That dropship is a BEAST. I brought one down last night with a grenade though, and that was sweet.

already picked up some HDMI cables (just ordered tonight). filled out my rebate form for 5 free blu rays, and have need for speed carbon. waiting on gran turismo 4 or 5 whichever the new one is (dont keep up with all this stuff)

im guessing another controller should be bought.

how is fifa 08?

I got to see Uncharted the other day.

It's like they tried to take everything good about Prince of Persia, somehow made it less cool, then tacked on a bunch of other things I hate in games along with a crappy swimming animation.

But hey, at least when he gets out of the water, his clothes are wet!

Furthermore, it'd be cooler if when having to turn certain things in the game they used the SIXAXIS rather than "wiggle your thumbstick around to turn the porthole cover".

Ratchet and Clank (sp?) actually isn't that bad either judging from the demo.

And of course GT5: Prologue coming out next month.

Actually just hook it up to the internet and download PSN demos and see which games you like to play.

I do recommend you buy Flow, its stupid fun when you're bored.

Anyone up for Rock Band? A few of my friends get together every Thursday night at Woodys Sports Bar in Cary. Just thought I would throw it out there. Feel free to come by and play.

**Oh, we usually start around 8ish and go till about 1am.

^ I'm wondering the same thing. got a bunch of money and gift cards to best buy for Christmas and am seriously debating the purchase. Ghostbusters III comes out later in 2008, but Rock Band looks bad ass now. I'm trying to decide if I should go ahead and get it or wait it out, but I'm not sure what I'd be gaining by waiting . . .

Can anyone with the 80GB model comment on backwards compatibility with PS2 games? Sony's site seems to indicate that most problems have been fixed with the current firmware, but I'm wary of taking their word for it.

Particularly concerned about games like GT4, San Andreas, FFXII, God of War, Star Ocean...

Yeah, they can. The 80GB models have software emulation, like the ones released in Europe.

It's only the 40GB models that don't have any backwards compatibility with PS2 games.

official backwards compatibility list http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus

or you could pick up the 60GB, which has fewer compatibility issues. people are still selling it on ebay, amazon, etc. for $400

and the 5-free blu-ray offer takes FOREVER for many people. Check your status here: https://portal.archway.com/run/Lookup?key=BVISTA

Here is my list demo recommendations... at least the ones i haven't deleted so far:

Racing
Burnout Paradise (wonderful crash physics)
DiRT
MX vs. ATV (kinda similar to DiRT)
Full Auto 2 (w/ weapons)
Juiced2: HIN
Stuntman: Ignition
GT5 Prologue (suzuki circuit only v_v)
Need for Speed prostreet (not much unique to this one... skippable)

Spors
FIFA08
WinningEleven2008 (another soccer game: Jap server only)
NBA08 (1080p)
skate
Go! Sports Ski (222MB; demo may only appear on Jap server)
NHL 2k8 (if you're into hockey)
collegehoops 2k8 (ONLY because you can play against UNC in the demo)

Other
Blazing Angels 2 (great SixAxis flying mode)
Armored Core (if you are really into mechs)
Bladestorm (i'll probably delete this, 'cause it doesn't seem like it takes THAT much strategy)
TimeShift (reviews weren't good, but still worth demo-ing)

Or if you want some small demos:
snakeball
pixeljunk
kazuo
blast factor
bacterius (almost the same as blast factor)
XI[sai] (game where you move dice around)

I like Ninja Gaiden but would at least rent it rather than demo it

^^ you can't play ps3 backups without a blu-ray burner. iso loader also does not exist. to play ps2 IMPORTS (maybe backups also?), you have to either take advantage of a glitch in older firmware (now fixed) or solder some switches to over-ride the slot-load motor. this procedure has burned out chips for many users and scratched the lens for many others.

goto that thread and get an hdmi cable (if you can use it).

i saw on slickdeals a while ago that they had a controller for 9.99 after rebate and stuff. i think they go for like $30 or $40 in the stores.

Thanks. I have to use bestbuy for the PS3 (gift cards) but I'll look into getting the HDMI for myself and my parents need one too. What about the little...controller charger? Does it come with one wire to plug it in to the unit, or does that cost extra, and does anybody know about the blu-ray remote or seperate charging base?

gtHD isnt bad. glad its free, i would have hated paying for it (i think that was the original idea from playstation).

i think ill keep playing NFS prostreet.

im loving FIFA08. i went to best buy to buy it, sold out, kinda odd i guess.

hooked the PS3 up with HDMI cable to the TV and ran a optical cable from PS3 to the home theater system.

damn just starting up the system sounds good.

OK! I have been playing with making my PS3 and G4 Mac talk to each other lately. Here's some info I've found helpful.

If you are using airport wireless technology (in my case, G4 hooked up to ethernet and hosting wireless network via internal airpot card) and are password-protecting your network, MANY gaming devices (Nintendo DS, Wii, PS3, etc.) have a hard time finding the DNS info and getting assigned a IP. You will want to assign IP manually to get your PS3 on your airport network. Helpful info: http://www.myps3.com.au/GuideDetail.aspx?id=35 (although the guy who wrote it doesn't have a PS3 so follow his DS instructions instead)

If you want to share some files via an external hard-drive, you will want FAT32 format. If you're planning on using the same drive to back-up using Time Machine, I'd recommend partitioning both HFS+ and FAT32 onto the same drive. I posted a link for this earlier.

If you want to share files via your network, there are several options. For YDL Linux fans, nautilus can find shared drives. HOWEVER, since most of you only care about streaming media, you have a couple of free media streaming options. If you're using Linux, you can stream by opening the file in VLC on the host computer (see http://www.engadget.com/2005/11/29/how-to-stream-almost-anything-using-vlc) and retrieving the stream using VLC on the PS3.

If you'd rather not go into Linux, another media streaming option is to create a UPnP server. For this, there's twonky, eyeconnect, or the free and legal MediaTomb via Fink. MediaTomb takes a long time to set up in Terminal (lots of UNIX know-how is good to have), and I've personally had problems sharing files with characters outside the basic latin set (even though the server claims UTF-8 support). Even DivX files are recognized, but you'll have better luck with many divx videos by booting into Linux. (see http://www.applesource.com.au/how-to/how-to-stream-media-to-a-ps3-from-a-mac/210/) Still no album art from what I can tell :-P

Oh and FYI, GameOS 2.0 broke the wireless connectivity in YellowDog Linux. Anybody running YDL will want to upgrade to a beta kernel to fix the problem: http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/support/solutions/ydl_5.x/ps3-wifi-upgrade-kernel.shtml

^^^ Thanks, that should work. My mom got the PS3 at Circuit City on BF and it was suppose to come with a free wireless controller but it only came with one so I am going to go up there to day and ask them about it. I assume this meant that it was suppose to come with two.

Can anyone confirm the status of the 40GB backwards compatibility with PS2 games? I heard that they fixed it and I also heard that the 40GB doesn't do backwards compatibility. Is this something that could be fixed down the road?

40gig model has no backwards compatibility with PS2 games. Zero.

The 80gig has software emulation of the PS2 CPU (but includes the GPU, which the 40GB does not--which is why the 40GB model doesn't do PS2 games). The software emulation has been improved with firmware patches but still isn't perfect.

it tells you on the box of the 40gb that it is NOT compatible with the ps2 games, but it is with some PS1 games.
