Thanks for yesterday's "news" recap.

I'm only aware of one. A big and PG backup possibly.

Freeman redshirting would be good. Really good, especially if we bring in the 7 foot transfer.

2 grad transfers with immediate PT(only one is a serviceable replacement) and 2 players that will have to sit a year.

No idea when the Turkish guy comes to the US to visit either.

^^^^yeah i think a potentially ideal (or as close to ideal as possible) situation in our frontcourt would be bringing in the Turkish 7 footer and redshirting Freeman if his leg is still an issue. That would help in '17 when we have to replace the rest of our frontcourt. bringing in a regular transfer that has to sit a year or signing a late recruit that might be a bit of late bloomer and not command lots of PT in '16 would definitely help the frontcourt in '17.

Glad to hear there are rumors of some transfers. This is our new march madness. I guess it is bad that we are crossing our fingers we can field a team instead of crossing our fingers we win some games in the tournament. All our hope is in you Dennis Smith Jr. , no pressure.

We have a great track record of performing well with Turkish recruits. Some may even say Bulgarian recruits. We should just change our mascot to the AK-47.

he's a regular transfer and would have to sit out '16-17. averaged 23 ppg this past season.

Quote :

Broome made 53.5% of his twos this year--pretty impressive for a short guy--and shot 31.1% from three. That production came with a massive workload--he took nearly a third of the Sacred Heart's shots while he was on the floor. At a high-major program, where he would almost certainly carry a lighter load, it's a fair bet his outside shooting will improve."

Dear god its come to this.

In the old days we'd be hoping our scrubs transferred to become NEC POY to free up a scholarship.

Now we are just hoping to land the NEC POY.

I mean the guy has to sit out a year. This is no way to build a team

When i came to school we were losing studs like Mike bell who couldn't get minutes. Now we are HOPING TO ADD TRANSFERS WHO HAVE TO SIT OUT A YEAR who could have barely walked on back then. Seriously, will roach was a bigger recruit than this guy

That's fine. If DSJ does go after only one year we'll need a PG, and one with a couple years experience is obviously better. I'm sure he'd be more of a safety net than anything.

So much hate for Mav.. He was a young freshman who played a ton of minutes and averaged 13 points per game. Give the guy a year to get up to speed before bashing the shit out of him like he's some scrub. He's one of the better performing freshmen we've had.

I'm sick of people throwing around the "young freshman" phrase when describing Rowan. Dude is older than Abu for fucks sake

what about the "freshman" phrase, which is 100% accurate?

dude isn't an athlete like Abu and was never expected to play as many minutes as he did. tk is right. ask yourself this, did Rowan exceed, meet, or not live up to your expectations for him?

I'd say he didn't live up to them. 4* freshmen you get at the last minute forced into a starting position due to injury should average 15+ ppg

I think the biggest factor in this "freshmen" excuse is that he got to school right before classes started. Most incoming freshmen get on campus during the summer and start taking classes, working out with college level S&C conditioning coaches, practicing and hanging out with teammates. Rowan spent all summer taking classes so he could qualify to enter college and got here right before school started and had to hit the ground running.

If there was anyone on this team that could have used a couple of months of high level S&C, it was Rowan. That dude hit the wall hard in the middle of ACC play. He did rebound a bit towards the end, but that kid needs to shape up big time over the offseason.

Add that to the fact that he was completely overused...and I think his play is perfectly explained. He should have been a 15-20 minute spark off the bench. Someone to come in and bust up a zone and be the 3rd or 4th option on a decent team. Instead he was the 2nd and sometimes first option on a thin team...playing almost 34 minutes a game. He averaged more minutes than Brice Johnson (28) and Marcus Paige (31).

Not too many freshmen have to put in that many minutes. And ones that do are the top 10 guys who are expecting and come in early and prepare for it.

I thought Mav did well walking into minutes he wasn't intended to play. Just wait next year he will be everyone's favorite player besides DSJ of course. Kids a shooter.

Also think part of the problem is that when Rowan was suppose to be in the 2016 class he was a 5* player, but then when he switched to 2015 he slid down to a 4* player.

I think some people just wanted to see "5* player" and not consider the age advantage he had.

He'll get better, but I'm not convinced Rowan doesn't come off the bench next year.

Offensively, Rowan was ok for a freshman forced into a bigger role than he was ready for. He wasn't particularly good, but a lot of guys - especially shooters - aren't as freshmen and still end up having great college careers and I think he showed enough potential that he could develop into a guy like that. Yeah, you could argue that due to his age he may not improve on the same incline as most guys but he'll also be at least a 23 year old adult playing mostly against kids when that time comes.

Defensively he was a disaster. All in it adds up to "meh" and the promise he has as an upperclassman is somewhat lessened by the fact that Gottfried loses players like crazy and he'll probably leave for Europe as a Junior if he doesnt transfer next season

Coming back to the Martins - they cited poor fit in our offensive scheme as a reason for transferring. This isn't accurate, at least in the sense that they're both a poor fit for any half court offensive scheme. The actual problem with their place in our program is our defense. Our defensive scheme is basically a really awful man-to-man half court where we give up shots early in the shot clock with the idea that we'll force our opponents into a non-ideal shot by giving them space and then relying on our above average athleticism to close that gap and make it a tougher shot than it seems. As we've seen, that doesn't actually work very well and there aren't many players well suited for it.

In theory, the Martins aren't any worse suited to play like that than anyone else on our roster but the issue is that they're well suited for a chaotic defense with lots of pressing that collapses the structure of games. This is where the offense comes in - they're just not especially talented half court players but they thrive in full court situations, Caleb jacking up 3s, Cody jumping into lanes and just being a pest, etc a la those Shaka VCU teams. And we play about as far away from that type of scheme as you can get.

I think everyone understands what our offense is supposed to be. The problem is that it relies on a technically skilled big man to execute either with good passing to cutters or a good tradiitonal back to the basket game. I don't know that we have had that big man since Gott has been here.

In practice, our office is alot of motion and cuts near the top of the key before it breaks down and one of our stars creates something. Players who might thrive with their athleticism being able to drive to the hole and kick it to shooters end up frustrated--hence purvis and the twins leaving because they didn't fit the offense.

And the twins didn't leave because they didn't "fit" into the offense. They left because the additions of Dorn and Henderson to the lineup was going to eat into their playing time as juniors and seniors and they obviously weren't confident enough in their ability or wanted to put in the necessary work to fight and keep that playing time.

We aren't UNC or Duke where those types of players will stick around because they have a great shot at winning a natty or know they'll get mass exposure.

I'm not saying they're bad kids, but it's disappointing that they thought they should be guaranteed playing to,e. And maybe Gott shouldn't have recruited Dorn or Mav...but we need depth and better players just in case the current ones don't pan out.

I just wish at least one of them would have stayed...but I guess they would have missed those twin jerk-off sessions too much.

^^Add Warren and wood to that list as well.

^ I'm sure playing time contributed. I do think there is something to slash and kick guys not finding a groove in our offense because it's so structured.

yeah the "offensive scheme" quote was just PR bs but I wanted to use it to make a point about their play style and what was kind of a recruiting issue in how we went after them even though they werent great fits

yeah, Abu is better than Rowan but he's really not a great player. The people who think he'd get drafted if he stayed in are insane. Brice Johnson is a back end 1st rounder/early 2nd. You think Abu is getting drafted in that world?

As a JR he could be a pretty solid ACC big but I would also expect Rowan to be pretty good as a JR provided we can keep him around that long

our offense wasnt good this year. the #s added up at the end of the season because we forfeited playing defense even more than normal by crashing the boards for offensive rebounds

in past years Gott has managed to lean on our strengths enough to be a pretty good offense (although it's worth nothing there's a difference between a pretty good and a GREAT offense - see us vs ND) but this year he just didn't have the pieces. Cat wasn't Warren/Lacey good, he could just shoulder a lot of volume and minutes
