They are just very different pistols, in feel, form, operation, and intent...but they're both great. It's like car guys arguing over Corvettes and 911s.
Furthermore, "1911" encompasses a rather wide range, from super-plain, rugged mil-specs (we'll call it a 5.0 Mustang), to finely-tuned, customized, stainless-steel, match-grade, tightly-toleranced, target-sight equipped, hair-triggered race guns (we'll say that these are like a mid-level Ferrari, as compared to the true match pistols that would be like your uber-exotics), and pretty much everything in between (like my Springfield stainless loaded model, with a custom trigger job and match bushing...it's a hot-rod of a pistol, ready to tear targets apart at the range, but still useful as a self-defense weapon.)
Most 1911s are of a single-stack design...they are large in footprint, but somewhat more narrow. Double-stack 1911s are available. though. They are all single-action, with both a thumb safety and a grip safety. They are well known for having great triggers--a quality, well-gunsmithed 1911 trigger is pretty much the standard for pistols (other than dedicated match pistols). Mine is reliable, but I would guess that on average, 1911s aren't quite on par with SIGs in this regard. The vast majority of 1911s are chambered for .45 ACP, although you can get them in 9mm and other calibers.
The P226 holds double the ammo, is still quite accurate, is pretty much the yardstick in terms of reliability, is stupidly idiot proof to use (and clean, for that matter), has a durable finish, etc. It's a combat pistol, built, above all else, to be a killing machine for any place, any condition, every time. It also happens to be an enjoyable pistol to shoot at the range, although in this regard, I personally don't think it can compete with a higher-end 1911. The P226 is a DA/SA design--first shot DA, subsequent shots SA. The trigger is very good for this type of pistol. There is no manual or grip safety to fumble with under pressure--just draw and squeeze the trigger (there is a decocking lever). Personally, I feel more comfortable with this than with a "cocked & locked" 1911, for carry purposes.
If you, like me, spend most of your time taking your pistol to the range, a nice 1911 is tough to beat. My thought is to get a dedicated carry pistol (compact SIG, probably, and/or maybe a tiny pocket pistol) for personal defense...and no pistol will touch a 12-gauge shotgun for home security.
If you are only going to have 1 pistol, and the emphasis is on personal defense, I would get the SIG every time.7/9/2010 12:02:35 PM |

i kinda wanna get a 1911 to carry on the boat and to take hunting in case i ever had to dispatch a deer or something. any suggestions on a no-frills, workhorse 1911? i don't care about taking it to a range other than to practice with it occasionally. i'm thinking stainless would be nice since it stands a good chance of getting wet.

Hey ya'll, looking to buy a pistol in very near future. Either...
Sig P229 DAK
Sig P250 Compact
SA XDm 3.8
Looking for 9mm. I doubt anyone who owns one of these would actually want to get rid of it but it's worth a post cause I don't wanna drop the cash for NIB at the gun shop.
Thanks 7/9/2010 9:44:42 PM |

Thinking more along the lines of a Taurus TCP or something similar.
1. Give up on having a jack-of-all-trades 1911...go ahead and make it a tweaked-out range toy. 2. Get a P229 for personal defense--glovebox duty and occasional cold-weather carry. 3. Get a true pocket pistol (like a TCP or LCP) for, well, keeping in my pocket. 7/11/2010 1:59:54 PM |

1977 Glenfield/Marlin 25N .22 S/L/LR Bolt Action. Grooved for scope, but has factory sights. Metal is in excellent shape, no rust or pitting, good gloss. Polished bolt (very smooth). 7rnd mag. One of the best triggers I have ever felt on a .22 rifle. Stock has been re-done with Minwax stain and Tru-Oil finish. A pachmeyr buttplate has been installed. The buttplate said "Remington" to begin with, but I think someone ground the plate down and now its just a normal black buttplate. Stock has holes for swivels, but no swivels.
Asking $130 FTF in the Raleigh/Youngsville area. The *only* trade I am looking for is a .22mag bolt action rifle (Marlin, Savage etc). I am looking to stay around the same value as the rifle for the .22 mag trade. 7/18/2010 2:57:29 PM |

I'm in the market for a crossbow but companies still won't ship to NC (Cabelas, Sportsmans Guide, Gander Mtn). I don't know if that will change soon but right now it looks like I'm going to have buy it in person at a store.
Dicks had one crossbow and claimed to be getting "a lot" more.
Anywhere around here yall would recommend looking? And yes I have my pistol permits 8/8/2010 9:43:53 AM |

the pistol permit thing makes no sense. you can buy any long gun you want as long as you're 18 years old and pass the background check, but you can't buy a crossbow until you're 21 and go through an annoying ordeal with the sheriff's office. makes no sense to me. shows how out of touch our lawmakers are. 8/8/2010 4:07:31 PM |
