Imagine a late December game against Atlanta next season, with a playoff spot on the line. Carolina is down 24-20 with 2 minutes left and the ball on their own 20 yard line. Chudinski calls for a play to Smitty cutting over the middle, with Olsen setting a pick on Smith's man, and serving as the second read if Smith isn't able to get free. At the line, Newton sees the deep safety cheating up toward the line, right into the spot where Smith's route would lead him. Cam subtly nods his head at the receiver on the other side of the line, changing his simple curl route into a deep go. At the snap, the safety predictably comes charging in, only to be picked up by Stewart, who cuts off his route into the flat to buy Cam another second. Smith is double teams, and Olsen can't get any separation from his man either. In 2011, this ends in a sack. But in 2012, Cam patiently waits on that other receiver to get 30, 40, even 50 yards down field before he rears back and uncorks a perfect spiral nearly 70 yards in the air. And on the other side of that pass, almost making it look too easy, Randy Gene Moss effortlessly catches the ball in stride on the 15 and waltzes into the endzone, sending the fans into a frenzy.
