well an update on my truck. call automotive solutions this morning (the place that rebuilt the tranny, replaced the flywheel and the torque converter for $3000 a year ago ) and they still haven't looked at my truck. i said thank you and hung up. i go up there and bout to raise hell. as i get there they have it on the lift, and some spick is pulling the tranny pan off the car. looks at the fluid, says it's burnt and says there are shavings in there. i look at it, it is burnt but there ain't no fucking shavings in there. he recommends a new transmission. i'm like OK you guys rebuilt it a year ago, how much will it cost this time. he goes: $2200, i say FUCK YOU you just got 3 grand for this thing a year ago, you expect me to come here yearly and give you a couple of grand just for good looks? fuck you.
call AAA for a tow truck, taking it to another shop. AAA calls automotive solutions and they say the car can't be towed until i pay $80 diagnostic fee. i'm like WTF, this fuckshit just unscrewed a couple of bolts, well whatever. they have a 1 year/12,000 mile warranty. which did me no good. and the tranny was never right since the place rebuilt it. so i got it towed to Transmedic, which has worked on 2 of my bosses cars and they run like magic (both tranny's replaced). $1800 flat fee. 3 year/36,000 mile warranty.

so i'm gonna take the bitch off road as soon as i get it, and the best thing, the shop said they dont mind, and if it blows up bring it back!!!

and as for automotive solutions, i told transmedics to look for anything that could possibly have not been done right the first time and if there's anything, we're going to court.

i saw some guys in an olive drab f350 with car trailer eyeballing an older J-truck on sierra the other day, same house has a waggy. also, right where balboa(?) meet sierra there is a white cj-7 i believe sitting/rotting half covered beside a house. it has some slick 35"ish gubmo mudders and a warn on the front, anyone know anything about this?

^that sucks, sorry to hear it. technically, they probably had the right to deny the warranty since ownership was changed. if they wanted to practice good customer service, they probably should have at least worked with you on the price though. labor only or something like that. did you try talking to the shop manager and/or owner?

transmission warrantys are a hard thing for a shop to stand behind, especially on trucks that get used/abused. there's also the flip side where they shouldn't even offer a warranty if they're just going to nitpick at every little thing when one comes back in failed.

bottom line, i can see both sides of it.

What got snagged on the Yarcharger bumper? Probably easier to ask what did NOT get snagged on the Yarcharger bumper.

Glad you folks had fun.

I recently picked up a 94 toyota pickup, and I can't wait to start upgrading suspension and drivetrain components on it. It should be a decent vehicle to fix up for driving around Oregon Inlet this summer.

Igor please tell me you got a video of me and Ivan coming up that one spot Friday night... where Tobias in the white truck kept getting hung up...

By the way, the Yarcharger freaking rocks. All the land rover people loved it, even though they couldnt keep up with it no matter how many lockers and shit they had LOL.

jsmcconn, that white jeep on sierra is a CJ8, and i've been meaning to find out the story on it. it makes me sick just knowing it is sitting there rotting. that house with the red? J truck is where Studnuts (on NC4x4) lives or used to live recently. his buggy used to sit outside on the wkends, but i haven't seen it in a while.

they don't have low range that i'm aware of. just a center diff. lock.

as far as i know, subaru is the only company to make a car/wagon with true low range (and i own one ).

^^^

what would you ever use low range for in an AWD car (even if it did have a center diff lock for 4x4)? i mean, i guess you could wheel it, but i figure the bitchass tires, lack of ground clearance, and long overhangs would get you before the lack of low range would.

well, when you've got something as weak/underpowered as an ea81/ea82 subaru, it can be a help. i could see it being useful in mud/snow to control wheel speed at the least. going up hills, harder to stall, etc. are advantages also.

actually, my wagon has about as much ground clearance as alot of modern 4wd's. especially at the diffs being ifs/irs. they're so light too. people do some pretty wild things with them that you wouldn't think possible, go browse around the off road section on ultimatesubaru.

having low range was great in the demo derby last year. quicker acceleration, less chance of stalling it, and at one point when i had the fuel line come off the tank i was able to crawl the car around enough off the starter until i could reach back and get the quick connect fitting back on (you get dq'd if you sit still for a certain amount of time). it might have killed the battery/starter had it had the extra effort of pulling it in high range. that hardly applies to why your average awd car would benefit from low range though.

also, fwiw the subarus with low range aren't awd. they're fwd and have a hi/low transfer case just like a conventional truck.

if you really want to get technical about it, the percentage of people that actually NEED low range in any 4wd is even less than the percentage that need/use their 4wd for anything.

speaking of off-roading, i was talking to this dude the other day who said he and some buddies always hit up this trail off six forks just north of the upper barton boat launch. i drove by it today and there is definitely a trail head on both sides of the street that has recent activity on it. the guy said that very few people go out there and there has never been an issue. he said there are some tough parts that require winching unless the truck is fully locked but there are paths that go around the tough parts. he also said there is a mixture of mud holes just to play in and rock hills that actually require skill. i figured one of y'all would check it out. maybe optmusprimer could sneak up there one day since he ain't far. i ain't taking my shit off-road.

i just looked at it on google maps and there is definitely a trail. i think the part that guy was talking about is on the left if your northbound six forks. that trail goes down into the woods a bit to the lake. the right side doesn't go very far.
