Another track, “Can’t Stop Partying,” paired Cuomo with producer Jermaine Dupri and rapper Lil Wayne. To Weezer fans disinclined toward commercial pop, the whole album seems like some kind of cruel joke, but it’s not. This is the music that genuinely makes Cuomo most excited right now. “The radio station that I listen to out here in L.A. is KIIS-FM, a pop station, and it’s constantly blowing my mind with amazing sounds and productions,” Cuomo explains. “With the development of music recording technology and processing, there are so many crazy new sounds now, and those sounds of course influence new compositions. I’m constantly hearing things I’ve never even imagined before.” Cuomo says he knew that adopting these pop sounds would make him a minority in the rock scene, though he never intended Raditude to land like a grenade. “I didn’t expect that it was going to cause as much of an uproar as it has in the rock music press, but I’m willing to stick up for Weezer and Raditude and explain our position,” he says. “I really think there is a lot of artistic value in what we’re doing, even though it may at first seem overly simplistic. “I just love the record so much,” he adds. “Whenever we go to do these in-store signings and they’re playing the record in the background I’m still just blown away by it. I just feel that, in this situation, Weezer is right and the critics are wrong. I’m sorry.” To Cuomo, the themes on Raditude—young romance, independence, partying—are part of a pop tradition that dates back to The Beatles and the Beach Boys. The album’s nods to rap culture aren’t new territory for Weezer, either. Cuomo has been proudly parroting hip-hop slang since Weezer’s 1994 self-titled debut. Even the sacred Pinkerton made room for a couple clumsy raps on “El Scorcho.” “From the very beginning of Weezer, we thought of ourselves as a pop band, and we totally stuck out in the L.A. grunge scene, where a lot of people looked down on us for being a pop band,” Cuomo says. “That’s just where our taste was at, and that’s where it’s always been at. It’s always felt to me that it’s actually rebellious to be a fan of pop music.” Cuomo says he’s carefully considering the response to Raditude, and hopes to integrate some of the feedback into future songs, which he suggests may mark a return to more personal songwriting. He maintains, however, that there’s no pleasing critics who dismissed the album simply out of a fundamental bias against pop. “There’s a certain crowd out there that wants to listen to a kind of music that can’t be widely appreciated, and they want to feel elite,” Cuomo posits. “I’ve never felt that way about music. Music is about reaching out to people and communicating to people and not feeling better than other people. It’s about looking for common ground. So if you’re looking to feel artistically or intellectually superior to others, then you probably can’t be a Weezer fan.”"

And mentioning Raditude as somehow being of a piece with the Beatles' early work is a poor comparison, because he is reading the simplicity of those early Beatles songs entirely out of context. They were simple, yeah, but they were also doing something that had never been done before. What's so new about hiring a big name producer to drop a few of his less spectacular beats for you? Even Paris Hilton can do that. (And honestly, speaking of delightful, throwaway pop, I would way rather listen to Paris Hilton's album than Raditude. And that's not a dis.) Finally, it's worth mentioning that Weezer's downward trajectory has only been made more painful for former fans by Cuomo & co.'s weird, bad marketing decisions of late. Maybe Cuomo thinks he's being ironic by cross-marketing his new album with the Snuggie, but honestly, what does it say about his faith in the quality of his work when it comes as a free gift with a mail-order sleeve-blanket? Maybe people would feel differently if the Snuggie came free with the purchase of a Weezer album instead of the other way around. ...Hm. Then again, maybe not."

Somehow Rivers' wife was uninjured, but Sarah sustained 2 fractured ribs and a fractured lower vertebrae. The baby daughter was in her crib unit and was fine, as was the nanny who was sleeping near the floor in her bunk at the time. However in the back lounge, Rivers was tossed around violently, waking up as he landed back on his mattress. He recalled not hitting anything, but later we learned that he must have, as he cracked 3 ribs and sustained some mostly minor but very painful internal damage, as well as hurting his lower leg somehow. The interior of the bus was a chaotic mess with broken glass, smashed glasses and plates, food and clothing items strewn everywhere, as well as the refrigerator flying off the wall and many drawers coming right out of their slots, spewing their contents everywhere. On top of it the sliding interior doors were fused shut and the bus's electronics were ruined, so no one could get into the back lounge where Rivers lay immobile and unable to speak due to the pain in his ribcage. To top it off, the front door was jammed shut with 5 feet of heavy wet mud up pressed against it so there was no way to leave the bus. Finally, using the jaws of life to remove a rear window bar, the local EMTs and firefighters got a ladder across the ravine to the rear bus window, where they could get to Rivers, eventually getting him and Sarah out on stretchers and into an ambulance. Meanwhile they dug frantically in the mud at the front of the bus, clearing the front door so everyone else could come out. To access the rest of the bus from Rivers' lounge, the fused sliding door was destroyed by the firefighters. The other buses pulled up within 20 minutes of the accident, and already a long line of firetrucks and EMT vehicles were on the scene. I threw on my shoes and walked up just as the jaws of life were being turned on, catching a glimpse of Rivers lying inside on his back surrounded by EMTs. I couldnt believe what was happening in front of me, as Rivers lay so helpless, shivering in the center of the chaos, and meanwhile the sun was coming up and revealing an utterly beautiful light covering of snow on the surrounding trees. I dont know how to describe the wave of awfulness that gripped me as I watched, but adrenalin took over and the next thing I knew I was in the passenger seat of an ambulance transporting Rivers and Sarah to the hospital in Amsterdam, NY, about 10 miles from there. That adrenalin would sustain me all day, as everyone's did, from family to band to crew - everyone pitched in to help however they could all day as things unfolded. Fast forward to now - Sarah was discharged, a 3-4 week period of extreme pain awaiting her as she heals from her injuries the only way possible, with time and gritted teeth. Rivers was transported to a larger area hospital where he remains under observation. He is resting about as comfortably as could be expected now, and we were relieved to hear that surgery is unlikely. Hopefully tomorrow the docs will have more info. You don't fool around with internal injury. Whatever happens, we forsee some gritted teeth in his future too. We are sorry to say that the rest of the December Raditude Tour has been cancelled - when we can reschedule the dates we will, of course. I have no ticket or refund or whatever info at this time, but stay tuned to this site and the ticketing websites for more info. For now its a waiting game for all of us. Thanks for your kind thoughts and good wishes, we need them!"

I can pretty firmly say that I have just spent the last money I will ever spend on a Weezer record.

I wish that the Pinkerton LP options included a two-LP set that only had the studio b-sides, but you have to take what you can get. I will say that the 4-LP box is packaged immaculately, and kudos to them for making a really cool gatefold package instead of going for the easy way out with a disc box.

I listened to it tonight for the first time in a few years. Holds up OK, I think. Something I'd have a hard time getting into now, but something I listened to endlessly when I was 16. Sort of a neat low-rent concept album aspect to it too. Nothing in the vein of getting high and fucking cadets in your space pod, but cool when you're in high school, I guess.

oh I definitely don't hate it and it has some great pop songs, but I played Battlescars recently when I DJ'd and the lyrics made me cringe. I had forgotten about them.
