So is this phone going to be that hard to find? Motorola and VZW have gone on record saying it won't be a problem.

It is going to be very hard to find in a store today...from what I am hearing best plan is to order it and have it shipped overnight. Personally I would order it today rather than later for the simple reason if it goes in to back order you will still be ahead of that.

I don't really see it getting backordered for an extended period. You definitely won't see the issue like the Incredible has as there's no screen shortage to deal with.

That and Motorola actually has experience mass producing phones on the scale necessary for these, lets face it up until HTC started making android devices they really never had to produce on that kind of volume.

I'm going to head to a store this afternoon to see if they have a floor model to look at in person. Am I wasting my time or should most Verizon stores have a floor model out by now?

just got back from the verizon store in winston-salem. apparently they decided to open an hour early at 7 rather than 8, and they sold the last droid x to a guy a couple spots in front of me in line . but they're gonna fedex it to me by monday, and i don't have to deal with the activation fee or mail-in rebate, so i guess i saved a little bit of money. i still would've liked to have made this post from the phone though.

Now they'e not sure if eFuse is actually enabled. All of the omap3 series processors apparently has it (i.e. Droid, Milestone, Droid X, Droid 2) but the question is whether or not Motorola actually enabled it. There's no bootloader security or efuse enabled on the Droid while the Milestone has a locked bootloader but the efuse still isn't enabled. They're thinking that the X may not be anymore locked down than the Milestone which still hasn't been cracked but the eFuse not being enabled would definitely be a good sign.

in theory, if 'efuse' was enabled, could an unsigned app trip it through some root exploit?

This is bullshit - Ordered mine at around 1am - Says it's still being processed yet people who ordered only a few hours ago already have shipping confirmations. What the fuck gives?

I got one this morning at the North Hills store. I got there about 7:15am. They were about 10 people already there. The store opened at 8am. The store manager arrived about 5 minutes after I did and said that everybody that was there then will get one.
I had to wait an hour before I got my X setup and purchased. It is a great phone.

so after being so close to winning the Droid X last night i thought about it more, got to see and play with the device some, and the more i read about the bootloader lockdown, i'm actually happy to own the Droid.

a) with a rooted Droid, my speed is near identical to the Droid X, both at 1Ghz
b) with a rooted Droid, I get wifi hotspot (wireless tether) same as Droid X
c) with a rooted Droid, I can run Froyo (2.2) and Flash now, no wait.
d) with a rooted Droid, I can obtain same battery life as Droid X, maybe better
e) with a rooted Droid, I can customize my theme
f) with a Droid, I can run Swype too

Now I do miss the lack of 4.3" screen, HDMI port, HD capture, 8MP camera and more memory, but I'm still happy with my Droid. I'm pretty sure I would have eBay'ed it for $700

Droid X

Ok:

I need awesome widgets to download
Live wallpapers
and an email app (unless someone with the droid x or similar can tell me how to set this up to my exchange server and pull my calendar from there down and so on)

and especially a place to download/get/make ringtones.

Thanks in advance.

Widgets: facebook/twitter/pandora/beautiful widgets/android agenda widget/scoreboard/news & weather/battery life

Corporate: to work with corporate email & calendar (exchange/outlook) you need to pay the $15 for corporate email access.

Ringtones: download and use this app: http://code.google.com/p/ringdroid/

you can access an ActiveSync enabled exchange server with the regular $29.99 data package. You should see a corporate option under the Email app to set up an exchange account. The Droid X should offer better exchange support than the Droid but if you need more, I'd suggest Exchange by Touchdown. Believe it's 19.99 but it's well worth it.

I find the multitouch keyboard on this thing to be amazing. So much better than the iPhone's. I type incredibly fast on it.

I can't get mine to connect to my wifi network. Good signal strength, password is correct, when I select the network it brings up the menu to connect, forget or cancel. If I press connect nothing happens. It doesn't even try to connect.

I'm still trying to figure out this whole Android thing.

^Agreed. The multitouch keyboard is fantastic (and better than the incredible in my opinion)

Anyway, did it pick up on the wifi automatically, or did you have to type the name in? If you had to type it in, it's case sensitive, and capitalizes the first letter you put in. I ran into a couple minutes of frustration figuring that out

It auto detected the network. There used to be an unsecured network in the area that I was going to try to see if it was my network but the Droid doesn't detect it even though the iPad 3 feet away does.

Picked up my Samsung Galaxy at lunch.... mother fucker is amazing. I had a G1 and a Nexus... this phone puts both to shame (shame may be a bit harsh regarding the N1).

Amazing quality... I would encourage EVERYONE to go play with one, especially the way Motolora is fucking up the Droid line. The Galaxy is already rooted.

Does anyone have problems with clicking the "install" button on apps in the market and being told that the app will be downloaded, but it doesn't actually get downloaded?

Wifi is definitely on, the widget shows it on and it's checked in the settings.

I've been using the doubletwist PC application to find apps and using the barcode scanner to install them. Haven't had any issues with that so far.

"Finally, The Droid Life Incredible Has Been Rooted
On 07.15.10, In Root (unlock), by Kellex

The unrEVOked team has released a one click root/recovery tool for the Droid Incredible that makes the process pretty seamless. Well, once you have proper drivers and other prep steps taken care of that is. So while we had a few minutes today (sounds weird on the Droid X launch day right?) we decided to take the plunge and see what kind of trouble we could get into. Process complete. The Droid Life Incredible has been rooted.
We’re working to get you video and written instructions by tomorrow. You are going to love this."

lol. IT BEGINS

The captivate doesn't offer much more than what's on my nexus one. I'm mainly looking for a better browsing experience and i'm hoping that the five inch screen delivers.

The Galaxy S line of phones are definitely ahead of the N1 in every category. Better CPU and better GPU. Pretty much a must have for anyone who wants to play games on a handset.

Sure, the Captivate obviously smokes the competition as it has the newest hardware. It's 6 months newer.. nearly a generation's worth of hardware when it comes to smartphones. Let's be honest though... those benchmarks only test gaming on the phones. If you look at your phone and see a gameboy then obviously the Captivate has something to offer. I work, email and (most importantly) browse the internet on my phone. Gaming is not in my interest. Web browsing experince is. If there are web browsing benckmarks out there then I'm interested. Regardless.. the screen (to me) is the most important aspect of a smartphone.

At ~250ppi the Nexus One 's screen (less than the 326dpi "retna display") makes my eyes strain when text on web pages that are fully zoomed out. It's not to say that it's unreadable... but it's just too damn small to read comfortably. Hell the iPad is only 1024x768... barely more than the iPhone 4 (960x640) but it provides a better web experience due to it's screen size. Sure..you can zoom in and out on a phone but that's the downfall of a smartphone with a small screen, I'd rather have the same resolution on a larger screen that represented a fuller browsing experience. I'm looking for a "tablet" that fits in a pocket.

Before dismissing the Nexus One off.. consider the Nexus One's Wifi AP/USB Tehering features that are currently unavailiable (for free) to any other Android phone that's not using 3rd party ROM. While I dont rule out the possibility... I'm sure AT&T (and Verizon's Droids) will disable those features in 2.2 since they A) control the OS / update schedule B) Offer competing data tethering data plans.

The Dell streak on the other hand should be like like the Nexus One in the fact that it is unsubsidized. Having the separation from a network's objectives *should* keep the end user's concerns at the top of the "todo" list for Dell rather than AT&T's.

You don't really need a custom rom for wireless tether. All you really need is root to get it working and Barnacle wireless tether doesn't even require a custom kernel. Also the Super AMOLED on the Galaxy S line should be crisper and easier to see than the regular AMOLED on the N1. That said, I still think the original droid has the best screen of the android phones with the size and resolution. I surf the internet more on it than I do my laptop.

That 5" screen coupled with the snapdragon = it's going to EAT battery. Plus it'll only launch with Android 1.6.

IDK, it just really doesn't appeal to me like that Captivate does.
