I apologize if I go over a few things that have already been touched. This pesky thing called work got in the way of arguing about recruiting this morning. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Quote :
"We were recruiting at this level under the previous coach but that wasn't good enough for some people."

We weren't in it for 3 of the Top 5 players in any class. I agree, that it means NOTHING unless we actually land one or two of them.

Quote :
"Herb was in the process of recruiting Scottie Reynolds, Robbie Hummel, and Chris Wright during his last season.....he was after good talent. Don't downplay that."

His last full class was more highly rated than any class we've had under Lowe. The Fells, Costner and McCauley class was ranked 11th best by Scout.com.

Quote :
"how did that work out?"

In terms of on the court effect of the program, about the same as Hickson. Obviously totally different situations but we didn't parlay the big signings in to directly related on court success.

Quote :
"Hickson wasn't a cancer to the team? You are joking. "

By all accounts, he was a hard worker and a good teammate. Hardly a cancer. He just couldn't pass out of a double team to save his life...

Quote :
"IMO, Herb's development was a bit questionable. "

I agree with that. Though, I am just as worried about Lowe in this respect. I pin the non-development of ALL THREE of our Top 100 recruits in both Sendek and Lowe, since they both played a part in their NC State careers. I continue to refuse to believe that all three of these guys are just overrated hacks. They are talented players who were not utilized and developed by two regimes at NC State to me.

^^They were light years ahead of the Jeremy Hyatt talent was my point.

Archie would be our best guard if on the team now how could you hate on him? He's defense wasn't so good because the mug was only 5'8". I still say if he was 6'2" he could have played pro ball. If he was open he was money.

Hodge's class was higher than that (If your point was that this class was Herb's best...?).

No doubt Herb could recruit. I think all but one of his classes (Mike O' Donnel's class I think?) was top 25... if not it had to be one of his very early classes. History of those first few classes gets all run together for me

posted on the monkey board
http://www.thememphisedge.com/2009/01/16/cousins-memphis-is-the-leader/

I just returned from Birmingham, where I went tonight to watch the DeMarcus Cousins-Derrick Favors game, which was also broadcast nationally on ESPN. It’s late, and I will have a full story on the Cousins situation in Saturday’s newspaper, but the 6-foot-11 center from Mobile, Ala., said emphatically tonight that Memphis is the leader in his recruitment. His coach at LeFlore High School, Otis Hughley, confirmed that Memphis is leading on Cousins and said he felt the Tigers would be hard to beat at this point in time.

This being my first time to see Cousins in person, I was surprised at how big he actually is. He really sees the court well for a big man, and some of the passes he made were Kevin Love-esque. He needs to get in better shape and will have to learn how to play hard all the time, but he’s a tremendous talent and a future pro without question.

It's been asked a few times about Memphis being able to handle Cousins and Wall in their class next year.

Well a quick internet research trip for me and I found out that Taggart is as good as gone since he already graduated. Most think he'd leave to play overseas or even in the D-League...

Tyreke Evans is as good as gone. He will be a Top 20 pick already and it was pretty much a given he was a one and done from what I recall.

I don't know where that puts them but they will almost certainly have room for Cousins AND Wall should they both pick Memphis unfortunately...

I mean, I don't know the ins and outs like some guys on here... Wall hasn't really hinted at who is leading in public to my knowledge. Cousins seems to be a heavy Memphis lean if he doesn't go to UAB now though.

Just saying they'll likely have room for both on their roster.

T-Mobile Invitational Showcase is on CBS. Favors was in it. His team lost in the championship game to Lawrence North, the school that Greg Oden came from. There are a lot of other D-I commits that played in this tournament.

Quote :
"- Best Watergate-like moment: Like us reporters normally do when seeking interviews, we wait outside locker rooms for players and coaches to come out. Since there weren't enough locker rooms to hold all eight teams, some were placed back at Hammons Student Center.

Yes, it's a haul from JQH to HSC, so I was the only one hanging out. There was no accidental foot traffic.

That's what was so curious when Kansas coach Bill Self came rolling through. I was puzzled because it's an evaluation period in the NCAA's eyes, meaning coaches and recruits can have no contact, except for an exchange of greetings.

Of course, Wall is the top uncommitted recruit. Self had to know I was a reporter and even said hello to me.

I just thought he'd stand there, maybe even wave to Wall to let him know he was there. Instead, when the Holy Rams poured out of the locker room, Self was excited:

Self: "Johnny, great win man. You really played well."

Wall: "Thanks."

Self: "I'm not supposed to be talking to you, and you know that, but I just wanted to tell you that was a great win."

Then Self vanished.

I called Missouri State NCAA compliance officer Kyle Yates, curious of Self's behavior. Yates insisted what Self did was wrong, but not unique, as I suspected.

"(He) definitely shouldn't have done that, but it's not uncommon," Yates said. "If he would have sat him down and had a conversation, that would have been a big deal."

Still, it was no accident he was there in that isolated location. And Memphis coaches John Calipari and Orlando Antigua didn't do it either."

Whoo hoo! Cousins will be taking an OV to State!

http://ncstate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=902333

Quote :
"After the game, Cousins provided some insight into his recruitment. He gave Rivals.com a school list consisting of Memphis, Wake Forest, North Carolina State, Kansas State and Virginia Tech. Having committed to UAB prior to his senior season, Cousins has a full slate of official visits at his disposal. Three of those visits are spoken for by Memphis, North Carolina State and Kansas State."

Quote :
"Richard Howell (Wheeler, signed with North Carolina State) 16 points on 5-11 shooting, 1-1 from three, 5-6 from the line, 5 rebounds, 1 steal, 2 assists, 5 turnovers in 22 minutes

Howell played with more aggression than he did at the City of Palms in December. Strongly believe he can find a niche as a blue collar player at North Carolina State."

And although he was once on the verge of signing with UAB, the Blazers are no longer an option for Cousins, with or without Mike Davis as head coach after UAB refused a contractual agreement to allow Cousins out of his Letter of Intent if Davis were to leave.

"UAB is out of the picture, but I'm still down with Mike Davis," he said. "It's a bad situation down there, and nothing is going to change. Even if Coach Davis is there, I'm not going there.""

Maybe we should hire Mike Davis to our staff. He could have a title similar to Amato's at FSU. Mike Davis for Executive Associate Head Coach!

If I were Sid, I'd hesitate to bring in a big time recruit for the UNC game. It's definitely a tough decision.

- Do you want them to come in and see the great atmosphere that our fans create for big games like Duke or UNC?

- Or do you want them there for the possibility of us getting slaughtered and watch them take the life out of our crowd and our fans leave early and possibly boo the coach??

i wouldn't. it would show our fans at their most passionate.

it would show the essence of what playing at this school is. as long as the team plays like they give a damn, i don't see how it could hurt. even if we lose big, it could easily show him that his talent could be utilized right away.
