quick detail on the CR-V, its had a lot of road salt and crap on it from the Raleigh to Denver drive.
First time I used a dual action polisher and I think it came out well. Could still improve some I'm sure, and I need to figure out a way to get the window trim back to black (looks like mold is growing on it).
Anyway, I'm pretty happy with myself.

Replaced the driver's side window regulator (again) on the Crown Vic a few weeks ago. Second time in less than a year, which is annoying. At least it was easier to replace this time because I replaced all the rivets with bolts the first time around.
Just tonight I purchased a new head unit and door speakers, as the original stereo is still rocking a cassette deck only and the front speakers were pretty badly blown. To be expected after 17 years, I suppose. While I'm installing those I'm probably going to replace the window motor on the passenger side which is currently very sluggish.
If I can find one locally that I don't have to paint, I also want to replace the header panel with one from a '92. That was the debut year, with a grille-less nose similar to the Mustang GT and Taurus of the time. They tacked on a chrome grille for the rest of the production run to keep the old folks happy, but I've always thought the grille looks cheap and small, whereas the original "aero" nose fit the car much better. Have to find one though, and it has to be relatively cheap, so we'll see. 4/9/2014 9:57:16 PM |

The stupid old mouse track seatbelt in my car has been on the fritz lately. Bought and installed some JDM s13 manual seat belts (adjustable courtesy holder thing and all). I didn't even know manual s13 belts existed until 48 hrs ago. Sure beats dealing with electrical gremlins.
I also helped my friend put the body panels back on his freshly-painted s13.

^^^FYI those motorized seat belts are warrantied for life by the manufacturer.
Saturday I rear ended my father's car while following him to my grandmother's apartment It was one of those scenarios where we were both waiting to turn left onto a street. A decent sized gap opened up and my dad started moving forward. I thought I had enough time as well so I started accelerating while eyeballing the approaching car down the street to the right. Welp, my dad changed his mind because he didn't think we both could make it onto the road and stopped. Bam, right into the back of the Volvo station wagon
Obviously my fault but my dad has apologized countless times to me since then. Bumper cover is scratched up a good bit, and has one groove/dent in it that looks to have scrunched up the paint. Oh, and whenever the headlights are on now one of the fog lights also goes on, though dimmer than if it were actually on.
GD it, calling Liberty Mutual later this morning.

- Even with the recent increase in prices from the rising popularity of drifting, you can still pick one up for a low couple grand in nice running/driving shape. - They're fairly light and handle well right out of the box. - They're fairly reliable right out of the box. (Old engines are old, but generally no catastrophic failures. Trans, driveshaft, and axles are fine to/past 400hp, diff is easily good to 500+. Brakes, hub bearings, etc. all last without issues. No obvious weak points.) - The front MacPherson strut style was practically made for drifting (gobs of castor, easy aftermarket camber adjustability, easy steering modifications, etc.). - They're absurdly easy to work on (10, 12, 14, 17, and 19mm will pretty much take apart the entire car). - There's a HUGE aftermarket ranging from ebay/china to CNC'd/forged things, so prices stay competitive and low. - There's a big crowd of technically-minded guys (both in the drifting and road racing communities) that have encyclopedia-sized threads on proper suspension geometries, DIY projects, etc.
Basically it's a great inexpensive FR platform that you won't feel bad about putting into a wall. 4/21/2014 11:41:07 PM |

not really.
http://dreamingin302ci.blogspot.com/2013/11/suspension-tuning-primer-2-look-at-big.html
Quote : | "lowering a Mcpherson strut car drops roll center dramatically. Something being lower on a car may sound good, as "lower is generally better". But in the case of roll center, not really. Roll center is the geometric point in space at which a car rolls around when the suspension compresses. Roll center is almost always lower than the CG of the car. The greater the distance of the roll center from the CG, the longer the roll couple. The roll couple acts as a lever on the car to make it roll. The longer the lever, the more roll. Problem is, CG doesn't drop as fast as roll center does. So when you lower a strut car, you are increasing geometric roll. AKA, you are making the car softer (all things being equal). So what, you ask? A softer front end = more suspension compression, = more positive camber + smaller front contact patch + more tire squirm = more corner entry understeer. So when you lower a car, you actually need stiffer springs just to counter the effect of the increased lever arm acting on the roll couple to begin with. Even with stiffer springs, you may end up with the same resulting roll stiffness as you were when you were stock. The GIF below shows roll center migration as a car is lowered and raised (the red dot is roll center). Included also is a diagram of roll center and CG. Notice the change in distance between the two when a car is lowered. " |

lol 1in10^9, keep smoking that internet bong.
Nissan's MacPherson design is far from perfect, but it's excellent for drifting. It allows for lots of steering clearance lock-to-lock. The cars come from the factory with plenty of castor, allowing the steering wheel to self-steer during corner initiations and transfers. The arms are very simple and easy to adjust with aftermarket parts. The tie rod pickup points are nearly level with the the LCA pivot points, making it quick/easy to adjust camber in the pits without throwing the toe terribly out of whack...
There's a good reason why damn near every car at a drift event is an S13/S14, and why very few people bother drifting E30s, E36s, RX7s, MK3 Supras, etc.
Edit: As for your bitching about the car being lowered… (A) half of the fun is looking cool, so I'm okay with trading some ride height for imperfect suspension geometries. It's a 20 year old car getting thrown at walls and other cars for god's sake. The name of the game is fun. And (B) forged/CNC'd roll center correction knuckles exist and they work wonderfully. Ask me how I know

im just pointing out to you that you are still wrong that macpherson strut has anything to do with 240s being good at drifting. in fact just the opposite. it has nothing to do with it.
what made 240s famous at drifting was the fact it was the most affordable, reliable, light rwd with awful f/r balance.
for the record i actually like your car the way it is and i certainly have no issues with lowering if done right. get the sand out of your vjj 4/22/2014 10:34:07 PM |

Yes, but they're not as loaded up with castor for effortless self-steer like the S-chassis. And the E36 has 1-pc FLCAs which makes further castor adjustment more difficult and narrow compared to the FLCA and tension rod combo on the S-chassis.
Edit: example of s-chassis preference as a recent-ish drift event. 12 drift cars pictured. 8 S13s, 4 S14s, 0 of anything else, lol https://scontent-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/t1.0-9/988825_10152031218383941_188640413_n.jpg

And what do you do sir... I did read the article and as dr p. pointed out its a pretty good find but full of opiniantion. It shows only a single geometry and as dr pepper probably knows from his 4 link build you can move 1 end of 1 link 1 inch and completely change the way the car drove... So congrats to him for posting 1 situation and a few charts on 2 different suspension designs without mentioning how arm length show tower location and triangulating the engine bay can make up for the flaws in the macpherson suspension.
Which btw what he doesn't show is that most factory double wishbones only slightly favor camber gain.... None of them have arm lengths so drastically different they have a significant amount more camber gain then the macpherson suspension.
I don't pipe dream anymore... I do have a project that I'm working on and it may have been more to bite off than I can chew...yes.... If you'd check the thread I just got my engine back and had to have new sleeves put in it because I did the smart thing and ran some diagnostics on it before putting it in the damned car. The cage is done, re-welded and all. I've been trying to play my cards close to my chest while keeping drp in the loop but fuck it... I should have had the car done by June but now it's going to be deep into the fall with the engine setback. I want the engine back in the car before it's painted so the metal flake all layes the same way. The engine being a 427 side oiler in aluminum is hard as balls to get sleeves for because it's not a big block ford, big block Chevy, ls motor mod motor, honda, or Subaru and they don't keep parts on the shelf for it. I should have went with the new modular ford v8 because it would have been easy powerful and reliable.... But I fell in love with the stock fe motor and decided to build the daddy of all fe motors. (Not really Blair Patrick made one that made 987hp n/a)
Right now I have a rolling chassis siting on ride tech coil overs and what was their 4 link rear end until I found out that at the drag strip I would be running a modified class with back halfed cars so I said fuck it rather than a 4 link that one link was made x length so it bolts into what was a leaf spring eyelet I'll make my own.. Which is done! Why haven't I shared? Because it might suck until the car moves how am I supposed to know? I'm considering making my own a arms too... Why you ask? Because the 53 year old stock ones have been known to break under the stress concentration of coil overs.
But right now my eyes are set on a new set of outer tierods for the tbird because there is still slop in the front end and the end links built into those are the only ones I haven't changed in the entire front end. (and I'm not talking about play in the steering wheel I can feel something loose move in relation to the other wheel sometimes)
You just tend to annoy me me because you just read bimmer forums and act like you know better than everyone because you spend your money on old bimmers with amazing chassis dynamics. Yeah I said it they are actually good cars... But then when I blast a 335 for being a horrible car you stand up for you beloved bimmers even though you know they are flawed... Chassis is great but I wouldn't buy a 5 year old car with an engine I can't trust to get me to work every day. Unless... I'm missing something?.. What do you do sir? What is your technical expertise? Maybe I should give you cred for more than flipping bimmers?

well, i ingested water into the engine of my Ram. it was only about knee deep, but unbeknownst to me, the intake hose had popped out of this little snorkel-ish thing and was just hanging straight down to about the bottom of the radiator, like a giant, Pensacola-floodwater drinking straw.
My buddy from work pulled it back to my house with his Jeep...I took all 10 spark plugs out today (took some contortion to reach all the way to the back on the driver's side), and now the damned starter won't engage (it would yesterday/last night; it just wouldn't turn over due to being hydrolocked).
I know that the odds that I'm fucked are pretty high, but hopefully I can just blow the water out by cranking it over, put new plugs in, change all the fluids, and be OK.
