Colby Jackson out for the year as per N&O. You don't want anyone to get hurt of course, but he was a true-freshman and hopefully he'll have a full year to get better and he'll come back bionic

seriously, the injury bug is definitely still in full effect this year. It's just that we've been fortunate enough to have it claim only one of our starters as opposed to the complete raping of our team in previous years. 8/28/2009 8:31:50 AM |

Colby Jackson would've played this year, but I wouldn't worry about him not being able to. Taylor Gentry has packed on some size and we also have Ritcher at the FB spot. 8/28/2009 8:34:25 AM |

I think what I like about TOB the most is the quiet confidence that he exudes. It has to rub off on the players and the coaching staff.

It certainly has energized the Wolfpack nation, not that you really have to do that, but it's taken them to a new level. It's the buzz around town right now, and the opportunity to be on television and know that you are the first game that everybody is going to be watching is a special treat for the players." |

"Because I'm not an absolute moron."??? Not sure about that one Gregg, your article is completely off-target. First, that money comes from the pockets of willing boosters and flows to local businesses. In these economic times I'm sure those business owners appreciate having someone stay in their hotels, but I guess that is just fiscally irresponsible. "Stimulating" the local economy without government funds, say it isn’t so(We both know that even for state schools the money for the hotels come from football revenues, not any state or federal funds) Second, it is not only to protect students from being a moron, but also to hold meetings, feed the athletes, ensure everyone is accounted for, and to keep them away from "outside" distractions (the $5 mil booster is at least a controllable distraction, I too was a teenager once before and I don't know any teenage male that wouldn't answer the knock at the dorm room door from a girlfriend at 3am, pre-game night or not). Besides not everyone can play coked out of their mind like UNC’s Lawrence Taylor, I like the idea of the team I support being isolated from outside temptations. Remember, athletic scholarships are business investments, these hotel expenses are simply a cost associated with increasing the ROI (Return on Investment) of those scholarships. It's not arrogance, it's smart business if it increases the product on the field, thus increasing the number of paying viewers to watch that product.(NC State just had it's 9th consecutive year selling out season tickets) The fact is a university is a business, and like every business it must generate revenue. (Good Football = Higher Revenue) If staying in the hotel increases the level of play, which it makes sense that it would, then why wouldn't a university do it if they had the resources to do so. Third, why single out NC State??? Are you a UNC-CH grad?/bandwagon fan? Finally, I understand that everyone has this nostalgic feeling about football, I do as well. It would be nice if the money wasn't involved and your average kid could come out of the stands and play like the "Aggie 12th Man" (that is a reference to Texas A&M in case you are wondering). It is wrong what $5 mil can buy in Gainesville, but in the end this is a business. Look at it this way, lots of young men (and women in all the sports Football supports) get high quality education OPPORTUNITIES because of the revenue football programs generate. Additionally the University of Florida Athletic Dept just gave $8 MILLION back to the University of Florida to help the university cover expenses. They did it because Tim Tebow stayed at a Holiday Inn Express the night before each game and because he did they generated more revenue. This meant they turned a profit, which allowed them to give $8 million to the University general fund! That makes $86K investments in hotels seem a lot less shocking than you try to portray. BTW NC State's Quarterback is Russell Wilson, All-ACC 1st Team QB and ACC ROY in 2008. You might not know him now, you will by November.
