PPI for printing because, well, printers don't print in pixels.

How large is your Clie? Seeing as there are a dozen models out there, it's hard to say what your PPI is on that one. And just to be clear, even IF it's a higher PPI, its a 65k display, which is stupid cheap to make higher density (and was back in 03-04 as well). All the hardware specs in the world don't make a shitty phone good, take the 20,000 PMP's in Asia as a good example. Every one has better "specs" than the top tiers, but they are terrible in action and have piss-poor software.

Any trick to getting the iPhone to connect to Roadrunner's SMTP server? Can't get it to work over my local WiFi or 3g. Seems to be a lot of discussion about it on iPhone forums but no definitive answer. Works great with my work's exchange server though.

nm, i just needed to leave both username and password empty in the smtp server settings.
