Christians Face 47 Years in Prison For Reading Bible, Praying On Street
http://www.afa.net/clp/ReleaseDetail.asp?id=78
Quote : | "Tupelo, MS - After a federal appeals court denied an emergency appeal to stop prosecution of 11 Christians on Tuesday, Philadelphia Municipal Court Judge William Austin Meehan ordered four of the Christians to stand trial on three felony (criminal conspiracy, ethnic intimidation, and riot) and five misdemeanor charges. If convicted, they could face up to 47 years in prison.
The Christians were arrested on October 10 for praying, singing, and reading scripture during an annual “gay pride” event known as “Outfest” in Philadelphia.
Since the federal courts did not intervene to halt the state prosecution, the last route for the Christians would be an appeal to the Supreme Court says the Christians’ attorney Brian Fahling, senior trial attorney for the American Family Association Center for Law & Policy.
“First, symbols of Christianity are removed from the public square, now, Christians are facing years in prison because they preached the gospel in the public square. Stalin would be proud,” Fahling said.
The federal appeals court in Philadelphia denied emergency relief despite video footage Fahling calls “undisputed evidence” that shows the Christians cooperating with police and continually being harassed by the Pink Angels, a group of homosexuals organized to impede the gospel message. Philadelphia city prosecutor in the case, Charles Ehrlich, attacked the Christians as “hateful” and referred to preaching the Bible as “fighting words,” the judge agreed.
Charges were dropped against the remaining seven apparently because they were not seen quoting scripture on the videotape.
The Philadelphia case represents another example of discrimination toward Christians,” said Tim Wildmon, president of the American Family Association national headquarters. “The past month has poured forth cases of Christian persecution seen in the higher education institution, public school systems, and the judicial court system.”" |

Homeland Security Surveillance Cameras Hit Baltimore

Quote : | "Coming soon to Howard County: 24-hour video surveillance cameras in public places, monitored by the county police.
Perhaps as early as next year, Howard County will join a closed-circuit video security network that will extend throughout much of the Baltimore region.
The expansive regional system, which advocates tout as a homeland security effort, is similar to systems being set up elsewhere in the country. The system is funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
But privacy advocates say the permanent, 24-hour systems are costly and ineffective at fighting terrorism or crime. Moreover, critics of the system say, the cameras raise serious privacy rights questions.
"There's a real big brother aspect to it," said Stacey Mink, development director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland. "There's something creepy about being looked at all the time."" |

NEWARK, N.J. -- A man charged with temporarily blinding the pilot and co-pilot of an airplane with a laser beam claims he was simply using the device to look at stars with his 7-year-old daughter. Federal authorities on Tuesday used the Patriot Act to charge David Banach, 38, with interfering with the operator of a mass transportation vehicle and making false statements to the FBI. He is the first person arrested after a recent rash of reports around the nation of lasers being beamed at airplanes. If convicted, Banach could be sentenced to 25 years in prison and fined $500,000. US Declares Iraqis Must Destroy Their Own Seeds http://www.rense.com/general62/seeds.htm
Quote : | ""As part of sweeping "economic restructuring" implemented by the Bush Administration in Iraq, Iraqi farmers will no longer be permitted to save their seeds, which include seeds the Iraqis themselves have developed over hundreds of years. Instead, they will be forced to buy seeds from US corporations. That is because in recent years, transnational corporations have patented and now own many seed varieties originated or developed by indigenous peoples. In a short time, Iraq will be living under the new American credo: Pay Monsanto, or starve ." "The American Administrator of the Iraqi CPA (Coalition Provisional Authority) government, Paul Bremer, updated Iraq's intellectual property law to 'meet current internationally-recognized standards of protection'. The updated law makes saving seeds for next year's harvest, practiced by 97% of Iraqi farmers in 2002, and is the standard farming practice for thousands of years across human civilizations, to be now illegal.. Instead, farmers will have to obtain a yearly license for genetically modified (GM) seeds from American corporations. These GM seeds have typically been modified from seeds developed over thousands of generations by indigenous farmers like the Iraqis, and shared freely like agricultural 'open source.'" " |

If you're making your way around Los Angeles -- or any metropolitan area in America these days -- there's a good chance your movements are being recorded by a surveillance camera.
Once limited mostly to banks and convenience stores, the beady eye of the surveillance camera has appeared nearly everywhere over the past decade. Cheaper surveillance systems and heightened fears of terrorist attacks have created a world that is increasingly captured on camera.
"If you're outside doing anything, you're being recorded 50 percent of the time," said Paul Ramos, vice president of sales and marketing for Fairfax Electronics, a Los Angeles company that sells security systems.

The UK lacks our written constitution and highly litigious society, thus surveillance cameras are much much more common there, although almost all of them are for security or traffic purposes.
However, who the hell cares? How many of those are traffic cameras? How many are at ATM machines? How many are at convenient stores? Are all of those connected to a direct line to Area 51?

SO FUCKING WHAT? ITS A PUBLIC RESTROOM.
Quote : | "All of this makes good sense. A public restroom is not a permanent abode into which a customer can simply enter and stay indefinitely." |
If you read the article it states that a man and a prostitute were having sex in the bathroom at a convenience store. The police picked the lock to find the couple naked and possessing crack. Should they have gotten a search warrant before entering the public restroom? Did the neocons set this up so that they could slowly encroach upon our fourth amendment right? Did you just start this thread so that you would have a forum for posting every link to every stupid story relating to civil liberties?
Here's the shocking news!!! This story is pointless! It has nothing to do with a police state coming to America! Some tumbleweed hick in Cedar Rapids Iowa picked up a whore, took her to a convenience store bathroom and smoked crack with her. He was subsequently arrested for it and he tried to beat the rap by calling it a violation of the fourth amendment. The judge saw that it was bullshit and sent him to jail anyway. There is no deeper story here. This is not a plot by the Jews to take away your civil liberties.
Moral of the story: Don't lock yourself in a convenience store bathroom with a whore and smoke crack.

The new system, dubbed the Homeland Security Grid, will include "a significant increase in the quantity" of surveillance cameras pointed at public spaces across the city, said Ron Huberman, executive director of the Office of Emergency Management and Communications.

Student Arrested For Writing Zombie Fiction Story That Contained "Terrorist Threats" http://www.lex18.com/global/story.asp?s=2989614&ClientType=Printable
Quote : | "A George Rogers Clark High School junior arrested Tuesday for making terrorist threats told LEX 18 News Thursday that the "writings" that got him arrested are being taken out of context.
Winchester police say William Poole, 18, was taken into custody Tuesday morning. Investigators say they discovered materials at Poole's home that outline possible acts of violence aimed at students, teachers, and police.
Poole told LEX 18 that the whole incident is a big misunderstanding. He claims that what his grandparents found in his journal and turned into police was a short story he wrote for English class.
"My story is based on fiction," said Poole, who faces a second-degree felony terrorist threatening charge. "It's a fake story. I made it up. I've been working on one of my short stories, (and) the short story they found was about zombies. Yes, it did say a high school. It was about a high school over ran by zombies."
Even so, police say the nature of the story makes it a felony. "Anytime you make any threat or possess matter involving a school or function it's a felony in the state of Kentucky," said Winchester Police detective Steven Caudill.
Poole disputes that he was threatening anyone.
"It didn't mention nobody who lives in Clark County, didn't mention (George Rogers Clark High School), didn't mention no principal or cops, nothing," said Poole. "Half the people at high school know me. They know I'm not that stupid, that crazy."
On Thursday, a judge raised Poole's bond from one to five thousand dollars after prosecutors requested it, citing the seriousness of the charge.
Poole is being held at the Clark County Detention Center. " |

Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales yesterday called on Congress to renew the USA Patriot Act, saying the threat from international terrorism -- including the al Qaeda network -- was "still very real" despite U.S. successes in capturing and killing global terrorists.

"The top priority of the United States government remains protecting our citizens from an unfamiliar type of enemy, one that does not share our values, or cherish life, or respect the rule of law," he said. "This foe is quite willing to pursue the mass murder of innocent Americans and the destruction of our way of life in order to achieve their goals.
"For this reason, they must be defeated. Without security, there can be no real freedom, and we cannot relent in fulfilling this most basic obligation of government," he told members of the conservative think tank based on the campus of Stanford University. " |
