This is what I mentioned in my last post. It is called the Sapporo Dome and is located in Japan. It hosted games at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Some information for those interested in the cooling system. (I know I was interested even though I was disappointed they got the WC)

The ferocious summer heat could have been a serious obstacle for Qatar’s 2022 World Cup bid, but the country turned the climate to its advantage with an innovative stadium that uses solar energy to keep players and spectators cool.
The Qatar Showcase, designed by Arup Associates of London, is a 500-seat model of the full-sized solar-cooled stadiums that will be built for 2022.
Unlike a domestic fridge, the stadium’s chilling system is driven by super-hot water. Rotating mirrors track the sun and focus its energy, heating water to 200ºC under high pressure.
“Absorption chillers” then create a strong vacuum based on lithium bromide absorbing water vapour in a closed chamber. This sets up the pressure differences required to create a cooling effect from the expansion and evaporation of vapour.
Solar heat drives vapour from the lithium bromide solution, leading to a continuous refrigeration cycle. The cold is stored in tanks below the stadium. As spectators enter, cooled air circulates down to the seating area and around the pitch. During Fifa’s visit to the model stadium, on the pitch the temperature was 23ºC. Outside it was 44ºC." |

That sounds complicated. Despite the stadiums being cool, people are going to have to endure the grueling heat for the majority of the month.
I mean, aren't the players going to have to train somewhere boiling hot, and the fans have to be out in the heat all day except the ~3 hours they happen to be in the stadium that day? 12/9/2010 11:21:13 AM |

Hope that shit doesn't break...or you're in for a miserable game experience.
How nice are the beaches there?? Because if I'm going to that World Cup, if I'm not at the game, I'm going to be in the water...although I would hope it doesn't feel like bathwater. 12/9/2010 12:05:23 PM |

I share the same concerns. Not sure how much FIFA has thought all this through. I mean it's nice that the stadiums will be somewhat comfortable but I think they're still in for a not-so-fun experience outside of that. Training definitely brings in a whole new aspect. Indoor training facilities? I dono. 12/9/2010 12:09:18 PM |

^^ Club teams would never let their respective domestic league get fucked over like that. We'll probably see quite a few players not getting released to play should that happen. 12/12/2010 2:42:32 PM |

^^There is no doubt that they took a bribe, if they are concerned about so many different things after the vote. They should have taken weather and the countries size into consideration before giving it to them. Australia would have been a much better choice, if they were looking to give it to another nation who had never hosted.
^FIFA requires clubs to release players for games that will be played on an official FIFA International match day.

I hope they try to turn it into a joint bid with Iran or something and every major country boycotts the World Cup and starts a new world federation other than FIFA so we can get away from all their bullshit.
And that just gave me an awesome idea. How cool will the World Cup be like 1000 years in the future when we can have an Earth team vs. Mars and shit like that 12/12/2010 3:34:32 PM |

I don't even care if there was bribing going on. Russia has a good team and has never hosted. Qatar however, totally sucks on the field and just took 1 of 32 spots in the 2022 World Cup that could have gone to a better team who can make it on their own. FIFA did make a comment a while back about expanding the tournament and letting more teams in. I wouldn't be shocked, if they tried something like this to avoid screwing a good team out of a World Cup spot. 12/17/2010 1:32:53 AM |

FIFA is more corrupt than any organized crime outfit.
Also, I would love it if countries boycotted the 2022 World Cup and played their seasons right through the fucking thing in January. Someone has to show those fuckers they don't own soccer.

Just coming into this thread to name-drop that I've been chilling with Charlie Davies the past few days.
He's in Charleston playing with DC United in the Carolina Challenge Cup. My roommate played for DC United a few years back and is still friends with a lot of those guys and they've been hanging around the house all weekend with Davies in tow.
My roommate thinks Davies has dropped down a level and is not too optimistic about him getting back to National Team quality.
That's all. 3/7/2011 9:19:50 AM |

I just figured that was because he was still slow coming off the injury. I don't keep up.
Also...apparently he isn't allowed to drink...at all. When he's been out, he just buys drinks for everyone else and drinks water. He get a DUI for that accident?? For some reason I don't remember him driving.3/7/2011 9:32:11 AM |

I highly doubt the USMNT plays in Charlotte. I believe Charlotte is the second match day city of Group A, with the 1st Match starting in Cowboys Stadium. I put it at a 99% chance that Mexico is in that group and plays here on June 9th.
