You don't need a really expensive gaming PC to make it perform beautifully...
My computer + video card cost less than $1k (back during the summer), and it runs perfectly. 3/28/2006 2:00:04 PM |

Yeah, investing in a PC vs. a console really depends on the user.
For me, it's completely worth the money because of the variety of things I do with my PC (video capture, music recording, games, coding, etc., etc.). I don't mind at all dropping $1k on a PC that I think will last. I mean, I spent $1500 on my last one back before my senior year of high school, and I used it for the next six years with the only upgrade being some extra RAM.
On the other hand, I refuse to drop $4-500 on a console because I just don't think it's worth it for the number of console games I play. I didn't buy a PS2 or a Gamecube until they dropped in price ($150 and $100, respectively, I think).3/28/2006 2:14:16 PM |

This game looks rediculous!!! Does anyone know the frame rate or how well it will run with a Radeon 9800XT, ATHLON 64 3000+, and a gig of ram? Just wondering, defin had fun playing the 3rd, now that this is finally out, its kind of exciting. 3/28/2006 2:53:02 PM |

You do realize you can buy lockpicks right? I picked up 100 from the theives' guild fence in Bruma for like 300 gold and that's lasted me for quite some time. Also, you could just create a character with alteration (I think) and get unlock spells instead. RTFM.3/28/2006 4:13:26 PM |

Do you have to be a member of the theves guild to buy them? Cause, damn I sure could use some. 3/28/2006 4:48:36 PM |

There's a guy outside the walls of the Imperial City that will sell lockpicks to anyone.
Other than that, yeah, they pretty much come only from the Thieves Guild (except for the occasional ones you can pick up). 3/28/2006 5:00:06 PM |

Instead of travelling to get them from the thieves guild dude, i just did player.additem A 100 and then did player.additem F -500 for deducting 500 gold from my stash.
I refuse to cheat playing the game, but did it for convenience that time. 3/28/2006 5:22:35 PM |

my computer cost less than $500, and it's playing oblivion without any problem whatsoever...granted, i'm at 800x600 instead of what i'd like to be at, but eh...runs smoothly, short loading times, haven't had it crash yet 3/28/2006 5:54:48 PM |
cyrion All American 27139 Posts user info edit post |
the second oblivion gate i went into was a little longer than i expected. ran out of arrows right as i got to the tower...how dissapointing. either way i had nothing to lose so i ran like a bitch. dinosaurs, daedra...i stop for no man. hilariously enough i made it to the top and closed the portal without kiling anyone in the actual tower. made it out at 5:30am, jsut enough time to fast travel away and not die in the sunlight. 3/28/2006 6:04:22 PM |

Well, I had my first crash today. Luckily there was an autosave from about 30 seconds before. Nice feature (and vital to a Bethesda game). 3/28/2006 8:33:33 PM |

^ yeah, this game has actually been really stable, but anything that has this many shaders and shit and taxes a system so heavily (bethesda made or not) should be designed so crashes aren't game killers. 3/28/2006 8:43:59 PM |
DaveOT All American 11945 Posts user info edit post |
Honestly, I have to admit I'm shocked at how stable it has been.
Daggerfall was probably the buggiest game I've ever played, and even after the final patch came out it was still very easy to fuck yourself over and end up somewhere where you couldn't move/recover.
I heard the initial Morrowind release was pretty bad too, but I didn't get it until much later when it was pretty much fixed. 3/28/2006 8:53:01 PM |
cyrion All American 27139 Posts user info edit post |
morrowind wasnt that bad for me, couple really bad things but mostly fine.
i've clipped into a wall where i almost couldnt get out (magically got myself out after few mins of flipping out) and crashed once. nothing major though. 3/28/2006 9:02:03 PM |

the best thing about when I got stuck in Morrowind was that I could just go to the construction set and move whatever was keeping me stuck. Worked like a charm. 3/28/2006 9:57:02 PM |
Charybdisjim All American 5486 Posts user info edit post |
Speaking of getting stuck...
after leaving the hunters run dungeon I seem to be stuck in what appears to be cutscene mode. Worse still, I quick saved right after leaving because I knew there'd be a big fight. Even worse still, the autosave kicked in right after my quicksave. Loading from any of the saves I've used in the last 4 days (yeah, just those two, silly I know) means loading to me unable to move.
I can crouch, turn, look around, zoom out, and bring up the menu by hitting escape. I can't access inventory, move, attack, jump, etc. There is no world interaction. Anyone know of a console code that would kick me out of this? I've tried teleporting to various places and I'm still stuck when I do. 3/28/2006 10:30:08 PM |

in the console (~ button) type in "tcl" which toggles no clipping mode. you should be able to get out from wherever, then type in tcl again when you are on safer ground. 3/29/2006 5:18:46 AM |

Meh, I got 20k gold in my pocket from doing random quests, stealing a lot and selling it. Funny easiest way to make money is to pick up every piece of food in the game, make restore fatigue potions (like 50+ at a time) and sell to any merchant in the game. every batch of 50 potions you make, you gain atleast 1 or 2 skill and with them selling around 20 a piece, you'll make atleast 600-1000 gold.
Doing random side quests and raiding various caves, you'll also find magic staffs and other expensive equipment. I think the only downside to the game is that if you level up in the game and do side missions, the main quests will become increasing difficult. I guess you can counter-act that by not leveling up, or whatever you want to increase your skill and make them a minor skill. 3/29/2006 10:23:11 AM |

I would say the best way I've found to get money is just walk out into the wilderness until you find a random dungeon or temple. I did that last night and ended up coming out with 4 stones valued at 1000, 15 stones valued at 50, and several weapons and armor pieces valued at 500+. I ended up pulling in just over 6000 gold from that one dungeon. Of course that may be the exception rather than the rule. 3/29/2006 12:10:49 PM |

Actually that might not be such a bad way to play for a while. All the enemies scale in hardness to whatever level you're at so in essence you'll be fighting level 1 enemies with level 8 weapons and experience. 3/29/2006 2:35:15 PM |
pigkilla All American 2332 Posts user info edit post |
i heard the enemies level up with you... after all how fair would if be if you were level 50 and had level 1 enemies? i dunno if it is true tho, but it sounds reasonable. 3/29/2006 2:39:23 PM |

When I'm wandering around in the woods now, I don't run into wolves...I run into minotaurs.
Plus the bandits/marauders carry glass, elven, and dwarven armor/weapons now. 3/29/2006 3:02:09 PM |
