i just tried the dropbox app to install a .apk method that lifehacker covered today...
somebody was using their head when they thought of that haha
but the app i installed was the droid x multitouch keyboard.
i wasn't impressed and went back to stock almost immediately. i haven't felt like i needed to try swype yet - the stock one with a good screen calibration to my thumbs is giving me no problems at all. 7/22/2010 12:43:12 PM |

Do you spend a lot of time in bad signal areas? Cell phones tend to drain quickly when they don't have signal or have bad signal. at my house without much use my battery might drain 30% in a day. I've gone to my friends house with ~75% battery and 5 hours later I'm leaving with a dying battery without much if any use at all. I rarely get a bar at his house.
If you spend time in good signal areas and are still having battery issues like that after a day or two, try performing a factory reset. For whatever reason a lot of Backflips needed a factory reset straight out of the box to perform properly so motorola may have some of the same issues with the droid x?7/22/2010 12:57:22 PM |

Yep, and they are all tied to a specific county/area ... I was amused when selecting the number I wanted that the county name was the same as my last name, although I don't actually live near there. The area code/original location of the number doesn't matter to me otherwise since long distance costs are irrelevant these days (or you're getting ripped off).7/22/2010 1:20:00 PM |

I messed with Google Voice hacks for about a month or two with my TP2 and with MagiCall it was the most streamlined I think the process could possibly get. Even then, it wasn't worth it to me. There are tons of times where my GV number (most likely when CDMA roaming) would show up as UNAVAILABLE on Ensemble and therefore charge me minutes. There's a thread on PPCGeeks that Morty started with an overload of info, but for me I could never really adopt. 7/22/2010 1:45:08 PM |

Data flows over 3G using the same antennas/towers as voice data correct? Signal doesn't seem too poor at work but im waiting to see how the battery performs over the weekend.

^You're definitely on the right track with the calling card method. Basically you want to find an app for android that replaces Magicall. How many local numbers? You can add 3 from Sprint2Home and another one or two from Sprint2Office if you can find a rep that will add the latter.

^^^I don't have my android phone yet (on order) so I am not used to how they break down the power usage but is that saying you are down to 60% battery life (meaning you have used 40%) and 37% of your usage was attributed to 4 minutes of voice calls? Because the way I read that makes it look like you used ~15% of your battery on a 4 minute phone call
I'm guessing I am reading that wrong since the %'s (excluding the 60% of course) don't add up to 100% anyway.

I think you're reading it correctly and I think it must just be a crap battery since Cell standby, Display, and Idle use have stayed consistent. I will try the factory reset suggestion posted earlier when I get an opportunity.

Quote : | "Asurion No Longer Replacing DROIDs For DROIDs, Production Stopped By Motorola On 07.22.10, In News, by Kellex
We’ve heard rumors that the original Droid is nearing “end of life” status, but according to cell phone insurance machine Asurion, it’s already there. You see, we’ve received a handful of emails from frustrated readers who attempted to make claims on broken Droids, but were told that it is no longer in production by Motorola and they would have to settle for something else. (See screenshot above.) The situation is this. Droid owners are paying anywhere from $6 to $8 per month for Asurion insurance in order to protect an investment they made knowing that if something tragic were to happen, they would be covered and a replacement would be on hand. Oh let’s not forget that a steep deductible is also required when filing your claim, although better than paying full price for a new device, it is still nothing to snicker at. So what’s happening right now? Since the D1 is “no longer in production” claimees are left with 3 options that are essentially a slap to the face. Your choices are the Droid Eris, Motorola Devour or LG Ally. Yes, instead of another Droid you can have MotoBlur and Android 1.6. Lesson of the day? Be careful with those D1 devices! If you expect to file a claim to receive a replacement, it’s not happening. Yikes." |

Quote : | "Google Voice app updated, Android and BlackBerry get faster dialing by Andrew Munchbach on July 22nd, 2010 at 3:55pm Filed under: Android, Google, Software 28 Comments
Google has released an update to its Android and BlackBerry Google Voice applications, and is promising faster connection times. As Google states, “Our mantra is faster = better.” Here’s how the updated clients will expedite calls:
Until today, the Google Voice app had to make a request to the Google Voice server every time you wanted to make a call to send us the phone number you wanted to dial. Then the call would be connected via a Google Voice access number. With direct access numbers, we assign a unique phone number to every person you call. This means that we no longer need to use your data network to access the server each time you make a call, so calls will be placed much faster.
We’ve got the rest of the press release queued up for you after the bounce. We’re curious, how many of you give out your Google Voice number exclusively?" | ]7/22/2010 6:09:09 PM |

they might be built into the UI, if so a lot of times they auto-launch.
if that's the case know two things: you'd need root or a custom rom to remove them, and they more than likely aren't effecting your performance in the meantime.
Quote : | "Despite the fact that the Droid X has been suffering from screen issues, Verizon has stated that Droid X users are swallowing up five times the data when compared to other devices. Neowin reported yesterday that Verizon was looking to bury unlimited data and this propaganda is only reinforcing the claims that Verizon will unveil the new plans soon.
According to paidcontent.org, Verizon stated “On Droid X, we’re seeing something like 5x the data usage of any other device” what Verizon fails to say is that this is could be tied to it being a new device. Like any other new toy, the owner tends to play with it a lot at first and dissipate use in the following months; but it’s more likely that Verizon will use this slanted information to introduce its data tiers in the near future.
While Verizon continues to state the obvious, its users are left wondering how long we get to keep our unlimited plans (Verizon does currently have a soft cap of 5 gigabytes per month on mobile data usage). While we don’t really know what Verizon will introduce, or how it will price its data tiers, this is one more piece of the puzzle that shows Verzion is about to take unlimited data to the way of the "Dodo"." |

Android doesn't work the same as a desktop OS. It doesn't require the user to manage memory. When you see those apps in ATK, many of them are inactive, and aren't using any CPU cycles or energy. Only the active apps are using resources (aside from memory). The reason the phone does this is to prepare things it thinks you might use ahead of time, so they'll load faster, etc. It can be pretty annoying though when it repeatedly loads the Amazon MP3 bloatware that I never use, but since I got rid of ATK and just use System Monitor Lite, my battery life has gone way up. You should check out System Monitor. It still lets you kill stuff, but it differentiates between Active, Inactive/Cached, and Internal System processes. The pay version has a history tracker that lets you see which processes are running most often and what/how much resources they're taking up.7/22/2010 11:59:23 PM |

Wait, what? You can get GV calls and not have them use minutes? I thought the only was was if you have an A-list or My5 or whatever and add the GV number to that. Tell me more! I use GV as my primary line.
As far as battery life, I get awesome results at home on Wifi. I've gone as much as 30 hr on the Evo without a charge (with 2 hr of phone, 1-2 hr of web, 2-3 hr of Grooveshark, some YT, etc). But whenever I use a full charge away from home, even in areas with a good signal, I only get 6-7 hr. That's with a bit of web usage (<15 min), a few texts, and 1-2 hr of phone. I even keep GPS turned off unless I need it.

That was posted a while back, but I was having the same issues and it took me a while to figure out. If it's on Wifi, then there's a setting that turns Wifi off automatically 15 min after the screen has locked. It's under settings->wireless->wifi settings->advanced->wi-fi sleep policy. You can change it to "never" or "never when plugged in." I leave it on "never," which doesn't work on my Evo. Turns out that some phones with Broadcom boards have an issue with this setting. There's an app in the market called "wi-fi keep alive," which fixes this.7/23/2010 12:31:07 AM |

Lately, the Exchange e-mail client (Email, or com.google.android.email) on my Droid has just been destroying my battery. I had it unplugged for about 7.5 hours yesterday, and it ran my battery down to 5%. That process alone accounted for a staggering 41% of the battery usage.
Now, I had it set to sync contacts and calendar information, and it was checking for new mail every hour. Before Friday or so, it never used that much battery. The only thing that has changed was my password. I changed my password at work, but I forgot to update the settings on my Droid. But what the hell, does it just continually hammer the Exchange server when authentication fails or what?
