Now that I'm done with my practicum, the job search has begun. Here's my plan:

I have one class in the fall and then I'll have my master's in nutrition. I'm trying to find a job (part time or full time) relating to my degree, but if I don't find one within a reasonable amount of time, then I'll just work retail or something. But what is a reasonable amount of time? I'm thinking my cutoff date is when school starts (about 2.5 weeks). Is that enough?

Not nearly enough. To give you an idea, it took my husband 5 months to find his job and it took me 7 months to find mine. But we also both worked other crap jobs in the interim to make it so we weren't living in a cardboard box.

As far as what's most important in the job hunt, I'd definitely say networking is numero uno. Almost all my jobs I've gotten that way. But that said, my longest job and my current job weren't gotten by networking and had more to do with my experience and not being a social retard in the interview.

^ I worked for a company that used them to fill their tech support positions. They seemed like every other staffing agency out there to be honest.

So I've been applying to some government jobs that require a questionnaire when you apply

most of the questions go something like:

Have you ever applied X method to blah blah blah

-No I am not familiar with that method
-I recieved formal education or training on X method but have never applied it
-Yes I have performed x method but with oversight from my superiors
-Yes I have performed x method often with my former job with little oversight
-Yes I have performed x method, I am considered an expert with others consulting with me for advice

I typically reply with the 2nd or 3rd response (which is the truth) and I usually only apply to positions I think Im pretty qualified.

But so far I usually get an email saying they reviewed the questionnaire and other qualifications and I didn't rank high enough to get an interview, im guessing they only interview the top 3-5 people. (except for one of the positions which I did happen to get an interview)


my question is should I be stretching the truth on these a little more to get my foot in the door? Some of these positions could eventually lead to a "dream job"

I have a friend who was applying for an internship at a large company that requires a personality questionnaire. He responded truthfully to everything and didn't get the first call.

After the summer, he applied again, but for a full time job. He "stretched" the truth to make himself sound amazing and got called for an interview, later the job where he works very successfully to this day.

So, as long as you can back up in an interview what you say, go for it

well, looks like my luck might be turning. i feel like I've got a definite job offer from one place and still seem to be in the running for another and should hear from that one soon. Don't know how I'd choose between the two at this point. The solid one seemed to lack a great interview process, but the job seems pretty good, just a matter of if I can grow and learn new stuffs while I am there, and it seems I can. The iffy one was a much more formal interview process and I know I can learn new things there that will improve me and my marketability. It's just in fuckin TX, but at least it's Austin. grrr. well, no point in stressing about it until and unless I have offers both. We'll see. Either way, I know I'm gonna push to get into web stuff wherever i go



also, I've got to say that online applications were basically worthless for me. I've applied for well over 100 of them at big-name companies and never heard a thing back from them. Job boards, as much as they suck, seem to have been better for me. Got a lot of leads that way and at least some interview experience with them. just throwing that out there. We'll see how things go

well, didnt get the job, but did apply for it again while I was waiting for the interiew and was referred again (probably will not hear anything more). I did get some positive news on a position I have applied for twice and interviewed twice (actually three times) for. I was told by a friend that she was approached by someone that knew she knew me and told her to tell me not to give up on the position. I have already applied for a third time so that made me feel a bit better. I think they have selected like 5 people on the previous annoucements and this new one closes next week and has several openings.

I found this too. Funnily, the job I have now I sent in the stupid online application but also emailed my resume to anyone that seemed like they would have a say in the interview process. I got the interview because of that and then came to find out after they offered me the job, HR never forwarded them my online application. If I hadn't of gone on an email rampage I would have never gotten the job!

Just found out that our HR doesn't do a very good job of forwarding resumes from the online application thing, either.


We use that peoplesoft shit that everyone else uses, too. I wonder if the peoplesoft product is just bad?

Yeah im done with the online applications crap. I thought about writing my own php/sql web application that HR could actually use and selling it. I don't think they are using the people-soft system correctly or just too lazy to learn.

We have one single recruiter for all of North America for our dept. He's overloaded as hell, and when I was doing interviews we had to bug him to look through the online applications, screen them, and forward them to us so that we could actually try to hire people.

If HR departments are universally failing to use it correctly, then it's a bad product. I needs to be easy enough to use for the dumbass psychology or sociology majors who make up HR departments.

I know this isn't really the place to put this technically, but there has been some sound career advice ITT. Is it ok for a significant other to use you as a reference when applying for jobs? Normally, I would say it would be ok as long as they aren't aware that you are bf/gf, but I personally know the contact person for the job posting. She knows me as well (I'm on the fence about applying myself considering both the gf and I are in the same field), and would probably put it together easily just by looking at facebook pictures (I hide my relationship status only to family and close friends). Should I send the contact person a message through facebook letting her know my gf is applying, if it could help any way? What should I say to her?

She does, of course. But considering I know the person collecting the resumes and I assume is most likely in on the interview process (her email is listed as the contact, and she isn't in HR there), I figured it might help.

I would approach it as you contacting this person, not her listing you as a reference. Personally I'd find it odd if an applicant listed their boyfriend as one of their references rather than another professional reference.

awesome! yeah, if the reporting supervisor's title is listed in the job description then I'll do my research and find that person's name and email and then put them as the CC to the email to HR or jobs@whatever.org.

Each time I did it I got a response, either a phone interview or in person. It also worked great for this job because it went straight to my boss' blackberry and he got to read my letter and resume while on a train lol he was able to back to me very timely. Instead of it having to go through the one person who was getting hundreds of crappy emailed resumes.

I've never heard of anyone getting a job, at least at the young professional level. In my professional groups I see a lot of "looking for this type of person for a job" but they are experienced positions.

I've gotten some use out of it for networking, talking to experienced people in my field and seeing what the real world is like from their perspective. One contact was basically tempted to get me a job, but I didn't have any relevant experience. I got my job now as a result of hardcore googling to find their website and calling up the front desk for an email to send my resume, then hearing back a few months later when a position opened up.

^I've had a recruiter or two hit me up since I'm very specialized, but again that goes with the "experienced" part of what they're looking for

Mostly. I'm going to be dividing my time between the main office in Durham and working in Greenville a lot too. I'll keep on living in the triangle for a year and see how the commuting works. I'm psyched that I get to stay in NC, don't have to move (at least not immediately & I have some offers to crash or rent cheap in Greenville if need be), and I got exactly the kind of job I wanted too. Got an interview at a nice company from Linked in where their HR person contacted me directly. Also get a lot of emails from those recruiting companies, but I am not interested in that.
