jackstand broke once, but I wasn't under the car yet.

Never been so freaked out in my life.

Should have definitely had blocks or something under there as well, but yea

I usually try to double up on jack stands or have a hydraulic jack as secondary.

I was genuinely curious of the truck's purpose. I understand how one could question the motives behind a (let's say) "sports car" person questioning a truck, but I'm not a good example. What I own is as much of a compromise as I can make in the name of comfort and practicality at its price point and I do use every bit of it's modified performance as I know how, on a regular basis.

Understandable.

To me, it seems more people catch shit for owning a truck than for something like a Porsche/corvette/enter sports car name here

I wouldn’t own a sports car or a pick up truck if I didn’t use them for a particular purpose for which they made sense. I recognize that someone may want to own a car simply because they think it’s bad ass, or they just want to own it, and really that’s OK too. -Though, coal rolling (is that how you say it) is still not OK!

of course, it's reckless, but I don't know how that plays into the utility comparisons we've been discussing?

You know, I’m starting to think that it doesn’t. Maybe I should’ve just asked if they did anything w/that truck, but even then, what’s the point?

That does it, I’m getting a corolla.

LOL! No, I picked Corolla because that's the most "sensible" vehicle I can think of. I mean, I have opinions on a Corolla as well but I better not post them now, since we're trying to make peace and all.

If you get a car back and it's worse than when you took it in, then no. No, it's not normal.

I think maybe because it's a new tire, while the other three are old, so it takes some time for the new one to get used to the car.

observed a CEL on the Crown Vic. Bank 2 too lean. Vacuum leak? Oxygen sensor? MAF? Dirty PCV? The possibilities are nearly endless. And they all kinda suck for someone with no driveway and only street parking.

found a random dangling wire in my 240 near the alternator. It looked like it was supposed to connect to the alternator as a ground..so i decided to connect it.
took me until my battery fully died to realize my alternator was no longer working..
then it took my a while of reading online to find out that the wire that i connected should NOT be connected ..unless there is a plastic insulator in place.
it apparently blows the alternator fuse instantly (which is what happened)
new fuse and battery and everything is good again

short version: i broke my car then i fixed it

Had my Cayman's oil analyzed by Blackstone Labs. Their summary was:

Quote :
"We found slightly elevated metals in this sample from your Cayman, along with sodium. The
only metal really out of line is lead, which could be a sign of bearing wear, though 9 ppm may be a harmless particle streak. The other metals are also above average levels, and that could just be due to the longer oil run, since averages are based on ~4,400 miles of oil use. Sodium might be a sign of coolant, so if that's the case, it could be causing some wear. It may just be residual additive, though. The TBN is good at 4.9, but try a 7,000-mile oil run next time to monitor."

It's probably nothing, but the thought of a) excessive bearing wear and b) a coolant leakage on a Porsche engine makes me a bit nervous Wasn't planning to have the oil tested again but I probably will after 7k miles (as suggested) to get some followup results that should put my mind at ease. They also analyzed the health of the oil itself, and it was still fine - probably could have gone another few thousand miles.

^^After reading that it's so nice to not give a crap. But if I was driving a car with no dipstick I guess I would understand.

Congrats on paying the car off. I am car payment free as well the past few years. It's been great.

Filled up the 4runner with good ol dino 5w-30. Also replaced the fan clutch. New A/T Coopers. New carpet. Waiting on a new catalytic converter to be delivered. Should be good to go another 100k soon.

Got the 7 back from some metalwork on the hood scoop (intercooler) and a repaint. Looks much better.

...and before I even picked up it, the thoughts of selling it started creeping in to my head, haha. Me and my car ADD. I'll track it a couple times now that it's much more sorted, and then decide what I want to do with it.

Duke/others what % failure rate do you think there is, 3, 5, 10%? How much do you think that a failed engine would cost to replace, $5-7, 10k? Would purchase price of car + $10k still be worthwhile?

Well I suppose you may land on the other side of this than where I did, but these cars are pretty worthwhile. Also, there’s another way to avoid the M96 issues, get a turbo or a GT3/GT2. You’ll then own a super car though and even if they’re tough and reliable, they really do go through consumables. It’s worth it, at least that’s what I keep telling myself.

I keep seeing 10% estimates for 996 (or at least 996.1) cars, and progressively less problematic up until the '09 redesign.

I haven't done detailed repair cost research, but I assume $10k or more.

That incidence and severity combination is a non-starter for me.

I have considered a GT3 or Turbo, but have decided to wait until 997 (pre-'09) types reach a price I'm willing to pay.

Not sure why you lumped the Cayman into the 996 M96 engine problem. The chances of having an IMS failure for the Cayman is very, very very small. If it was a significant problem the Cayman would have been included in the 996/Boxster lawsuit against Porsche. After all why would the lawyers leave them out if they could have won more money? Cayman was left out because it's not a problem to worry about.

Engine replacement cost for a Cayman S is around $15k I believe.
