Southern tier choklat imperial stout was amazing. great chocolate malt and real chocolate flavors, but a little sweet by the end, like boozy hershey's syrup.
Spanish Peaks Big Bite Peach Wheat was alright, but there was a strong perfumey floral note that I found off-putting and weird aftertaste with the peach flavoring.
I love, love, love this spicy beer! peppercorn rye

nice, had a Choklat for V-day with some chocolate fondue and it was phenominal paired with dessert. might try to pick up another bottle with some creme brulee (have 1 creme in cellar)
yea, I had the Fantome Saison (old label) and it's amazing complex and by far the best saison I've ever had.
good to know about the gratitude, that will def. slide it down my list a bit, didn't realize it was that expensive.

the haul i posted on the last page was all from Brawley's. He only had a case of 10th Annv. Ruination so i'm sure that's gone, but had tons of the SN/RR Brux Wild Ale. That's probably the best haul i've gotten from him in more than a month. Most of that is probably due to the slow summer release season though.7/11/2012 4:54:06 PM |

it's unfortunately only growler fills, but the best of houston (and texas in my mind) is by far karbach's BB hellfighter. i've found it at whole foods before.
if you're into wheats, their weisse versa is a wit/hef combo that's pretty tasty. cans/draft.
for a dipa id say st. arnold's endeavour, but the batch that's on the floors right now is super old.
for best bottle shop selection, check out d&q on richmond, and spec's downtown. they're both pretty close to each other.
for joints to check out, hay merchant and petrol station are my normal haunts. really good tap selections.
buffalo bayou is supposed to be decent stuff, draft only, new brewery, but i haven't had much of their stuff yet.
of course, if you find live oak's hef on tap, you better get some. (it's on at hay merchant right now)
there's really not a whole plethora of interesting TX stuff. there's a reason why it's got a shitty reputation
[Edited on July 11, 2012 at 5:00 PM. Reason : karbach only started selling beer in like, september.. as a young brewery, they're promising] 7/11/2012 4:56:23 PM |

Yeah, cider probably doesn't count, but I try them to see if there's something my wife will like. Thought this one was pretty good.

iirc, if you ordered from them, and ordered 6 bottles, it ended up being ~$25-27/bottle. I'd pay $25 locally no problem.
the box had 3 cascade sang noirs, 1 goose island juliet, 1 gi lolita, 2 rr consecrations, 2 rr supplications, and was supposed to be a temptation, but couldn't get it, so we've set up a trade in the future for a later batch... for extras it had a pliny the elder bottled july 3rd(!!!!), a rr row 2 hill 56(!!!!), russian river salvation(!!!), goose island christmas ale, three floyds mild one pale, some barleywines i havent heard of.
despite the temptation hiccup, i will be trading with this guy again.
just heard from my hill farmstead mule... he's picking up 43 growlers there and 8 cases of heady at the alchemist... lol.

wow man, that is one hell of a trade. that's around ~$175 value not including the extras. did you get the better end of that deal? how could you not? 7/12/2012 7:42:40 AM |
pilgrimshoes Suspended 63151 Posts user info edit post |
it ended up being pretty close to $ for $.
I got the better end by like, <$10 for cost. considering i picked up things off the shelf and sent them, i'm pretty satisfied with the deal. i'm not sure how he got the GI/3floyds things around san francisco, but hey, i'm ok with it. not sure if those were parts of other trades, or what.
my end of the trade included 4 boulevard love child #2, and a handful of other boulevard smokestack and limited release and jester king things.
shipping JK farmhouse bottles makes me nervous. JK advises not to ship them, as their yeast strain sometimes goes apeshit at higher temperatures and can burst bottles in transit. gamble gamble.
on the JK front though, a new run of boxer's revenge is supposed to come out soon, and i plan on getting a bunch of it. that shit is delicious. bigger run this round.
i don't care about screwing people. i just want both sides of trades to be happy with what they get and think they got a good deal. if it's kept as close to $ for $, that is what i prefer. in my mind, beers aren't really and shouldn't be considered assets, but i can see how that's evolving in the community...

i want to know how that guy is going to haul 43 growlers home. and the shipping, he must have a lot of time on his hands.
yeah, i would want trades to be fair and as close to $4$ as well. it's like we talked about in PM, I tend to put more value on what i'm receiving than what i would ship as those beers are all new and undiscovered to me. 7/12/2012 10:01:55 AM |
pilgrimshoes Suspended 63151 Posts user info edit post |
exactly.
opening a box is like being 8 on christmas morning all over again.
even if you've essentially "paid" for them already.
i'm not sure how the guy does it either. i'm going in with another guy from houston to cut down on shipping costs, and we paypal him upfront before he goes to HF. thew two of us are in for 6 growlers and 2 HT 4 packs.
their growler glass should be pretty sweet too.

Dubbel = Double Tripel = Triple Quadrupel = Quadruple
This is how it is in the English language. Belgian's may pronounce it differently (although I don't think so) but they're probably speaking Dutch or English with a Belgian-accent. I would seriously laugh at anyone who called it Dooble. I hate it when people try to sound smart when they actually are incredibly ignorant.
