i'm sure the NCAA will take an in depth look...but if he hasn't touched the money, then i don't see why he wouldn't be #clears. just depends how quickly the NCAA moves on it. hopefully him committing now will get the ball rolling on it. 5/16/2016 12:46:57 PM |

He seems to be doing the right things in terms of committing early enough to get an LOI in. Hopefully the staff follows up and makes sure he gets all the garbage the NCAA needs to see in before the year starts - it's a lot of stupid details but the staff is usually pretty good about that stuff.

Even if he is cleared, it is unbelievably rare for a 17 year old 7 footer to dominate at the college level. Although this is a huge get for Gott, I'd like to see him keep Abu and add another PG/wing before I'm optimistic about next season. 5/16/2016 1:48:14 PM |

So, does anybody know what kind of game this guy has. Like can he shoot, or is he more of a back to the basket post up center? Our biggest need right now is a big who can play the high post, make a 17 foot jump shot, and pass it to the low post. Hopefully either this guy can do it, or Malik is taking 1000 jump shots/day this summer.

Looks to have a softer shooting touch than any of the bigs on our team now although that's not saying much in and of itself.
Favorite part of the vid is "struggles to keep the ball in front in PnR". Yep, he will fit right in here.

Think the optimism he is cleared stems from:
1. He never signed a contract. 2. He never took the money from the fund the team started for him without his permission. 3. His family never took the money from the fund.
If those 3 things are true, he'll be cleared. So far he's swearing that those 3 are true, and if so, not sure how the NCAA doesn't let him play. Not his fault the team is trying to do shady shit to screw him over and keep him there. 5/16/2016 2:23:46 PM |

From one of many articles about his recruitment:
Quote : | "he’s very gifted, as he’s equipped with terrific hands and quality touch around the basket. Yurtseven can score with hooks over each shoulder and is also a good shooter from mid-range out to the three-point stripe. He’ll help N.C. State immediately with his scoring ability and rebounding." |

I'd like to see us add more guys just from a depth/developmental perspective, but I'd think another true frontcourt player would be more important. Assuming Nard redshirts, Omer, Abu & (obviously) Anya are all likely gone by this time next year and we'd be left with a redshirt senior Freeman and a sophomore Hicks. Would be ideal to have a little more experience there, especially considering we don't really know what Freeman will be like if/when he returns.
I think the plan right now is for Dorn/Henderson to spell DSJ at the point and Dorn/Henderson/Rowan/Kirk to rotate at the wing spots (with Hicks also having the ability to play some wing) so I'm less concerned about those spots, although if we could find another guy who doesn't mind backing up DSJ, I wouldn't hate it.5/16/2016 3:13:51 PM |

^adding a transfer to the frontcourt who'd sit this year (but have experience, as opposed to a true freshman) would probably be the best thing looking toward 2017 5/16/2016 3:19:25 PM |

Yeah, I'd take a current HS senior too, but I doubt there's really anyone left out there that's worth a damn unless there's someone that has become eligible super late or a late decommit who still hasn't decided. Supposedly Gibson Johnson is still visiting and some on PP are acting like we wouldn't/shouldn't take him so we have room to recruit high-caliber 2017 bigs, but I'd really like to get him. He's a 6'8" JUCO kid who seems to shoot well, would be eligible immediately to play the next two seasons and give us insurance against Yurtseven clearinghouse issues. Also can't imagine a hypothetical returning crop of him, Hicks, and Freeman scaring off a lot of top tier recruits in the 2017 class. 5/16/2016 3:39:32 PM |
jocristian All American 7527 Posts user info edit post |
I haven't heard that Freeman is redshirting. If Abu comes back, 5 guys (Omer, Hicks, Freeman, Abu, Anya) is already a lot for two spots. If we can get a good transfer that will sit out this year, then that's great but I'd say a PG or a wing is much more important for next season. 5/16/2016 3:50:34 PM |
spencer All American 3640 Posts user info edit post |
I don't think it's been announced that Freeman is redshirting, but it sounds like a definite possibility, especially given our recruiting.
Assuming he doesn't, we would have 4-5 guys (Henderson, Rowan, Dorn, Kirk, Hicks) for the two wing spots and 4-5 (Anya, Freeman, Abu,, Yurtseven, Hicks) for the two frontcourt spots. I'd definitely rather have an extra guy in the frontcourt than at the wing at this point given the uncertainty around Abu (draft/transfer), Freeman (return from injury), Anya (draftlol/conditioning), AND Yurtseven (eligibility) along with the part where those guys tend to be in more foul trouble, but maybe that's just me.
Definitely wouldn't mind having more bodies around, though, and PP has some rumors that we might take this Spencer Newman kid from Mobile, Alabama as either a walk-on or after offering a late scholarship. Two star combo guard (although sounds more like a SG) who is supposedly a sharpshooter. 5/16/2016 4:01:19 PM |

If Freeman doesn't redshirt, we might lose 6 players next off season, plus a random transfer that tends to happen. I guess we can just become a Kentucky/Duke and reload with one and dones.. 5/16/2016 5:04:23 PM |

Turkish dude isn't one and done. Watch his tape. He's a finesse guy. He won't do much as a freshman.
Dude is 6'11 1/2" with a 7' 0.75" wingspan. That's nothing spectacular.

TreeTwista10 minisoldr 148457 Posts user info edit post |
He's OAD based on them watching him play against 17 year olds in Turkey, not ACC upperclassmen, which they'll get to see next year.
He's not like Dwight Howard coming out of high school or something. He's more like one of those guys you've never heard of who gets drafted in the 1st round and sucks his rookie season in the NBA.
He could be really, really good. But just cause he's got a certain number of stars doesn't mean he's gonna play like Brice Johnson did last year if that's what anyone is expecting.
And I'm pretty pumped that he chose us. Just trying to temper expectations a bit.
