gotta give me some credit for being Gott's biggest defender early on.

To be honest he hasn't been quite as good as I thought he'd be. The defensive problems I was worried about have definitely surfaced here.

The offense has been as effective as I thought it would be, but that is partially a product of how talented we are offensively.

The thing that's been truly impressive so far is the recruiting. I had high expectations for him (even Herb and Lowe had success recruiting here) but he's definitely surpassed my expectations.

We can become a perennial tournament team and a ACC/NCAA contender under Gottfried there is no doubt about that.

He's done a good job. It hasn't been all roses that's for sure though and we haven't truly turned the corner yet.

We had a fortunate circumstance to play a banged up UVA/UNC team in the tourney and we cashed in. We also had a fortunate ACC schedule this year.

We also made part of our own destiny by sweeping Miami.

We've done some good things, but let's not kid ourselves. We have a talented team that has gained quite a bit of experience over the course of the season. We should achieve.

uh? Yeah i said we were still losing a lot of games (which we were).

It doesn't mean I don't think it wasn't a great hire given the circumstances.

If we are honest about the team's performance this season they underachieved as a collective body of work.

They lost to a shit team, didn't fare that well against the mediocre teams, and didn't beat good teams.

Overall, that's pretty unimpressive. BUT. We made the fucking tournament which is something. We should have done that anyway, but it took some time to wring the losing attitude out of this team.

This weekend we will find out if they've made the leap. They need to win this game against an inferior opponent. We will be underdogs to Georgetown or Belmont, but we need to play for the win. If we go out and get wiped out, it will be tough to swallow. Basketball is a game that can be won or lost. You don't always have to win, but you should always put yourself in position to win. That's what good teams do. Bad teams lose. Marginal teams win when they play well and lose when they don't.

UNC doesn't always play well, but they always put themselves in position to win by doing the things they can control like rebounding, defense, and playing smart.

I don't see how you couldn't be happy with Gottfried from the start. I'm not going to go back and find my original posts from back in the early days of the hire to back it up, but I was one of his supporters from the minute I found out. He has a great resume and considering where the coaching search appeared to be going (Sidney Lowe pt 2) I was thrilled.

I liked the Gottfried hire from Day 1...I just didn't post about it on here. Other than Sean Miller, I wasn't too ecstatic about our other choices. I liked that he had previous success at a mid-major and a major conference school. Was worried about the defensive aspect of his coaching...but after the Herb and Sidney eras, I was dying for a good offensive coach.

And Mike Bell would have never given us more than 5 pts and 2 rebs a game (to go along with 4 missed threes/game and 3 weeks missed a year because of a knee sprain). He MIGHT have been physically ready to play in the ACC by his senior year. A lot of shitty ACC players could have averaged 20 pts jacking up shots on the shittiest team in a shitty conference.

iirc, most people seemed to be in the "fuck it, we could have done much worse" camp. a few were more optimistic than others...but i seem to remember most people being cautiously optimistic. no one was doing cartwheels over the hire, but everyone seemed relatively happy with gottfried considering it looked like we were gonna wind up with gregg marshall at best.
