That WHOLE TEAM shot around 50%.... His mid range jumper was pretty good.

It was the layups you had to worry about

TBDV will be a fine backup center and they can easily sub Warren for Howell if necessary too, they're almost the same height. Leslie and Warren are probably scarier offensively than Leslie and Howell too, based on the Spain games.

Just off the phone with Thomas Lee of Morale Entertainment, organizers of the Carrier Classic...

Lee said that they are moving to a 'tournament' format in 2013 and that it is 'very likely' that NC State will be included.

When I asked Lee if NC State was 'lobbying for' or had been sought out for a spot in 2013, he said 'a little of both'.

Either way - sure sounds like State's gonna be on a boat in 2013."

I saw Vandenburg practicing his dribble in a canoe on Lake Johnson. I'd say we're a lock for the carrier classic.

Painter wasn't even a 50% shooter overall, and he certainly wasn't 50% on that stupid mid range jumper. 42% FG% is really bad for a big man since most of his shots are point blank.

Painter may have done a lot of good things for us, but shooting was certainly not one of them.

Vandy should just worry about playing defense and rebounding. No need to do like Painter and steal shots from our good shooters and give free possessions to the opponent. Every offensive rebound needs to be followed up with either a dunk, layup, or kick out to Scott Wood.

Gott has clearly said that Vandy's role next year will be defense and rebounding. He said that Painter was often brought in and had to cover the other team's top offensive post man in order to limit foul trouble on CJL and Howell. Vandy will be expected to do the same.

I highly doubt he'll be as good in that role as Painter since he is not athletic enough to go outside the paint or stop an explosive player like a McAdoo from going right around him, but if he can use his size to alter some shots and get rebounds, he'll serve his role.

Defensively our team next year will not be anything spectacular (Brown should be a monster on the perimeter, but everyone else is meh). Hopefully our offense is just so high octane that it won't matter that we have gaps in our defense. Who is going to fill CJW's role of covering the other team's best player? Brown? Purvis?

wasn't defense one of the concerns some had about Gottfried when we hired him?

I think early on last year there were some serious defensive issues, but it was obvious adjustments were made throughout the year.

If the other defenders are able to force people to make a move to get around them, CJL showed some promise last year blocking shots around the rim when he rotated over to help out. We definitely have guys that are solid on the glass to limit offensive rebounds as well.

On the perimeter we'll have to get better at fighting through screens and Lewis will be a bit of a weakness as bigger guards will be able to just go straight over him. Brown showed a lot of potential for forcing turnovers last season to get the break going and he'll have to do that on a more regular basis this season. Purvis and Lewis will have to also have active hands out there to create deflections and steals because they are both going to see a lot of minutes.

The biggest thing we've got to see is that the team can maintain the intensity for an entire season like they did the last 5 or 6 games of last season. If they do that we have the talent to be a serious contender for the ACC and make a good push in March.

well someone like McAdoo is gonna be tough for anyone to guard, even Painter. But I think we're all expecting Vandy to get us more blocks than we did last year.

c'mon man, Purvis is gonna be great for us on defense. I think he'll be the one to eventually take CJW's role. I agree Lewis will definitely be a liability. And Wood isn't phenonemal, but he doesn't give his man anything easy. At least he'll hustle and force a difficult shot and sometimes trail the play and block the shot from behind. He does pick up cheap fouls though and gets into trouble.

There is no way you can make this assumption until we see him up against some good ACC caliber players. He's got the physical abilities to be a good defender, but often defense is about effort and technique, not just physical gifts.

I used McAdoo as an example of an explosive big man. Whatever he did or did not do to us last year is a weak argument considering he was a 6th man on that UNC team. Let's use a different example, how about Clemson's Devin Booker or Milton Jennings. Both big men that move well, Vandy is likely not going to be able to stop these players as well as Painter. That is all I was saying.

CJL can be a shot blocker for us, but he's got to stay away from picking up ticky-tack fouls so that he can be aggressive as a shot blocker.

Vandy won't be guarding those dudes...well...maybe Booker. Milton Jennings lit us the fuck up last year anyways...regardless who was guarding him.

It's not like we're going to put Vandy on athletic SFs. He'll be guarding opposing team's Centers and big PFs. In the event that he's guarding a quick dude, its more than likely that we're in bad foul trouble and he's out there just to wreck shit.

Vandy will be fine and more than serviceable next year. And hopefully he won't be shooting a ton of 18-footers.

The fact that he had multiple serviceable games (albeit, in limited minutes) toward the end of his sophomore year, and he's had a redshirt year to improve.

[Edited on September 21, 2012 at 1:09 PM. Reason : of course it's speculation, but i'm somewhat hopeful that he'll be a serviceable back-up]

I think Vandy is really gonna surprise people this year. He won't be a star, but he can really help on the defensive interior if a team is killing us inside.

We lost offense (sort of) with Painter, but we gain a ton of defense with Vandy. And with Warren, Purvis, and Lewis coming on board, offense shouldn't be a problem. Defense could be.

[Edited on September 21, 2012 at 1:48 PM. Reason : And who knows, maybe he developed some semblance of offense in his redshirt season]

good hype is great but we still haven't played a game.

vandy hasn't done anything yet, we're not sure what he's capable of. it would be great if he or tdt could step up but until they do we can't pencil them in for anything special. all we know right now is we have some studs and talented freshman, but they still have to live up to the hype together.

ITT we state one of three things: 1) obvious shit 2) speculation and 3) complaints and criticism about others speculation based on our own personal prognostications.

And occasionally some actual news.

He's gonna be DOMINANT this year.

I think Vandy has a chance to be solid for this year. The only real question marks about his game are turnovers and rebounding. He's had a lot of problems with both, so that's what I'm interested to see if he's improved. We all know he can block/alter shots and dunk.

lots of laughter about Vandy, but I saw a lot of improvement in him in the last few games he played for us. I agree that he's not a major concern for us ... big man depth IS a concern, but that's referencing what's behind Vandy in addition to the foul magnets we have starting for us.

Gottfried getting paid now.

New contract makes him the 3rd highest paid coach in the ACC in terms of guaranteed money.

http://northcarolinastate.scout.com/2/1223794.html

Quote :
"Gottfried's annual salary remains at $750,000. His supplemental compensation was increased from $450,000 to $1.2 million, which moves him from ninth to third among the 12 ACC men's basketball head coaches in annual guaranteed compensation. The term of his contract remains unchanged through April of 2018, after having been automatically extended two years by virtue of the Pack’s Sweet 16 appearance last March."
