4x^ lol yeah because that's what soccer refs do after fights is just show a yellow card.
Man that T symbol the refs do in basketball is so much more powerfull than "a yellow piece of paper". What an idiot

Reilly is right. A little weighted yellow flag thrown at a player is much more TUFF.

he's right in that soccer refs tend to make a show out of the whole thing, as if tripping a guy is somehow a personal affront to the ref

i love the mascot, in this one.

happens in every sport. what else are they supposed to do? calmly go up to the offending player, and politely ask them to leave? refs have a protocol to follow, in all sports.

I would LOVE to see Bobbys reaction if an ump walked up to him during a rant and threw a yellow card in his face.

But, wait, TWO of those silly little cards have the ability to kick a player out and suspend him for the next game. So doesn't that mean they actually do have some power? At least as much as any other foul notification used in sports...

A yellow card is like five fouls in the NBA. One more of them and you're gone.

exactly. how does just throwing someone out, or throwing a technical have any more weight over showing a card??? that writer is terrible.

but his comments are pretty ignorant. especially when he harps on this old bag of an argument:

Quote :
"9. Stoppage time. Why can't we know how much time is left? Why must it be such a mystery?"

the same old argument that has been covered ad nauseum on here and other sites. The timing is not that much of a mystery in the first place with the big display of stoppage time allowed... I mean, time in every sport is controlled very differently. Consider football. When the clock expires, but the play is still going on (ie there is still a scoring opportunity), the game is not whistled dead. I don't understand how that is so much different than soccer besides the fact that it takes a fairly easy decision by the referee. If 4' of stoppage are allotted and the clock hits 94' but someone is clearly attacking with a scoring opportunity, the play continues until progress is dead. Baseball has a defined ending but it is based on outs and innings, and even then there are stipulations on whether the last half of the inning is played or not. Hockey and basketball have a different timing system than the other sports mentioned and each one has their own rules that differ about when the clock stops and when it doesn't. It is not like there is such uniformity in all other sports and soccer sticks out like a sore thumb. I mean, there are a lot of "problems" and human error and judgement that are involved in game clocks that stop and start (including when these system malfunction or time is supposed to be put back on or taken off the lock etc.).

^he really showed his ignorance when he said that the vuvuzelas are played during "time-outs"

he also seems to think that goalie gloves impede goalies from making saves, rather than helping them.

i'm sure the thought he was being cute, or funny, but it's pretty terrible on the whole.

yea. im assuming it was a lame attempt at editorial trolling at which point he gets an F for effort and creativity.

as a goalkeeper, I would ask the exact opposite question: how would goalkeepers be expected to hang on to the ball without them. But I guess wide-receivers gloves and batting gloves are ok because they aren't "goofy"

That is exactly what that article was intended to do. It was extremely poorly executed though, for sports editorial trolling he needs to take cues from Gregg Doyel who really knows how to push buttons especially State fans.

I will agree with Reilly on one thing the vuvuzelas are annoying and have actually taken away from the normal World Cup atmosphere. These things are ten times worse than Thunder Stix.

i didnt think anyone was in the way to deflect it and it seemed the ball stayed true. maybe univision will show another replay soon

yeah maybe it did. they just showed another replay from behind forlan but the ref ran right in front of the play as it might have hit someone...but i think it barely glanced off the guy

Ive got this one #1. Maicon #2. Heinze #3. Tshabalala #4.

[Edited on June 16, 2010 at 3:07 PM. Reason : maicon and heinze are practically tied to me. ambitious byline shot vs upper 90 diving header]

I dunno, Heinze's loses points because he was wide the fuck open off a corner... still a great header though so I can't really argue with it in your list

forlan would be played by owen wilson if this were a romantic comedy. actually, i take that back. owen wilson looks more like pavel nedved

i like uruguay, and i was really concerned after they played like crap against a weak france side. but they can play with the best in south america, but have had recent troubles in the world cup. copa america seems to rotate between brazil, uruguay, and argentina.

south africa might need a little help from uruguay > mexico if they can't get an equalizer today.
