I thought about upgrading but my dual 460's can handle anything I've thrown at them at 1920 by 1200. Once I upgrade the resolution I'll probably upgrade the video cards. Although getting a full time job has totally put a damper on gaming.
^why don't you wait until the real enthusiast chips (ivy bridge) come out in Q4/Q1 2012? Seems a waste to be buying any Sandy Bridge parts right now when Ivy Bridge is right around the corner. Sandy Bridge was never even considered enthusiast as the chipset was a downgrade from the previous generation in terms of ram and PCI-E bandwidth.

Think 24" - 30" - 24" would be sweet.

I don't with this desk, and I'm only about 30" away Also, keep in mind you'll have to upgrade video cards more often if you want to always play the latest games. 2560x1600 is hellish on GPUs. 8/12/2011 5:23:13 PM |

While the 580 is nice it's not quite powerful enough to max out some of the newer games at 1920 by 1200 or above. You'd be better off investing in 2 560's or 570's (or go ahead and spend the money and get 2 580's). I have 2 overclocked 460's which far surpass a single 580 and I still struggle to max out Crysis 2, Metro 2033, and a couple others at 1920 by 1200.
Again I'm being picky though. A single 580 will do fine for most games. 8/26/2011 3:36:06 PM |
Stimwalt All American 15292 Posts user info edit post |
The card I'm getting comes in third in most benchmarks, losing only to the best cards. I'm going to buy a second Twin Frozr III GTX580 OC Extreme for SLI in a few months. That will be faster than the fastest cards on the market GTX590 or HD6990, and my Mobo supports 3 in SLI, so I can get... yes, another Twin Frozr III GTX580 OC Extreme with Tri-SLI, (e.g. 3x Twin Frozr III GTX580 OC Extremes in SLI).
Since my monitor is an 38" LCD HDTV @ 120 Hertz, my resolution will remain at 1920 x 1080 anyway.
If you are interested, here is a good comparison in Metro 2033:
http://www.guru3d.com/article/msi-geforce-gtx-580-lightning-xtreme-edition-review/16
This rig is meant to be somewhat future-proof. So it will slay most if not all games for years to come, assuming I go SLI when needed. I think my card does around 40 FPS in Metro 2033 (after overclocking), which is nice already, but it will be murderous in SLI.

Ah just playing at 1080p gotcha. Hurry up and get that second one! It's not really cost effective to have only a single 580 when you can get 2 570's for the same price and for all intensive purposes be much better performance/$.
My 2 460's pretty much vsync at 60FPS most of the time in Metro 2033 and they can be had for ~$300-350 now (for both!). Just realize $600 is a bunch to spend on a card that gets beaten by a couple of much cheaper ones. To your point though if you want future proof go ahead and get the second 580.
Also why aren't you waiting until Q4 2011/Q1 2012 for Ivy Bridge to come out? They're the real enthusiast chips. If you have the money don't get Sandybridge right before they go out when Ivy Bridge is months away.
10-15 MB L3 Cache, up to quad channel DDR3. The i7 Extreme 3820 is probably going to start at ~$300 (10MB cache) while the 3930k (unlocked multiplier - 12MB cache) will be $500-600.
Just think in months people will start buying those and you'll be left behind wishing you waited another quarter.

I see your point in regards to waiting, but I'm really not willing to wait until Q1 2012, mainly because I want to be kicking ass with FPS as of September 5th. Not to mention the onslaught of great games coming out now and in Sept, Oct, and November: (Deus Ex, Dead Island, Rage, BF3, Skyrim, Doom 4, Diablo 3?).
Luckily, I'll be getting my second 580 Twin Frozr III Extreme in a month or two for SLI (considerably faster than stock 580). I'm also planning on buying a 27" 120 Hertz Input Monitor (Wall-Mounted), so my frames will actually refresh at 120 Hertz: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-MX33610%28ME%29.aspx
With all of the overclocking potential of the entire system, I'm not really worried about Ivy Bridge, although if it was available now I'd probably buy that instead. If my rig remains relevant and high-end for gaming for at least 2 years, and it will, I'm satisfied.
