i remember thinking it sounded like it was shot down the first time i watched it, and then by the end of the episode, i was pretty sure i was right.

Nah, I don't think it was shot down. I think it just malfunctioned. May be difficult to keep a precision machine in top form without proper tools, equipment, and technicians. If it was shot down, what would have done it? I don't think a rifle bullet from the governors crew would have done the trick. If there was any type of ground to air missile, I think we would have clearly seen it, or the chopper crew would have reacted to seeing it. Oh, and they talked about this scene on AMC's site, detailing how they simulated a malfunction.

I thought this was odd too. It reminded me of the 28 days later scene of how it was a sausage fest and women were important to the soldiers, but then again the colony had a lot of women and men milling around anyway.

I can still see him keeping them alive because they are women regardless.

I think one of the silliest things on the show so far was the soldier ambush scene, it was totally unbelievable. They couldn't get off one single shot against a rag-tag militia? They didn't see any of them sneaking up and hiding in the bushes? I think the Governor was a bit too confident in assuming that a group of soldiers with automatic weapons wouldn't be able to get a shot-off at him from 20 feet away. One thing I really like about the show is it's a lot more realistic than most zombie movies. But that was silly.

i was following along on that website that updates with trivia and such during the episode, and when the helicopter appeared at the beginning, the trivia question was 'where did rick first see a helicopter?' -- so maybe? though i'm sure there are other pockets of military around.

Director, staff and pre-screeners say episode 4 of season 3 (tomorrow night) is arguably the best of the series.

They also (obviously) point out that epi 8 (when they take a break at half way point) and the finale are epic. Looking forward to it.

Yes, that was a great episode. That is some of the darkest stuff I've ever seen on TV. Some of the material was just too much for the actors to handle. I don't know if there is a young actor out there who could handle the Lori scene.

As much as I thought she was a stupid character, as in Lori makes stupid decisions and comments, I don't know that i'm happy about this. The number for females on the show just took a hit. Especially in Rick's crew. And Lori wasn't horrible when the writers weren't writing her in such a manner. I do respect the move to kill off such a big character though.

I suspect Carol will be back in the next episode though. And perhaps Andrea and Michonne will somehow meet up with Rick's crew at some point. That will probably have something to do with how the governor and rick's group meet.

I'm also glad Michonne now has a legitimate reason to be weary of the governor.
