Mephistopheles Stout - Amazing beer, excellent for aging.

I have a buddy going to St. Paul today for work.
Was going to see if he would bring me back some Surly. Prospero, are you familiar with them or what I should try to get brought back home? 4/3/2012 8:33:50 AM |

Surly, heck yea, Abrasive & Furious, Bender/Coffee Bender if they got it.
Bummer he can't bring any back, but never fear it's really easy to trade for and/or buy online.

Next time he goes to MSP and checks bags, have him bring back some Town Hall, wicked good brewery as well

That's funny I did a tasting last year for my birthday and it didn't do that great with my 12 friends, they rated it lowest..... right next to Pliny the Elder and Espresso Yeti, so take it with a grain of salt, lol.

anyway, I like what I like and I'm always looking for different beers to try. If I went by ratings there are a lot of great beers, IMO, that I would have missed out on. 4/4/2012 11:44:56 PM |

4th was just the order of the tasting, the rankings are below the picture.
I'm not saying not to try it. I bought it to try it as well don't forget that. I was just recalling my tasting of it that's all.

Such good news! Fat Tire's a great gateway beer and Abbey, La Folie, and Le Terroir are such great beers. I'm a big fan of Belgo IPA and how can anyone forget 1554, such a classic. Not to mention New Belgium just has an awesome beer philosophy, sustainable, grassroots, cycling, etc. 4/6/2012 12:00:44 PM |

Had the Bruery White Oak, pretty amazing wheat wine. Nice wheat body to it but had a crisp fruit finish with a tad of oak which made it much more complex than a normal wheat wine. Definitely one of their best. No real hints of bourbon but kind of expected that since it's blended and it's a wheat wine, you just need a little. To me it was a good balance.

Last night got together with some fellas and played Settlers of Catan and did a beer tasting, pretty decent line-up, we also had a 1/2 gallon growler of Great Divide's Denver Pale Ale (not pictured) we had multiple of hoptimum, deviant and two hearted. I also had some Espresso Yeti and a rare Breckenridge barrel-aged ESB but we didn't get that far.
Birthday Beer Tasting #1
I'd say Cold Mountain was the most unique, pretty sweet, but clean and refreshing for a winter ale. Deviant Dale's was by far the best IPA, then Two-Hearted. Hoptimum was really bitter and not that well balanced IMHO, but I think that's characteristic of a NWPA which is what I'd classify it as. (I know it's an IIPA, but still dominated by pine). Beer Geek Breakfast was the best stout by a land slide. I liked Dragon's Milk but was a bit too sweet to be mixed with barrel-aging but good in it's own right. It was a little tricky tasting all of these beers because they are so random, but I'm keeping my awesome beers for Round #2 on April 20th

^ Don't forget Holy City. It's the most recent brewery...and they've put out some great stouts and porters this year. Just tried a Smoked Marzen they released that was pretty good as well. Head down to the Charleston Beer Exchange on Exchange street and you can get a lot of their offerings in three different sized growlers. 4/16/2012 11:00:09 AM |
