The easiest class I ever took at State was intro to philosophy. I got at least 110 on every test we had. The professor had extra credit questions like "what is your favorite rolling stones song and why".

There were no athletes in this class.

look if he self-induces a stress attack from blatant years of cheating, and then lying about it, and then stressing out with it hanging over his head... then he dug his own grave/health concerns.

I don't see why he'd have stress. If he's complicit in the thing he probably thinks it's part of business.

He didn't wish him harm, just said he wouldn't be sad. And honestly, if you are not a fan or know him personally why would you be sad? I wasn't sad when Skip Prosser died.

I wouldn't be happy that Roy Williams died of a heart attack, but I would be pleased to know that he got what was coming to him. There, I said it.

Unfortunately, karma is about as real as luck, faith and heaven.

But it would be sad, because he's a living being who's loved by others. Remember guys, we're talking about a game.

"got what was coming to him." a heart attack. because you're mad about another team beating the one you like a bunch of times due to cheating, which had no meaningful impact on your life whatsoever. get some fucking perspective, you sorry sack of shit. jesus. the fuck reality do you live in where a severe failure of a critical organ is what someone deserves for something like this?

A key player in the story, Bobbi Owen, a faculty member and associate dean now on study leave, is emerging as a key voice. She apparently has been identified as knowing about the AFAM classes, pushing to rein them in, and yet not taking action. More critically, she had significant responsibility for contributions to the SACS accreditation process and headed the Independent Study Task Force which did not get to the bottom of the scandal. Glad to see that SACS is beginning to move on this."

This is likely unprecedented, but I would _really_ enjoy it if the SACS organization were able to conditionally revoke accreditation. Like they would lay down judgement that UNC would lose accreditation for 3 years, but that could be bypassed if it self-imposed a sacrifice of all NCAA athletics (aka not just post-season) for that same time period. It would allow actual academic students to continue on their merry way without being penalized while placing the hammer on athletics.

That would also keep the NCAA out of this because they are clearly biased as they have a lot to gain by not penalizing the university.

One can only dream, I suppose...

isn't it technically public record at this point? except for Butch Davis' cell, you're not supposed to be able to hide communication records with a public institution.

^No, they're not. It would be funny though. For the flagship university to have the same academic reputation as the University of Phoenix?

But in all seriousness, that would be pretty devastating for not just the university, but also the triangle and North Carolina as a whole. It's the reason why this should be taken seriously as a front to the integrity of the university. Losing accreditation would be unthinkable, but the threat of losing it has to be real for the governing body to retain any real authority.

So if UNC is supposed to receive notice tomorrow or Monday, when will the public be told the contents? Can the SACS reveal the ruling if UNC does not after a certain length of time?

Obviously UNC will have to reveal it at some point, however I know they are going to try and sit on this as long as possible unless it hails them as figuring out a new way to teach without teachers or classes or real assignments.

^Yup. Turns out that despite trying so hard to limit the exposure of the fraud/scandal to just AFAM... Ol bag-faced Jan Boxill was responsible for at least 160 of her own paper classes:

Quote :
"Emails show Boxill, a philosophy professor, offered 160 independent study courses between spring 2004 and spring 2012, according to records obtained by The Daily Tar Heel. "

http://www.dailytarheel.com/article/2014/11/more-evidence-emerges-on-jan-boxill

Pretty big deal as it shows that at least one other dept was heavily involved in this. I wonder what the % of athletes involved is here. Am guessing it is a little more exclusive, given that she had so much more control over this dept. UNC's public records department would not give the percentage.
=========================

Also interesting that this came out today, just one day after SACS mailed their warning letter to UNC. Obviously UNC is limiting what gets out and has probably assured SACS that it was all limited to AFAM. SACS has had the truth hidden from them at least 2 times now, will they bend over and gladly take another hot steamy UNC load in the face?

This part is, I guess, kinda noteworthy from the article:

Quote :
"Again, there is no hard proof of wrongdoing on Boxill's part here, nor any evidence that the independent study courses she oversaw were deficient.

But it's notable that investigators never probed the content of Boxill's courses, and that the Wainstein report never even mentioned that athletes were steered to her classes when they needed high grades. "

So the Wainstein investigation was basically confined to the AFAM department. They didn't investigate Boxill's courses. So while it would certainly appear that something fishy was going on with her 160 independent classes...they didn't investigate them to prove they were fraudulent or paper classes.

The best part about that article:

Quote :
"Boxill was embedded in UNC and its athletics program. A master lecturer in the philosophy department, she taught a long-standing class on sports ethics and brought in regular guest speakers like men’s basketball coach Dean Smith. As faculty chairwoman, she attended regular meetings with former Chancellor Holden Thorp’s administration. "

Oh and then this:

Quote :
"Hatchell remembers one instance of Boxill discussing the civil rights movement with players on the bus. Boxill, who grew up during the 1960s, told the players stories about Martin Luther King, Jr.
“That’s why she was so good,” Hatchell said. “She had such a connection with the athletes.” "

Quote :
"Almost all of Boxill’s emails that were released were either her talking about, or to, students. “I will do whatever I can to help you obtain your degree,” she said in one email.

In another: “Just talked with Betsy Taylor in Steele Bldg, and she said she is making you a candidate for May, and that we are correct-all you need to do to is to PHIL with an A-!! And THAT will be done!!! This so great.

One student emailed Boxill, asking why she hadn’t heard from Boxill about the independent study course in a few weeks. Another student was looking for a way to get six hours to keep his or her Pell Grant, and Boxill suggested six hours of a philosophy or African and Afro-American independent study."

Martin Luther King Jr. would be proud you dumb twat.
