I know what ya mean. Being caught in a squall offshore is not fun in any boat......much less a CC. I hate being the tallest object around with a shitload of lightning rods sticking up in the air. Have you ever heard the rods start to "buzz" when a nasty storm is near? 7/29/2005 3:08:15 PM |

Yeah, a few times. Last time, I was fishing with George Beckwith off Brant Island Shoals in the middle of the Pamlico Sound... during Hurricane Alex last year.

dgm: We canned our planned trip to the outer banks due to no wind and shitty rainy weather. I can deal with rain as long as its blowing. But hell if I'm gonna drive out to the outerbanks to sit in the middle of the ocean in the rain and not go anywhere.
No blow no go
As for my lightning story, 59' carbon fiber mast in the middle of a squal coming over cherry point. We go to take in sail, and as I reach up to the luff bolt rope to start tugging down, I get a nasty nasty shock. It was more than likely static buildup from the wind blowing across the highly conductive carbon fiber stick, but it still made my hand and arm clinch up for a good 10 minutes.

Was that on the Cotton Picker Tad?
Had a nasty squall this weekend. Winds shot up from 10-40 Had we not taken down the spinnaker right before (all while doing a "power reach" haha (we got lots of comments about "how the hell did ya'll fly the kite at that angle??")) . Then 2 head sail changes in the middle of it. What fun me on foredeck

This thread makes me happy. Holy hell I saw some sick boats this weekend, power and sail...to bad I forgot my camera. lolllll
One of the guys at our marina had the most gorgeous little 18 or 19 foot CC. Turns out they built it themselves. His son works at Shearline and helped on the boat. Beautiful boat for sure, but for a boat that size, I think I'd rather just snap up a decent production boat for $25K than spend a year and half building one. lollll 7/31/2005 6:28:23 PM |

I didn't fish in the tourney. Pretty much just worked on the skiff and helped a buddy get the fuel tank out of his sailboat. I did manage to go snag a few puppy drum yesterday though.
The tourney was kinda slow. There were only 9 tarpon caught yesterday. Don't know about today cause I didn't feel like waiting around for them to tally up today's catches. My other crew was in the fish both days and couldn't buy a bite. They had one knockdown that was almost surely a tarpon, but it didn't jump before coming unbuttoned...therefore, twas not a scoring fish. Oh well. Land Support Party Patrol did well.
Weather was kinda snotty down there today. lol 7/31/2005 6:45:44 PM |

maugan: that sucks, but i know what you mean. I was down in wilmington this weekend and it was the lightning acc's and they had to wait until 3 to get the first race in, because of weather. they got 5 in by the end of the regatta though, so that's good.
36 boats, good turnout. Anyone coming to SAYRA this upcoming weekend? 8/1/2005 5:46:50 PM |

If you are going to be doing some offshore light tackle, a deep vee might not be suitable. A ture deep V like an Albe or Carolina Classic type boat will rock like a cradle at rest. Not very good when you are casting and trying to keep you balance. Now, the ride in it will be awesome. Look for a hull with a modified V or variable deadrise. It is a nice middle ground and will be a stable fishing platform, but of course you will sacrifice a little ride. 8/3/2005 1:29:37 PM |

I figured it would be rough in the chop, but would be ok on a decent day it would be good in the flats, I think the hull design is interesting though... still has some flare to it he fished one all weekend and said it was a really dry boat my friend can get them for ~21 new 8/3/2005 6:52:40 PM |
