What you're not seeing is that they are using logo-the-turtle commands to move the rover.
I was under the impression they had a joystick. and could move where ever.
It's also interesting to note that the 360 was created out of a 20-point turn.
The reason for the 360's are to take a panoramic pictures of mars, meaning there are more pictures like the one above available online and they are available is much higher resolution.

You also get to see a detailed look of the top of the rover in the pictures to see how it's weathered the planet so far.
