Quote : | "Wolfpack returnees keep working posted: Monday, May 1, 2006 | Feedback
Fear not for the remaining NC State players.
They are going to class. They are lifting weights. They are working out.
Strength coach Charles Stephenson is handling the brunt of the workouts for these wayward players who have a school but no coaching staff to call their own.
Managers are still around to shag rebounds and former Wolfpack players Jordan Collins, Tony Bethel, Cameron Bennerman and Ilian Evtimov are around to work out with the returnees. There technically are 11 players on the roster who could return next season, although Cedric Simmons declared for the NBA draft and isn't likely to return. Andrew Brackman is playing baseball, but so far there hasn't been any official word that he won't return next season. The university is in the midst of exam time so it won't be long before everyone splits.
As for that coaching search thing, have you ever seen more coaches make public statements about not being involved in a job? The latest was Notre Dame's Mike Brey on Sunday. As of Saturday night, Xavier's Sean Miller hadn't been contacted. So, who knows, maybe he'll issue a statement soon saying he's not a candidate, either.
The list of coaches who aren't candidates continues to grow." |

^^Whittenberg is not an option.
It's looking like Lowe or Miller right now unless something comes out of the blue. I think we're waiting to see if Lowe can assemble a respectable staff, and if he can't, then it's Sean Miller (Lowe gets his degree from State in June...which is a requirement for us). Ford is our backup...seriously.

is it really a good idea to hire a coach that has never recruited a single player in his life, let alone never coached a single college game? that doesn't seem to make much sense. they should've gone after a strong mid major right off the bat instead of asking every coach with a "name." I can't remember a team in any sport having this many people turn them down for a head coaching position. looks like the herb supporters really did know what they were talking about 5/2/2006 8:47:24 AM |

Many of you worry too much about winning percentage...
I mean Gregg Marshall has been beating up on Radford, UNCA, Coastal Carolina, etc.
Sidney Lowe was coaching against the Lakers, Suns, Mavericks, Spurs, etc.
Plus Lowe is one of our own. He would UNITE the WHOLE fanbase or at least he should. 5/2/2006 9:57:41 AM |

Quote : | " Lowe has eyes for Pack Former State star interested in returning Chip Alexander, Staff Writer
Sidney Lowe, who helped N.C. State win a national championship as a player in 1983, says he would like to have a chance to do the same as the Wolfpack coach. "Yeah, one day," he said Monday. "I'd definitely have interest in it one day. It's something I would hope would happen. It is my alma mater."
Lowe, 46, is an assistant coach for the Detroit Pistons, who are seeking a second NBA title in three years. But with the Pack now a month into its search for a coach to replace Herb Sendek, Lowe's name is being mentioned as a solid candidate for the job.
"My mind-set is totally on the Detroit Pistons and winning another championship," Lowe said. "That's the only thing I'm concerned with at this time."
Lowe, who owns a house in Raleigh, acknowledged that he has talked with NCSU athletics director Lee Fowler but said it was only a "general discussion" about other candidates such as Memphis coach John Calipari, who has coached in the NBA.
To hold a job such as head coach at NCSU requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year institution. Lowe did not graduate from NCSU but said he was finishing up his degree work this month "at a very credible university." He declined to give additional details on his academic work at this time.
Lowe played four seasons for NBA teams including the Charlotte Hornets and was a head coach at Minnesota and then Memphis. With both teams in rebuilding stages, Lowe went 33-102 with the Timberwolves and then 46-126 with the Grizzlies. He resigned at Memphis after the team's 0-8 start in the 2002-2003 season.
Lowe has not coached in college but said the transition from the NBA -- for any pro coach -- would not be difficult. NBA teams, he said, have a good handle on the best high school players.
"We have as many contacts with AAU coaches and high school coaches as they do on the collegiate level," he said.
Fowler, in an interview Monday, said he would not address specific candidates but said he still was concentrating on those with head coaching experience.
"We're still in that mode," he said. "I have not looked at anyone without head coaching experience. We have not looked at any who have only been assistants."
Fowler added, "I guess that means Phil Ford."
Ford, who played and then was an assistant coach at North Carolina and now is an assistant with the New York Knicks, spoke with NCSU officials last week about the State job.
Ford has said he would be "flattered" to be mentioned for the position that has been vacant since Sendek left to take over as coach at Arizona State.
Ford could not be reached Monday for comment.
Fowler insisted the length of the search for a new coach would not hinder the Pack's recruiting efforts this year. He said candidates for the State job were recruiting and analyzing high school talent at various events in April.
"The people we've talked to have been out there," he said.
Fowler is making his first major hire since becoming the school's athletics director in September 2000. He said the process has been more tedious than expected because of the extended negotiations with candidates and their representatives.
"We've talked contracts with a couple of guys," he said without naming names. "But you get to the point where you think you're about to hire, then they tell you to talk to their agent. Then the agent has a lawyer. Coaches are layered with agents, lawyers and accountants who all want something else in the contract.
"Some [candidates] don't mention a buyout until you start to get serious. They don't mention [potential problems] on the front end."
Asked if a buyout had stalled discussions with a coach during the search, Fowler said, "I think it has been well-chronicled."
Last week, NCSU appeared close to reaching an agreement with West Virginia coach John Beilein, but Beilein's buyout provision of nearly $3 million proved to be a stumbling block. " |

The idea of Sidney Lowe coaching here makes me sigh.
I'm just not a fan of hiring ANYONE that has never been a head coach in college before. That is what mid-majors do, last time I checked, we aren't a mid-major.
I'll support whomever, as I supported Herb simply because he was the coach here, and I love my university. But this could be a potentially awful hire.
I would take Whitt or Miller over Lowe if it was my choice, simply because they have more experience.
Just because you were an NBA coach, a crappy one at that, doesn't mean you can recruit NBA talent.
sigh. 5/2/2006 11:40:55 AM |
