No. I'd say the show has tried to explain this better than the books have. LudaChris's explanation sums it up best.

^Yeah, and I assume the grave digging guy from Season 1 was Jim who was bitten on his arm when the zombies attacked the camp outside of Atlanta. I don't recall ever seeing any zombie show, movie, or book where a bite didn't cause you to turn. I can't recall anywhere else where they quickly thought to try to amputate the area where someone received a bite to try to save the person. I guess we'll have to see how it goes with Hershel.

"I wonder HOW everyone initially got infected. Maybe making contact at one point, and getting zombie blood into their system. I suppose the infected zombie blood will still spread in your system, but doesn't actually turn you until you die. So what about someone who never had any type of contact with a zombie or any on infected, would they remain unturned when they die? I think so.

I suppose this explains how brashly they go into combat in the show, not giving a shit about zombie blood splatter. Maybe this means Hershel is perfectly fine after getting his bitten leg cut off, unless the blood loss kills him. The wound would not have had time to become infested with any bacteria from the bite, and spread disease into Hershal, killing him that way. As long as they carterize the would, and prevent any infection from an open and untreated wound, Hershel is going to live. So basically, if you get a scratch or a bite, you are okay, as long as you treat it and prevent a bacterial infection or significant blood loss. Got it. With that said, it is still gross that Glenn kisses Maggie's blood covered back. Eww."

I think that based on the implication that EVERYONE is infected, there must've been some sort of airborne pathogen that everyone has been exposed to.

Now that that is solved, lets go back to the prospect of Lori's love child baby literally tearing her a new one. Is there a doctor in the house wolfweb? What kind of damage could an unborn zombie baby do inside of a body? There is no teeth to bite, minimal muscle structure to pull/tug/push/grab. Are finger nails developed enough to scratch, causing internal bleeding? Can an unborn zombie baby start to rot or accumulate bacteria? The most I can fathom is the baby starting to squirm a lot, causing a lot of discomfort for Lori.

On the other side, if Lori turns, would she tear into her own body to eat the baby? That would be a wild scene to see. I would rather see Lori turn, and everyone try to rescue the baby out of her, then the baby turn, and everyone try to rescue Lori. I really don't see the show just letting her have the baby in peace with no complications. Something is going to go down.

Death = zombie
Wound + death = zombie
Wound from zombie bite/scratch = accelerated infection + death
zombie blood/saliva in mouth = bad breath

This hasn't been explained. I hope it never does. I like it better that way.

Remember there was also that one zombie that climbed the chain link fence going after Glenn and Rick after they had covered themselves in zombie guts in the first season. I'm thinking maybe that the zombie infection can mutate and maybe 1 out of every 5000 is "smart".

Yea, there were three early instances where zombies used fine motor skills
Picking up and throwing a rock
Climbing a chain linked fence
Turning a door knob - I seriously almost quit this series when I saw this in s1e1

There haven't been an other cases since these three back in season one. I don't think there was any virus mutation, just dipshit writing in those scenes

I was interested in the blood thing too when this season was getting hyped.

I seem to remember one of the first episodes Rick or someone says something to the matter of "dont get it on you, you'll get infected"

anyone know that reference?

Yeah, it's when they figured out that the Dead could smell living humans. So they find a dead body and hack it to pieces and cover themselves in the guts. They cover their face and hands when they're hacking. Was the dead body a zombie who'd been shot in the head? Or was it early in the outbreak, and not all humans were infected yet?

^ yea exactly. they covered their faces and hands when hacking the body up. walking around among the zombies there faces weren't covered so i guess the zombies couldn't smell the "alive" part over the bulk of the "dead" part.

Bingo. Like a non-magical virus that somehow infected everyone on the planet simultaneously but doesn't kill you except when you get bit by a zombie.

Primarily to laugh at the spoiler/no spoilers schism, but as much as I don't like this show it is essentially the only zombie horror (a genre I really do like) show in town. Is this the circle-jerk-over-how-awesome-this-show-is thread?

I too, have been a fan of the zombie horror genre for a long time. So, which zombie movies do you find more believable and think contain less plot holes than this series? I'm curious, I think I've seen a lot, but I find this series more believable than most.

A world-wide outbreak of a bite induced zombie outbreak has always bothered me. I feel it would be isolated to a relatively small geographic region. obviously it would spread initially before people were aware what was happening, but eventually there would be a quarantine etc. The idea that there is an airborne (presumably) virus that reanimates corpses is more believable in terms of world-wide spread to me. Bites still 'spread' the virus, but only because they speed up the death process.

the fence climbing zombie still pisses me off, at least it was an athletic looking black man, so its more believable.

Oh so it's ok to be racist, but it's not ok to talk about the comic book?

How is this thread any different than the Game of Thrones thread? They specifically made a different thread for people to talk about the tv show in the context of the books.

Other than the CDC guy, none of the characters would be able to know how this "virus" works.

You can't really take anything any character says as gospel.

To my knowledge, the show has never shown anyone turn just by coming into contact with zombie guts/blood, this was made clear in the episode where the guy cut his hand on the knife after stabbing zombies.

We don't know how the zombies work, except people who die will turn, and people who have been bitten have turned. To my recollection, the show has been pretty consistent in this.

I thought this pretty much nailed it from what I've gathered, minus one small change

Quote :
"Death = zombie
Wound + death = zombie
Wound from zombie bite/scratch = accelerated infection + death
zombie blood/saliva in mouth = bad breath --- Right, because you're already infected. Once you have the chicken pox virus, you have it. You won't "get it again" by being in contact with someone showing symptoms."

They are all infected already. The virus just doesn't "express" itself until you've died. Getting bit by a zombie may cause you to turn, but only because it causes you to die and you happen to be infected.

It could be that everyone carries a benign version of the virus that activates upon death into its zombie form. A bite introduces the final zombie virus in a very high concentration that takes over the body and causes death.

That or the body can fend off the virus naturally but the bite has a very high concentration...dunno.

Either way, not sure how it goes down when Glenn licks Maggie clean of zombie blood and gore.

One thing I've never understood about zombie canon is muscle rot. I'm sure it has been explained at some point in this thread, but I just don't know. If it is something supernatural bringing the dead back to life, sure. But if its a virus, then tissue still deteriorates.

So, what did we learn today folks:

1) Rick is willing to kill living people for the safty of his own group.
2) Carl continues to be a rogue, but at least he's useful. oh, and he hates his mom
3) Hershel is alive... for now
4) Lori performed her most useful act in 3 season by saving Hershel
5) Carol is educating herself as a second medic
6) Big Tiny died
