yeah just like our stellar recruiting class this past year yielded great results

Williams is arguably the best player in the country, you don't just seamlessly move on without losing a beat when you lose a player like that

having sean miller on the sidelines > our last 3 coaches with a good recruiting class.

losing williams still sucks for them though.

^ The point of a firm assisting you is that you will never hear it from Miller or Yow.

I really think a Shaka Smart credibility watch is in order.

Yow said she wanted a coach who had a proven track record of being able to make the NCAA tourney and advance (I'm paraphrasing)

Smart doesn't fit that criteria

If you think Williams is making Miller look good, then you should be happy we aren't gonna land him at $3+M a year

I don't know if he's making him look good or not, hence why it will be interesting to see them next year without him

I'm staying away from reading into that PC too much. A lot of idiots on packpride have been parroting "5 years HC experience" for instance, when she never actually said that (iirc she said 5 years coaching experience)

Right.

But I was more referring to the fact that we aren't going to get a very desirable target, and because we're NC State we will end up settling....

I agree. The guidelines she laid out in the PC were not written in stone. They were just that...guidelines for hiring the ideal coach. If we swing and miss and couple, I'm sure she's willing (and smart enough) to find the next best thing. I trust that if we miss on our first few options (Millers, and whoever else they may be) we'll still wind up with a decent hire. I trust her a lot more than Lee Fowler.

Looks like Herb v 2.0. Good but is likely already at his ceiling. I'd rather go with a relative unknown than that.

yeah yeah, beggers can't be choosers and all that. Can I say Fuck Fowler for not hiring Miller six years ago again? I'd like to kick that man in the nuts right now.

bullshit that was hindsight. Miller was a good coach at xavier even then. Granted, it wouldn't have been a slam dunk hire at that time, but it damn sure would have been more proven than sid lowe... and fowler didn't even interview the guy.

^^^^^I wouldn't have been all that excited about Miller being hired back then. He was a Herb disciple and we wanted to get as far away from that as possible. Clearly, we should have made the move back then...but at the time I thought (and so did a lot of people) that it was best not to hire a Herb asst.

well, 1) there wasn't much public about our interest or his rejection of us, so if he did use us for a raise then he did so quietly. 2) He has already turned us down, but its unlikely (just a guess) that he has begun any negotiations with the Arizona AD yet.

Noone is saying it would have been a slam dunk no risk hire like he would be now. But he damn sure was less risk than Lowe. I mean, we were in serious negotiations with Beilein at the time who runs basically the same offense as Herb so obviously we weren't THAT concerned with completely avoiding anything Herb.

^^I think, at that time, it was best to avoid Miller. That didn't mean we should have gone after Lowe or Beilein (who I and most people I knew were against), but I cannot blame Fowler for not going after Sean Miller at that time. Was it mistake? Absolutely...I wish we could go back in time and make that hire. The program would be in much better shape if it had been in Sean Miller's hands for the last 5 years. I would have been against Miller being hired 5 years ago...clearly I would have come around if his results at AZ are any indication of what he would have done here...but given the circumstances I do not blame Lee Fowler at all for not going after Sean Miller.

I am kind of afraid that now that the other coaches know how much we have to throw around they'll all hold out until we offer at least $2m+ in desperation, this will probably happen around mid-May

I think that as a college bball fan, I am happy at what Miller is able to do at Zona so that their tradition does not just fall off.

Dont care so much that we did not nab him

regardless of how angry people were at the time, i'm sure people would have realized that someone being a herb assistant does not automatically mean they run the weave and heave.

also wtb brad stevens for a lot of not my money.

I'm concerned how much we spend not because I'm paying for it, but because it will have an effect on the athletic department as a whole. Future coach isn't being paid from some account that exists in a vacuum.
