haha yea. it cracks me up big time still. I thought of it because I read:

Quote :
"
just our luck"

and was thinking about how at least we don't have agoos as an own-goal scoring threat these days. i then had to go and find that video

and, i know i've said it before in here and i'll say it again: that 2002 world cup is one of my best memories as a soccer fan. I got goosebumps watching our first goal against Portugal again and then thinking about how much we outplayed Germany in the quarters

I say we put in Torres and Buddle for Clark and Findley to start. They are a defensive-minded team, and their attack does not scare me too much. We could use some additional creativity and finishing prowess against the Slovenia D. We should play to score and then play to score more, considering group seeding could come down to goal differential if we can beat Slovenia.

yeah, Slovenia's compact defense will take away the effectiveness of Findley's speed. I, too, think Buddle should get the start.

yeah same here. i probably wasn't alone in thinking, "we're here. we're a legit soccer power now." obviously, i jumped the gun, but it was exciting nonetheless

it's crazy to think that even after a great result against england, a lapse in play can still hold us back.

i would love for this to be the first world cup where we advance out of the group stage outright, without relying on any tiebreakers.

It doesn't really matter if the US makes it out of group stage because they're going to lose anyway

the teams that have impressed me the most so far are Germany and South Korea. Brasil is Brasil and they are impressive but they looked like they just found the sweet spot, otherwise they looked pretty pedestrian against DPRK. Germany and SK dominated their opponents, SK could have easily had 4 goals

^I was hoping, as much as I hate DPRK (as a country), that they would've won over Brasil.

I was really impressed by the way the Ivory Coast held Portugal to a tie, and the way the Netherlands
kept attacking once they were up on Denmark. Im surprised that Italy didnt blow there first opponent away in the first match.

South Korea has a good shot at the quarterfinals too, since they'll get one of the shaky-looking group A teams if they advance

^^Italy is overrated. They have no offensive creativity. You're not going to see them blow out anybody this year.

My predictions for today:
Honduras 2 vs Chile 1
Switzerland 0 vs Spain 3
South Africa 1 vs Uruguay 1

they are probably wrong as hell...

Chile is my darkhorse to go very far in the tourney. If Honduras is good, Chile is really good. I dont think I've seen Honduras mount any kind of offensive effort since I started watching at after halftime

let's not get too carried away... Honduras did barely qualify from Concacaf, they're not a world power or anything

I've really enjoyed watching Chile play today. I think I'm going to pull for them the rest of this group. Also, that country has always sort of fascinated me -- I don't know why.

chile looked good today. buuut, it was honduras. we'll see what they're made of when they face spain.

i'm expecting many goals from villa/torres today, and spain should put on a clinic.

it fascinates me b/c it has the weirdest shape of almost any country. Almost 3,000 miles long (half the continent of South America) but only around 200 miles wide.

It has to be frustrating as a defender playing Spain since they possess the ball the entire match it feels like.

Are you allowed to run at a free kick like that (Spanish player that approached toward the ball)

It was indirect so they put a touch on it first and at that time you can bolt...

And that is INCREDIBLE that Spain has never been past the quarterfinals. Wow...

iniesta deserves a yellow for that one. not for diving, but for not making something out of that beautiful opportunity

that was a stupid play by iniesta. why dive when you are free on goal like that. that's the second dive for him today, he better cut it out.
