hopefully the apple stores have more than the at&t stores.. macnn is reporting the at&t store on wallstreet in new york sold out its entire stock of 60 phones of course i'm sure they NYC apple stores are loaded w/ phones given the sheer number of people that go through there, but makes you wonder where crabtree and southpoint will be on the priority list 6/29/2007 9:09:08 PM |

A few thousand hardcore nerds campout, then 80% of the initial buyers slap their shit on ebay immediately, the price (and demand) drops to nothing, and people move on.
Seriously, almost 2400 iphones on ebay right now. That's fucking retarded.

People are loving their iPhones apparently...
Quote : | "It's better than I thought it would be.
The keyboard is very intuitive. I'm sure after a week or so, I'll never look back at traditional keypads again.
I've only used wi-fi, but safari is really amazing. It's just a little mini-version of the real thing. Wow.
...
And here's something that I haven't seen many people talk about... it's speedy. You can really whip through the different apps. Very smooth.
...
I'm finding myself getting pissed when I'm using my [laptop] now and it won't do the "flick scrolling". It's kinda weird how quickly that's becoming a habit.
...
I tell you the slickness of the whole experience is impressive. I think the thing that made me shake my head in awe was the simple act of taking a photo, in a mirror of myself to taunt my brother who doesn't have one yet of course, and the camera apps window opens and closes like a big old fashioned black mechanical shutter. After the image is taken, and you get the requisite shutter sound, the image scales off and fades transparently to the lower left of the screen where the button for your stored snap-shots is. When you hit that button the images slide up on a white sheet from the bottom and you can view them by taping on the small preview and they slide from the right side to fill the screen. Tap once again on the image and it gives you an icon where you can choose to send it somewhere (email, wallpaper, or assign to a contact). If you hit the email button the image scales to about 25% in the middle of the screen and the email app slides up from the bottom underneath the photo and the photo scales back up and "drops" onto the blank email screen. It also adds a note on the bottom that says "Sent from my iPhone". It is hard to convey in words the ballet that if performs to do such a simple thing but the little touches are astonishing at times.
Back to playing... " |

^^ what do you really expect when you drop something like that?
one of my co-workers got one, and i've been playing with it some this morning, here are his thoughts that he wrote:
Quote : | " I plugged it into my iPod car charger as I left the store (still had some errands to run) and it was at full charge when I got home around 7:30pm EST. I did the setup and sync process, then promptly started making calls and playing around with it. 5 hours later, with nearly continuous use on wi-fi there was still 1/2 a battery charge remaining.
During one of the in-line demos, I asked to see the email accounts and the Apple guy confirmed that the device can do Exchange via IMAP. I played around with the keyboard for a bit as well and as per the other posts up here, it does work surprisingly well. You can type as fast on it as you can on a Treo/Moto Q. You just have to trust that the auto-correct will do a good job, which it generally does. I can type 2-4 sentence replies to emails with no problems at all. As one who normally lurks on my devices and does a lot of reading/clearing out of folders, with occasional replies, it will not pose a problem at all typing on the keyboard. One thing it doesn't do that I wish it would was insert a period at the end of a word if you hit space twice (like Goodlink does) because the punctuation has to be invoked on the keyboard with another toggle key. Lets hope that one hits a software update
It supports WPA for wifi and was very intuitive to setup. It also supports VPN - L2TP and PPTP. Not sure what Cisco VPN client uses so I have no idea if I could use SoftToken to generate a connection for it. If I could, that would, um, rock! We could then IMAP our email to the device after doing a VPN over EDGE.
There are tons of little things that make the iPhone experience awesome, like deleting an email. The whole page gets wadded up and drops into a trash can - it's very cool! You see these little visual beauties all throughout the entire UI - simply stunning.
Email is one of the killer apps. It can support virtually an unlimited # of accounts - I setup gmail, .mac, yahoo, and an IMAP account for Exchange. It is extremely intuitive to nav through each of them and into your inbox and sub-folders. My .mac and yahoo folders are available from the device, allowing me to easily file items while I'm using the device (didn't check the gmail account).
Calendar and contacts will sync with Entourage or iCal/Address Book. If you're on Windows, it syncs with Outlook.
Web browsing works very well. I haven't figured out how to take a whole folder and open in tabs yet, which is a bummer. I normally sit down and click on my "1-Daily Sites" folder and open in tabs in the morning each day to catch up on the news and it would be great to launch 5-10 sites with a single click on the iPhone but it seem to be a manual process. BTW, 8 "tabs" is the current limit on the iPhone.
The device is thinner than you would expect but also heavier than you'd expect as well. Construction is phenomenal and the glass screen does a great job of providing a very professional feel.
iPod features are good - we've all seen the demos and they all hold true.
One thing that surprised me is that the device truly is as fast as you see on the commercials and the online videos. you can really fly from app to app and it puts every other phone to shame in it's speed of getting around.
Activation was fairly painless - I don't want to jinx myself, but I moved my Verizon account from corporate paid to personal and was able to LNP the # to the iPhone during the initial iTunes activation. I can dial out and make calls on it but my Verizon device is still 'receiving' all the calls. This is documented on the AT&T FAQ and I'm hoping I make it out of this limbo unscathed Knock on wood!
I haven't tried a 2nd SIM card in the device yet (someone else asked) after it was activated. My son is out of town with his AT&T card and when he returns on Sunday, I can try that for the folks that are wondering. You can pop the SIM tray out with a paper clip.
If I didn't have the Apple store credit, would I have plunked down $600 for the phone? Hard to say... Doing a lot of home improvement right now which is taking a lot of the extra dollars. Maybe if it had launched around August 24th (field commission payout), I would have But if I didn't have the credit, I'd probably still be hesitating and waiting for others
In the end, Fortune magazine nailed it when they said it is a platform that really does allow us to take a lot of the functions we do each day with us anywhere - web, email, music, and video. The web experience is first rate - very usable, as is the ipod functionality and email. I find myself away from my system quite a bit and think this device will be great for those times. I'm eagerly awaiting IM capabilities on this puppy . " |
From playing with it some this morning, it seems pretty damn slick, but it still has no real appeal to me. As long as my AAPL stock goes up, i'm happy. 6/30/2007 9:07:45 AM |

wtf, you mean to say that an ipod should break if you drop it? i mean come on now, drop testing small electronics should be one of the most thoroughly tested things, and apparently either apple did not do this, or their products can't handle the most common mishap with ANY small electronic device. no insurance on the iphone... hmmm.... i wonder why...

I'd expect that if i dropped something with a hard drive in it, it would likely break, be it a laptop, Ipod, or whatever.
Which is one reason why I won't get an Ipod until they come out with one that is fully flash (or some other solid state storage) based. 6/30/2007 9:17:28 AM |

hahaha, would you expect a to drop a laptop that sits still on a desk 90% of the time, or would you expect to drop an ipod that you carry around 90% of the time? i guess apple assume that ipod havers would nail it to the wall because it has a hard drive in it to keep from dropping it. no insurance telling me that that shit will break easily, REAL easily. things that would have a high chance of being dropped should be engineered to minimize damages, but i am sure that you do not agree. 6/30/2007 9:26:01 AM |

I don't know if you read my previous post or not, but if you did, you'd have seen that I do agree, and clearly Apple did not do this, because they put a fucking hard drive in it, which is why I would never buy a HDD-based Ipod.

i was just being facetious when i said that. all i am saying is that i have never dropped a laptop, and i have never seen anyone drop a laptop, but i know it happens. but i have dropped a cell a few times, and i have seen numerous times people dropping their cell phone, so people who got an iphone have the same chance of dropping their iphone as they would their previous cell phone. i really wish them luck with no insurance. pretty much one good drop and you have to buy a hard drive if it is out of warranty, or you are just screwed out of 600 if you can't afford a hard drive. ah, what is the warranty like on this phone... i have to look this up. oh and as far as i know (or have heard rather) it has a glass face... wow.

Are ya'll just arguing about HDD based ipods and not the iphone? or link me to the point where it says the Iphone has a HDD and not flash memory... (b/c 4GB and 8GB versions sound exactly like flash based devices)... I also wonder about the life span of this thing, 100k write cycles on a flash cell...
I'm more concerned about the glass chipping/cracking when you drop it. I drop my cell phones ALL the time, and I know that if you crack a touch screen it can become worthless very quickly. But beyond that I would think that the ipod would be as robust as any other phone since it should be all solid state surface mount stuff in there thats pretty hard to knock off...6/30/2007 11:25:29 AM |

and you can't directly download a song while on the roam, you have to go home and get it through Itunes on your PC and then side load it... hopefully they will give up on this and just give an update to get rid of it much like Xbox360 did with its 1080p settings...
My reasons to not get one are
A) I can't afford it, I'm going back to school B) first gen problems C) I want more memory and know thats just a generation away D) 2MP isn't bad, but there are cell phones out there with 5MP... and I think next gen will have at least 3MP which is all I ever really view at (although my 10MP camera is freakin sweet to zoom in on stuff with) E) Side loading vs over the air... blow me
I've litterally been waiting for this since the IPOD came out... I figure eventually they would integrate a phone and camera into an ipod... So I never figured it was worth it to buy any version of the ipod until this came out... and now they did... I just can't afford it 6/30/2007 12:09:25 PM |

Quote : | "PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Mayor John F. Street abruptly ended his wait in line for an iPhone Friday after a passer-by asked him about the city's murder rate. Street, who showed up outside an AT&T store at 3:30 a.m., left shortly after a 22-year-old sporting a mohawk asked him, "How can you sit here with 200 murders in the city already?" The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on its Web site.
Street told the man: "I'm doing my job," the newspaper said.
Street had planned to stay in line for most of the day, waiting for Apple Inc.'s iPhone to go on sale at 6 p.m. When he left at 11:30 a.m., Street said he planned to return to his spot.
The mayor said he wants the new device because he loves trying out the latest technology. Apple's new handheld would allow him to work some of the day outside the office, he said.
"We don't have to be sitting in City Hall to be conducting city business," he said.
Philadelphia recently had its 200th slaying of the year. Its murder rate is up from last year, the deadliest in nearly a decade." |

Do all ipods have a ahrd drive? Even the small ones?
and also, is it really that big of a deal that the iphone wads up a paper and puts it in a recycle bin? I'm completely happy with hitting "delete" on my phone and then it says "message deleted". I don't need to see a cheesy animation of paper wadding and getting thrown away. Also, who cares if it acts like a camera and has a "shutt animation"...big whoop... that's just added stuff they could have done without... To each his own but those aren't reasons I would be going nuts over it.

What I was told at the store when I bought the phone was that there was some sort of data on the SIM that came with the iPhone making it the only SIM that would work in your iPhone which is why you couldn't just use your old SIM like you can with most new phones.
