I'm of the opinion that there's more to Snape than we saw in this book. Rowling deliberately let us see the dark side of Severus to cast doubts on his loyalties. Dumbledore's death scene could be interpreted many different ways, and the way I chose to see it was as Dumbledore sacrificing himself for the good of the order - Snape would have died if Dumbledore had not, because of the Unbreakable Vow, and in my opinion Dumbledore was already dying from the problem with his hand and the potion he just drank. He spent the whole book preparing for the moment when he would have to make his sacrifice by giving Harry all the information that he would need to stand on his own two feet and fight alone just like he knew he will have to do in the end.
Honestly, I just want to believe that Snape is still working as a double agent loyal to the light side because for Harry to have been right about him being "evil" all along is just mediocre treatment of one of the most complex characters in the series. 7/18/2005 4:59:51 PM |

I haven't even read any of the books, but judging from the movies and other things I'd have to agree with you guys. Snape just seems too "obviously" evil to actually be evil, like he's really just a red herring of sorts. We're suppose to think that his allegiance sides with Voldemort, when in fact he's been on Dumbledore's, and Harry's, side all along.

I don't think Snape is evil. I think when Dumbledore was pleading with him he was actually begging Snape to kill him (like urging him to not back out now, and finish their agreement).
I agree that when Harry and Dumbledore went back to the castle, Dumbledore already knew what had to happen. He probably already had it scripted out like a play and he NEEDED Snape there to kill him (for some reason we will learn later).
I think Snape is going to play a big part in the final novel. 7/19/2005 2:20:22 AM |

heres a question, why was snape's face filled with 'hatred' when he was looking at dumbledore? was it that he hated what he had to do? or that he truly hated dumbledore?

Snape was probably summoning up the hatred required to work the killing curse. Remember in OotP that Bellatrix tell us that hatred and evil feelings are required to work the unforgivable curses.7/19/2005 10:10:17 AM |

Psh, so what Dumbledore's dead, just talk to his portrait in the Headmaster/mistress' office, I mean duh.
I think Snape's still walking the good/evil double agent fence. I don't see how he could have been on Dumbledore's side and made the Unbreakable Vow to kill Dumbledore if Malfoy couldn't do it. I suppose you can argue that Dumbledore was slowly dying already and had planned for Snape to end it like this. Dumbledore is the sort to do all in his power to die in a well organized way, giving Harry all the info he needs first, but I'm saying that I don't entirely buy it. Which came first, Dumbledore's blackened hand or Snape's pledging the Unbreakable Vow? 7/19/2005 6:09:30 PM |

I've only half read the above comments - but I haven't seen where any mentioned my theory - so I'll throw it out there.
I think that Dumbledore was incorrected in his assumption of what the objects are that are containing Voldermort's soul. I think that when he attacked Harry's parents he had not yet put his soul in the last object (don't remember the name and I don't have the book in front of me). I think he killed Harry's mom and attempted to kill Harry - but was unable to and was badly weakened. He knew that he had to get the last part of his soul put somewhere and he put it into Harry. That would explain why they are so greatly linked, why Harry sometimes knows what Voldermort is doing/thinking, and most importantly it explains why the prophecy says that neither can fully live while the other is alive.
Quote : | "The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches. born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies . and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not . and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives . the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies ." |
I am probably totally wrong - but like I said, I'm throwing it out there.7/19/2005 8:28:17 PM |

I know someone mentioned that Regulus couldn't have done it on his own. I think the second person could have been Kreacher. Ok, the day after the Harry POtter and the Half-Blood Prince came out, there was a home video made. It was a guy with his video camera, and driving past the Barnes and Noble in Dallas Texas while screaming the ending of the Book. This video is freakin AWESOME, I'm trying to find it again, and I can't, and I gave up and decided to post something so people can help me find it. If you can, please, IM me, or post it. It's hilarious. And after that video, they put the women's voice screaming, "AHHHH..You Bitch! You Bitch!" (because she found out the ending while standing in the line) and the guy's voice in a scene with Darth Vader and Luke...it's funny...I hope someone can find it...
Thanks! 7/20/2005 3:54:52 AM |

!!DONT READ THIS POST IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE BOOK!!
When the Phoenix started to sing, it was so well-described... A couple tears leaked out of me unexpectedly... I still have hope for Snape being good. Notice that when Dumbledore was pleading right before Snape Avada Kedavra-ed him, he didn't say, "Severus... please don't kill me..." or even just "Severus... please don't..." He only said "Severus... please." Maybe that means please DO kill me so that certain information can't fall into the wrong hands, or DO kill me because I won't survive anyways, or DO kill me because it is essential to Harry's victory and Vold's demise... I think Snape is still loyal to Dumbledore and the Good Guys - but he proved to the Bad Guys that he was utterly loyal to them, thus gaining their complete trust - he has become the ultimate two-faced insider mole. He did the Unbreakable Vow with Narcissa via Bellatrix UNDER DUMBLEDORE'S ORDERS (as he told Draco when they spoke during Slughorn's Christmas party while Harry was spying under the invisibility cloak), meaning that when the time came for Draco to kill Dumbledore (which was Lord Vold's order for him to carry out) and couldn't, that SNAPE HAD TO, AND SNAPE WAS ACTING UNDER DUMBLEDORE'S ORDERS!
Meaning, it was ESSENTIAL for Dumbledore to die!
I also believe that Draco Malfoy will be redeemed with Snape, and bring his family up from the dirt of society - maybe everybody but his dad, who is just a bad apple through and through. At least his mom, Narcissa, unlike her sister Bellatrix, seems to have a couple of redeeming qualities, such as the ability to trust, and the ability to tolerate and love Draco. I actually felt sorry for Draco in this book for the first time in the whole series.
In addition, when Dumbledore visits the Dursleys and told them that it was a shame that they had treated their son Dudley so horribly and abused him, and they were confused because they had obviously spoiled him rotten and favored him above all other things in their lives... Get this - I believe that... DUDLEY WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A WIZARD!!! MUHAHAHAHAHAH! Only his parents had squashed all of the magic out of him!
And, I'm so glad Harry hooked up with Ginny... It is a real and obvious reflection of his parents' relationship. Harry looks like his dad, and Ginny looks like Harry's mom with her long red hair. I think that eventually, Ginny and Harry will get married. Hey, even their names are similar, with double consonants in the middle, and a y at the end. Ginny is so fiery and loyal and not like all of the other simpering girls at Hogwarts - and a quidditch player too - it was my hope that they would finally realize how much they'd get along. Also, Fleur redeemed herself by still loving Bill despite his disfigurement. I like her much more after this, and I can't wait to read about their wedding.
Best books series ever, dog.

Yeah, probably. Dumbledore went out Obi-Wan style (especially the picture thing is true). In fact, this book totally sets up the Star Wars ending. Dumbledore continues to guide Harry from beyond the grave. Snape becomes Voldemort's most trusted servant, then betrays the Dark Lord in the final battle with Potter (while Ron destroys the Death Star II or some shit). I'll laugh my ass off if that's what actually happens...

I would seriously doubt Harry being a Horcrux because that means that Voldemort would have to kill part of himself in order to kill Harry. I cannot think that Voldemort would go to that much trouble to ensure that he will be immortal just to have to kill one of those parts in order to get rid of Harry. 7/21/2005 11:48:20 PM |

It's a spoiler.
Actually, it's the opposite ! Tupperware for the soul.
But you can't get it from a sales representative.
You have to like, totally murder someone.
And then you can put a piece of your soul in the horcruxtupperware.
And until some meddling kids destroy them, you're essentially invincible.
On that note, doesn't anyone think it'd be a stupid idea to store your soul in any way on the person you've been prophecied to kill? If I were Voldemort I'd've put my soul in the carpet or something. But not my arch nemesis whose existence challenges the very essence of my being.
