Assume everyone went through the exact things that are in their flashbacks in real life and that the only difference is they al never got on a plane or stranded on an island. They all go to this counsling center to deal with all of their problems. They all sign up to do this case study and they sign forms giving someone in their family notice to pull them out of the study if that someone in their family wants them out. that's how they could "get out"

Another way they get out is maybe the system that's "controlling" them isn't reacting well with certain people. Maybe Boone and Shannon reject the case study, maybe Scott was jealous that Steve's name began with an S and just couldn't deal with being in a group with another S-person. Perhaps the study was adversely affecting them so they had to be taken out of it.

So I just rewatched it:

In the first part of the season 1 finale, Rousseau is talking to Locke Jack Kate Arzt and Hurley on the way to the Black Rock and she's talking about the dark territory and says that it is where "my team got infected; where Martin lost his arm." (At least sounds like Martin with a French accent.)

They guy in the Dharma Orientation Video says his name is Dr. Marvin Candle. If you pay attention, it is very obvious that his left arm is prosthetic; he never uses it.

Do you think that Dr. Marvin Candle is Martin?

What is up with prosthetic limbs and this show? Martin lost an arm, Dr. Marvin Candle has a fake left arm, Sam Tooey (the guy in Australia that Hurley went to see to ask about the numbers) his wife has a fake leg and the farmer that Kate stayed with had a fake right arm. Oh and Locke was paralyzed, but is now better. Weird.
