What Is It?
Essentially the http://folding.stanford.edu/ uses your unused CPU cycles to model how proteins fold in the human body. The misfolding of proteins is often involved in well known diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease. Because this endeavor requires massive amounts of computing power, their project uses spare CPU time on computers that would otherwise sit idle in homes and businesses across the world. Here at North Carolina State University, we have formed this team in order to donate our spare CPU time to help this important endeavor.

The North Carolina State University (http://ncsufolding.com) Folding@Home Team (Team # 59) was one of the first teams to join the Folding@Home project, and was the very first University-based team to join. We are currently ranked in the top 100 in the world and are ramping up production in an effort to make it into the Top 50. We are all dedicated to doing our part to help end some of these terrible diseases, and we would appreciate the company of anyone who would like to help.

All it takes is the installation of a small piece of software and your computer will start completing Work Units for the project and the team. The Folding@Home process runs at the lowest possible priority so you can run it 24X7 without slowing down your computer or interfering with your everyday computing tasks. If you have a Sony PS3 Game Console you can also run Folding@Home (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-PS3) on it with great results.

Windows Computers:
We recommend using the "text-only console” client for most windows computers. If you have a dual/quad core processor, be sure to install and run the SMP client to get you and the team far more points than the standard console client In general, its best to stay away from the graphical clients. If you have a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading, its best to turn off Hyperthreading in the BIOS if you know how. Feel free to post in this thread with any questions.

Mac and Linux Computers:
There are both "text-only" consoles and SMP clients for Linux and Macintosh computers too! If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor be sure to run the SMP client as you'll get far more points than the text-only client. But the regular console clients also help out too if you only have single-core processors.

PS3:
PS3s currently provide over 60% of the processing power in the Folding@home network and are capable of producing many points for the team. If you have PS3 system version 1.6 or later, you will see a Folding@Home icon in the Network column of the XMB (PS3 Networking menu). Just click on the icon and that's it. If you don't have 1.6 or later, perform a system upgrade. Make sure to use Team #59!

everyone with a Q6600 (if possible) should be running two instances of the Linux x64 SMP client, you are possible of getting 4,000ppd

two VM's:
a) VM of x64 linux w/ SMP client set to affinity core 1&2
b) VM of x64 linux w/ SMP client set to affinity core 3&4

so i tried to get my boss to set up all the machines at work with F@H but I had a hard time convincing him to let them join the NCSU team since he went to Wake LOL. So we might start our own team but we might go with SETI@H so I would keep my PS3 folding for you guys. And I went to App so you're lucky I joined up in the first place ha ha.

turned off the firewall and it still didnt upload...i read on a few sites that said it took a few days but like 4 days sounds excessive...maybe its all this bad karma i've earned over the years =/

Why on earth would you join SETI@H? That's the most worthless garbage in the history of the world.

With FAH at least you can say you're making a donation to the benefit of humanity without doing more than spending a few extra dollars on your electricity bill. But SETI ... seriously.

^^ Not really. My department reconfigured a lot of the machines I was folding on to require an admin password to boot from CD. Thus, I haven't found a lot of seldom used under protected machines worth folding on. Otherwise, I would plan on dropping 70K PPD, but it's not meant to be. I've also found that machines folding disklessly that were booted from my gorilla folding CD only work reliably for 3-4 days before they require a reboot.

i dont think i can run X64 VMs because my host OS is windows vista 32 bit..but i now have 2 smp clients running under vista with the affinity changer thing so we'll see what happens

i also installed the affinity changer on a coreduo laptop running a single smp client...and i'll be installing it on a C2D laptop tomorrow so hopefully it'll boost production #s on those machines. i'll report back

early reports look good, so far FahMon is saying I'm getting 3600PPD on the Q600 box

I don't think its making a difference on the CoreDuo machine, which makes sense cause I read in some thread that it only works on C2D machines

I just started this, so after the first two work units under a single-core installation I stopped the next one and set up F@H SMP client and am now seeing 100% processor usage vs. 50% (this is a Centrino Duo processor). I'm only going to run this at night, but at least it's something.

i doubt youll finish the smp workunits in time if you just run it at night. you have 4 days to finish them, and most centrino duos (aka CoreDuo) take 2-2.5 days to finish a smp workunit running it 24X7. why not try running it 24X7? it shouldn't impact your usage of the computer

most P4s get at least 200-300 PPD in my experience...although a celeron wouldn't do as well as the average P4. i have a 3.0ghz p4 getting ~500ppd if it got the right workunits.

I had some 0x07b client-core communcations error on one of my WU's I finished yesterday, but I'm thinking thats because I shut the client down once to install a driver. However, the other SMP client submitted just fine which is weird. We'll see if they both submit today when they finish.

FAHMon was showing 3780.something PPD last night.

I have my Q6660 running under Vista though, but it is OC'd to 3.0Ghz

Temps are staying good too, under 56degC

My new rig (everything except case and optical drive) only cost me ~$700.

An I've got a Tuniq Tower 120 on my Q6600. I could probably get it to 3.6@ about 1.35VCore, but I'm happy with the performance at 3.0. Plus I'm still waiting for my AS5 to settle in and cure. That should drop my temps another 2-3degC and then I might take the OC higher.

We'll see what problems arise tonight when they complete. (Hopefully I won't have any, but I'm afraid of that damned error coming back.)

from what i've read, the Q6600 sweet spot is 3.0, while it can go higher, it seems to be the best speed/heat ratio, 56'C is good

also the 0x07b is often attributed to hardware problems, often the result of overclocking. not to say you can't overclock, but if the 0x07b keeps coming back try relaxing the overclock and see if you stop getting the error

Well, I think it was because I was stressing my Memory a little bit. I've changed the divider and I bumped the voltage up .1 V. I'm not seeing any hard faults from CPUID Hardware Monitor. So, I think that has settled out.

Also, getting my VCore down I'm sure has helped (running cooler and more stable thusly.)

FYI, i overclock, underclocked, stockclocked my CPU and STILL got the 0x7b error, the closest thing i could attribute it to was the fact that i have non-standard (non-1.8v-stock) memory that runs at 2.3v stock and at 1066mhz, but this is what the SPD is and it's a stock setting so it's not "technically" overclocked at all.... so IMHO, it's mainly associated when you have an odd cpu/memory ratio (or irregular FSB speeds) or due to non-standard voltages that don't fall within the DDR2 spec... the other suspect thing i've thought it could be is too much vdroop. but FYI, i've gotten this error on BOTH my E6600 & my brand new E8400 stock

i got back into it a few months ago...

a buddy is running for SBP and will likely win... i'm gonna have him try to find a way to make ncsu isntall F@H on the unity machines.
