I sure am glad that the NCAA has determined that our admissions process was correct and he is OK to attend class. meanwhile, Julius Peppers can barely spell his name and only maintains eligiblility by taking courses we know were fake, and the NCAA doesn't give a rat's ass about it.

^^ That's right. Because the NCAA didn't give the entire UNC athletics department the death penalty the day JP's transcript surfaced they don't care one single bit.

^^^No, they didn't give them the death penalty.

They also didn't lift a finger to look into the additional possibilities of longer and more systemic academic fraud. In fact, they made an official statement that the classes were UNCs problem and not an NCAA issue.

^^^Nice article.

Quote :
"McNair, 38, and Purvis were wary of the stories about top-level athletes who either never qualified for college or failed to maintain eligibility once admitted. Or even worse, those who just got by.

"That's something I never wanted to happen to me," Purvis said."

Poor guy. Seems like a great kid who made a conscious, deliberate effort to do everything well, not just "good enough." I hate to see such behavior met with doubt and criticism by the NCAA. Whether it's justified or not, it creates a "no good deed goes unpunished" attitude.

I just don't know why they couldn't have started investigating the high school, if it's just procedure on every new high school class, when he was still a highly lauded recruit. Why wait until now?

so I dont know how true this is (or if its been mentioned before) but Adam Gold commented yesterday that on grades K-9 at Upper Room are accredited, the remaining classes wont be accredited until 2015. So that explains that part of the story

I believe it's because they are brand new and accreditation takes a couple of years to achieve. Not because they failed the accreditation.

^^that's the what I read last week. It takes years/graduating classes to earn accreditation, so it's no sign of wrong/bad-doing by the high school, it's just new.

Some genius UNC fan pointed out that there were no URCA classes listed as approved on the NCAA's website as some proof that Purvis/URCA are trying to cheat/game the system, etc... well, you can't have classes approved by the NCAA until the NCAA reviews them, which they don't do until there's an athlete needing to be cleared, which doesn't start until after they've graduated high school, which then must wait its turn in the thousands of eligibility reviews each year, and the 50 or so "extended reviews" each year for new schools.

since he is going to class now, is there any kind of loophole where we rescind his scholarship, he's allowed to play as a walk-on, then we offer him a full scholarship for next year and beyond?

Can he and his family afford that. are you asking him to take out student loans?

You very rarely hear of kids in rich and famous family paying for college if they get a scholarship. i think worst case now is he redshirts this year, or misses a few games, and finally best case he's cleared to play.

i dunno his financial situation, i was just asking if there is some loophole where he would be eligible to play basketball for us this year if he wasn't on scholarship, since it seems this whole accreditation thing only applies to students who have received scholarships

i just dont understand how if they were reviewing his curriculum...and now he is cleared to go to class. which is basically them saying that his curriculum was acceptable. how did this somehow become a basketball issue?

i never thought that there would be clearance for one without the other. the ncaa has said nothing to insinuate that this was about anything other that the hs being accredited

State's admissions department has more credibility than the NCAA IMO w/ the track record of the NCAA lately.

Dezmine Wells kicked out of Xavier for a "sexual incident".

Really hope we go after this guy; it probably wasn't much of anything since Xavier is a Catholic school.

it's definitely not a good sign. but it doesn't necessarily spell disaster for the purvis situation, either. i'm sure the players at upper room would like to avoid the headache that purvis is going through right now.

Yeah this doesn't necessarily mean anything for purvis and it is a good sign he's allowed in class. Even if the school has issues its possible for purvis to get a waiver on his own merits but all in all its not a good look or a good sign in the long run.

^that's right...i wasn't thinking of that (although that would likely be a mistake for him).

and simonn, if you're talking about my post, how is what i said (aside from him going pro as ^ suggested) "full out making shit up"? him being allowed to attend classes means that he is not a non-qualifier and won't have to go to juco. so he may have to sit out a semester or an entire year...he's just waiting to be fully cleared.

someone please correct me if i'm wrong. that's my understanding of the situation.

sure, i suppose purvis could drop out and go overseas for a year before going pro. or he could go pro after sitting out all of this season. maybe i should have said "if purvis plays college ball, it will be for state.

its a little ass backword if purvis cant play after he has already graduated from upper room and they dont get approved. what is he supposed to do then? he should be grandfathered into play and anyone else after his graduating class cant. kinda like you cant get prosecuted for something that become illegal after you do it.
