Ill be happy when that happens for a week, right now its always just false hope, one day of small gains followed by 4 of big losses. Actually Ill be happy when I can say I made money today and actually mean it, rather than meaning I recouped a small amount of my losses haha.

whoever that was that bought GM last week, I sure hope you are selling it today. unless the government steps in, which I sure hope they don't, they are going bankrupt and there is nothing they can do to stop it

yeah i spent all weekend looking at good buys, but now that the market is up, i don't wanna be buying now.

of course the question is, have we already hit bottom and is this the beginning of the upswing, or yet another sucker rally?

F and GM are high risk high reward stocks. It's hard to imagine either or both of them failing, and if and when they recover, being in now will net large returns.

Other really good buys all with really really low P/Es:

MSFT
GE
JNJ
PFE
DIS
T
VZ

Another stock i like is MVL. They're making money hand over fist with all of the marvel movies over the last several years, which has also drummed up more comic book sales. The nice thing is that most of the money is being made with intellectual property (movies, video games, toys, and other merchandise), and requires little risk on the part of Marvel itself.

I dont know a whole lot about the stock market, but if GM's share prices have gone up ~1.5 points today, isnt that a good sign for the company?

guys, plz read:

i'm not taking a position on it, but it kind of resonates with all the baby boomers retiring and pulling their money out in order to live on, and all those Aztec/Mayan/nostradamus - type prophecies that claim the world will end in 2012 (not to mention the large hadron collider )

^^share price has absolutely nothing to do with the state of a business on a short term basis. long term, price follows value...and GM's price is down about 80% the last year. the only way they can survive is to continually take on debt, which will ultimately destroy the company.

^^^^^that is a pretty good list, and really what people should be buying right now - blue chips. think long term here guys, specifically GE and JNJ are at great values right now even with today's bounce

Need your help/opinions. Does anyone have a comparison chart for Pros/Cons of the various online active trading sites like scottrade, etrade e.t.c ?

Just looking to play around with a few hundreds, I have the longterm investment secured through other subsidized means.

I dont think there is too much doubt left with less than 2 hours. It hasnt been volatile up and down like it was last week throughout the day. Spent most of the day solidly up 450+

You can use zecco.com also, it is not as reputable as scottrade or etrade but it does allow free trading (limited).

For once I am happy to have been wrong haha, the question is how will things be towards the end of the week. We had one of these sucker rallys about 2 weeks back and well we see how that worked out. People who bought late last week made some money today, more than likely they will be taking those shares back off though at the slightest hint we are headed back down. I still dont think we have bottomed yet unfortunately but maybe today will put a bit of confidence back into people.

Yeah I mean had I bought anything at all on friday and it was up today especially more than 20% I would be selling it right now as we speak. Ive learned my lesson on holding anything that is profitable in this market.

I didnt reallocate anything in my 401k, I am thinking I am buying it cheaper (only good thing)...maybe the international portion will look slightly better after today but with this market, by Friday we could be right back where we started today.

Stocks Mount in Strong All-Day Rally

Quote :
"Heavy Buying Starts at Opening

Sentiment toward the stock market, from the very outset of the day showed improvement. Thousands of investors all over the country, owning their share certificates outright, had heeded the advice of their bankers and brokers not to sacrifice their holdings. In addition, the overnight developments had persuaded many thousands, at home and abroad, that stocks were a buy at these levels.

A stupendous volume of cash was marshaled at the market's opening for the purchase of stocks. The banking consortium stood by with practically unlimited buying power to be thrown under leading stocks, if necessary. But, as it developed, the buying power furnished by investors was sufficient not only to stem the tide of the decline, but to start stocks along the road of recovery.

Rich men bought stocks heavily yesterday. Poor men bought, too, as evidenced by the tremendous odd lot business transacted. The man of medium means, with surplus cash, rushed it to the market. Most of the big wire houses did the biggest business in their history, and the purchasing orders came from every section of the country. Bankers declared it the most remarkable exhibition of confidence in the country's prosperity and of its future they had ever seen.
"

Quote :
"
Much Short Covering

The tremendous volume of stocks purchased at the opening of the market and the subsequently advancing quotations gave assurance that the collapse had been stayed. Liquidating orders were canceled by the thousands and some prospective sellers actually turned buyers. There was a great amount of short covering, too. Sentiment brightened perceptibly, and as the market got away to a good start, with the best sort of buying at its back, the pressure of buying, orders from the interior began to be felt in the leading stocks. Foreign orders, too, began to reach the Stock Exchange and the Curb and stocks mounted.

Trading was on a wide scale, extremely active and much more orderly than on the preceding two days. But after such a storm as has swept the market, it was by no means calm or placid trading. There were frequently one, two and sometimes five points between sales in the leading issues. Here and there minor air holes were reported, as some stocks not traded in on the previous day dropped sharply. The general trend, however, was strongly upward and closing prices were just about the best of the day, on the Stock Exchange, the Curb Market and over the counter.
"

Quote :
"
No Bull Market Expected

It was a day of recovery that bankers and brokers believe will be extended until stabilization has been completed. Even the most hopeful in the financial district do not believe that the bull market can be resumed within the next few months. It is thought that stocks will become stabilized at their actual worth levels, some higher and some lower than the present ones, and that the selling prices will be guided in the immediate future by the worth of each particular security, based on its dividend record, earnings ability and prospects. Little is heard in Wall Street these days about "putting stocks up."

That's what I did. I put a couple grand into AIG and FRE on Friday and cashed out this afternoon. I'm thrilled to actually make some good profit for once. Got about a 30% return between the two. I'm afraid there's going to be a major sell off Tuesday.

Always use trailing stops. Nothing is worse than being profitable and holding on to a stock only to see it turn into a paper loss. Then you either have to sell it or hold on to it and tie your cash up for god knows how long.

question, so capital loss can be tax deduction up to $3000. So if I've purchased a stock (held less than a year) and I sell it for a loss of say $500 and report this capital loss on my tax forms, then do I get that $500 back from the government? Seems like it's a no-risk proposition if you only buy $3000 worth of stock? I'm sure this can't be right?

ah okay, gotcha, that makes a lot more sense.. I'm still learning this tax shit with capital gains/losses. One thing I'm finding is that the government wants to make tax laws hard as fuck to understand.

I shorted FSLR yesterday morning for a couple grand but haven't been able to get enough time at my desk lately to do much more.

I think tomorrow if the market gaps up tomorrow morning I will buy TWM. I think the general trend will be down for the next week or two and most likely longer than that so if it goes in the red intraday I think I'll still be safe.

Have any of you guys looked at the details of the deal that GS cut with Buffet? IIRC he's going to collect 500M$ a year from that. With a recession/depression oncoming, and that kind of $exas being payed out, I can't see GS staying over $100 at the end of this quarter.
