There is no such thing as an Ipad 3. Only 3rd generation Ipad... 12/16/2012 9:56:25 PM |

^ What does that mean? I'm confused
Here's my post from the bottom of the page

Looks like Walmart is offering the iPad 3 for $399! The announcement makes it seem like there's some confusion surrounding the offer. Anybody seen this deal in person? And would this be a good time to buy an iPad 3? Thanks! 12/16/2012 10:13:55 PM |

You can't nitpick over the number and then get the capitalization wrong.
Quote : | "What does that mean? I'm confused" |
That's because it is very confusing. Even a lot of the information posted on that page you linked to is wrong.
There is the iPad (original) Then came the iPad 2. It had cameras and a faster processor. Then came the New iPad, which is sometimes called the iPad third gen or the iPad 3. It has a retina display (higher resolution screen) and a few other smaller improvements, but basically it's an iPad 2 with a better screen. Then came the 4th gen iPad which is sometimes called the New New iPad or iPad 4 or any number of other stupid names. It has a faster processor than the 3rd gen, and a different connector.
There shouldn't be any NEW iPad 3s out there unless they are just old stock. This might possibly be Walmart's way of getting rid of old 3s that they didn't sell, if that's what this is. Or maybe they worked out a deal with Apple to get rid of what they had left over. Technically the only things that should be for sale are the older iPad2s or the newest 4th gen. Really the only way to tell the difference would be to check and see what kind of connector it has. FYI, the prices start at $499 for a 4th gen and $399 for a 2rd gen, so while $399 would be somewhat of a deal for a 3rd gen, it's not really $100 off the latest thing like that article is making it out to be.
Long story short, if you want an iPad and don't absolutely have to have the latest one, that deal is pretty good if it's for a 3rd gen. It's great if you can get a 4th gen for that.]12/16/2012 10:41:59 PM |

Alright. Someone confirm my sanity or lack thereof.
Is it the case that iPads with cellular capability used to have the ability to purchase ad hoc data usage directly from the device, on a non-recurring basis? Or am I just making up/misunderstanding that capability in my head? It might have just been with the first iPads or whatever, but I was under that assumption and Verizon is now telling me the only options they have are essentially monthly billing options (even with pre-pay).
I can clearly see it in my mind when they were talking about this as a feature, the ad hoc data use/access. Is this another case where Verizon was like "fuck that, gouge those motherfuckers for data they don't need because we can"? Or was it never the case that you could buy a specific amount of data from the iPad for one-time use only. 12/17/2012 1:38:41 PM |

verizon used to do pre-pay, buy a block of data with an expiration date for it, yes 12/17/2012 2:35:41 PM |

The Apple site still shows you being able to do month-to-month.
Quote : | " No–commitment data plans from AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint In the U.S., you can choose from data plans with no long-term contract.
Easy signup You sign up for data service right on your iPad. And you can monitor your data usage and change your plan at any time, including adding data or canceling service if you know you won’t need it. " |

It may have changed but when I had it they billed you every month until you cancelled. After canceling you could always add it back so there was no contract. I think that would still fall under recurring billing so that may be what Verizon is talking about. 12/17/2012 6:09:25 PM |

See I understood it originally to be completely a la carte. Like, OK, I need 5GB of data. And if I hit that cap, they would either pop up and sell me another ration of data, or I could decline. I swear that is how it was originally. Either way, yeah it doesn't appear to be that way any more. I guess they're saying because there's no contract it's not the same, but you have to call them to turn it on or off. It won't automatically shut off, which is what would be preferable at least as an option. 12/17/2012 6:32:49 PM |

It works the way you describe on my iPad. I signed up on the iPad, and yes it will auto renew each month but you can cancel right from the iPad as well.
I use it enough to just leave on the 2gb/mo. But for a while I just manually reupped each month. You click to manage your plan, add the one you want, then hit cancel plan to stop it from billing the next month. 12/17/2012 6:46:06 PM |

Thanks Nacho!! I went to Walmart today and they confirmed it was the iPad 3 for $399, but that they sold out of them It must be a way to get rid of unsold 3s like you said. 12/17/2012 6:57:35 PM |

Anyone know how to transfer books from ibooks on my ipad to Nook? Google search comes up with lots of answers ranging from "it can't be done" to..."this is fucking complicated".
I'm sure you guys can come up with an Idiot's Guide way to do it. 12/18/2012 8:18:47 AM |

good to know. thanks.
it's a shame it doesn't allow for a la carte purchases. they'd get more money out of me, the casual cellular userm by making that available. as it stands now, i can just tether my phone if i really need it, otherwise, im probably ok just using my phone for the most part.12/18/2012 8:42:33 AM |

So is Apple allowing Google Maps in the App Store but not letting it show up in search results? I always have to follow a link to find the app. It never shows up in a search for "Google" or "Google Maps" or anything like that.
Thought it might just be my Apple ID but was setting up my Mom's new iPad and ran in to the same thing. 12/26/2012 9:11:33 PM |

If I just start typing goog in the search, google maps is the first option.

^^^ I guess I'm not being clear. I can access through a link. I have had it on my devices since release. But I can't simply go to the App Store and find it anywhere without accessing through that link. I just found that very curious. 12/27/2012 8:04:37 AM |

Is it already in your purchased tab?
Nevermind, I just checked on my phone and even though it is in my purchased tab, I can still search for it on the app store, no problems.

^^because google maps is an iPhone app, not a universal app so it only shows up on the iPhone side of the App Store which can be accessed at the top of the iPad App Store. 12/27/2012 8:03:22 PM |

It's pretty functional as an iPhone app on the iPad regardless.

i've used ipad, ipad2 and nexus7, i love the big screen of any tablet (including the ipads) but i personally prefer the android interface, but again, what do you plan on using it for? 2/20/2013 12:30:56 AM |

I like my iPad 3 but it is large enough that I think twice about bringing with me when I leave my house. I like that the nexus is cheap though so I won't be as worried about scratching/dropping it (just cracked my iPhone 5). And I keep hearing a mini 2 (better res) will be announced in march.

Hey guys, I'm in Mexico right now and when I try to make FaceTime calls, it rings a few times then tells me "FaceTime failed." Messages are also not going through. I have a good wifi connection, and on my first day here (same location, same wifi) I was able to make 2 FaceTime calls no problem. I already tried turnin the iPad on and off, toggling FaceTime and airplane mode, etc. other than this, the Internet is working 100% fine. Any ideas what could be wrong? What can I doooooo
