"Allegations of racism, misogyny, and homophobia

Imus and his crew, Charles McCord and Bernard McGuirk, have been repeatedly accused of racism, misogyny, homophobia and anti-semitism. For example, Imus and his cohorts referred to African American sports columnist Bill Rhoden as a "New York Times quota hire"[32]and PBS anchor Gwen Ifill as a "cleaning lady."[33][34]

Imus has repeatedly referred to Arabs as "ragheads."[35] He has berated many female newsreaders, most recently Contessa Brewer, which caused her to leave the show. After she left the show, Imus went on a tirade, saying, “With that fat ass she’s got, she wouldn’t be one of ‘em,” [a beautiful woman]. Imus said on the air, "That skank has to spend three hours with makeup in the morning." The tirade was also tied to comments that were overheard of Contessa's calling Imus “a cantankerous old fool” at a dinner in a restaurant in 2005, when she was still newsreader.[36] During Imus's show a producer also poked fun at poet Maya Angelou.[37]

As reported by New York Times columnist Bob Herbert,[38] in the course of a 1998 interview with Mike Wallace on the CBS News 60 Minutes program, Imus admitted telling a producer off-camera that McGuirk was hired to perform "nigger jokes."

On his December 15, 2004, show, Imus referred to publishers Simon & Schuster as "thieving Jews", and later in the show issued a mock apology, saying the phrase was "redundant". In October 1998 he described media critic Howard Kurtz as "that boner-nosed . . . beanie-wearing little Jew boy”.[39]

Imus' routines were full of anti-gay epithets, including "faggot", "lesbo", and various terms for gay sex. [40]

Imus’s defenders say that he is actually an equal-opportunity offender. He has been noted to make fun of not only African Americans and gays, but Irish, Roman Catholic, Italians, and other assorted peoples as well. [41]"

I guess what disturbs me about this is not that he had a history, but that he wasn't fired long ago.

I thought it would be amusing if the Rutgers team responded, "We don't care what that honkey thinks."

See, that would actually be funny.

I do not care what it says on teh internets, I've known some nappy headed hoes who were white.

And Imus has done more for black people than some of the nappy headed hoes found in this thread ever will.

Did I defend what he said? No, I haven't. The fact that he was slamming 18-20 year old girls who accomplished so much is disgusting. But that doesn't mean that nappy headed hoes is race specific.

You may be right, the only one who knows that for certain is Imus. I personally think that he was trying to be funny and it backfired. His comments were stupid to possibly borderline racist, but I don't think that he was being blatantly racist like some have inferred.

it's possible... but not likely

so, why can't I call the people who engage in racism "racists?" because, when you go around saying that people of a certain color can't do things that you think are OK for people of another color to do, well, that's pretty much racist...

you know, this ultimately isnt a black/white or feminist issue

the most important thing to note here, is what Imus did violated some fundamental pillars of american sensibilities.

Quote :
"don't fuck with an underdog.

and

dont kick someone when they're down"

if Imus had made racist comments about some NBA players, or even misogynistic remarks towards some WPGA players, it would have been off the radar in no time, if it would have even gotten any play whatsoever.

But here he is, some wealthy old white guy, picking on 18-20 year old gals who just came off a improbable cinderella story NCAA women's basketball tournament run. these gals were being celebrated for their efforts nationally. not to mention each of them have their own individual success stories.

that was his first fuck up.

his second fuckup was to use racist, misogynistic language that he is so accustomed to getting away with in the past. but too bad for the old bastard, too many people across the nation, white and black, male and female, found this highly offensive and disgusting.

this time he opened himself up to takign real damage from people who are sick of hearing old rich white guys who think they are above the rules of society. he went too far and offended too many people this time, and he did so in a way that was just indefensible.

Cause you see, Imus is a *mainstream* media personality. hes not Chris Rock or Jeff Foxworthy or Kanye West. his sponsors are not FuBu or NASCAR. His sponsors are corporations like Ford Fucking Motor Company. who have got enough problems without having to absorb the damage control for Imus' stupid ass.

"...the LA Times today had an interesting political angle:

Over the years, Democrats....came to count on Imus for the kind of sympathetic treatment that Republicans got from Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity.

Equally important, Imus gave Democrats a pipeline to a crucial voting bloc that was perennially hard for them to reach: politically independent white men.

With Imus' show canceled indefinitely because of his remarks about the Rutgers University women's basketball team, some Democratic strategists are worried about how to fill the void. For a national radio audience of white men, Democrats see few if any alternatives.

"This is a real bind for Democrats," said Dan Gerstein, an advisor to one of Imus' favorite regulars, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.). "Talk radio has become primarily the province of the right, and the blogosphere is largely the province of the left. If Imus loses his microphone, there aren't many other venues like it around." --Reason"

^^ how does that translate? pretty simple. The normal, non-racist people didn't give a fuck. the racist people got all uppity. => more people pissed off now than before.

Quote :
"the most important thing to note here, is what Imus did violated some fundamental pillars of american sensibilities."

you mean the same sensibilities that allow black rappers to run around calling people "niggers" and "nappy headed hoes?"

Quote :
"Imus is a mainstream media personality."

how are Chris Rock, Jeff Foxworthy, or Kanye West NOT mainstream media personalities? they are on airwaves ALL THE TIME. Just because they don't have a big ass show doesn't make them "not important" or somehow different. To me, I see foxworthy and rock as bigger people, seeing as how I've actually heard of them before...

^ it makes perfect sense. The racists weren't paying much attention to him before. Then someone lets them know "hey, this guy just called us niggers!", so the racists get up in arms. Pretty simple. if you ask me...

oh, and I wasn't aware that all CDs and mp3s were magically censored. I forgot that we have removed all references to anything similar to "nappy headed hoes" from all music, both on CD and radio

And why am I not surprised to hear a liberal suggesting censorship

^Oh, so by "racist," you meant "black." Could you explain that? By the way, every white person I've spoken to found what he said offensive...and that's ten white people.

When I mentioned censors, I was speaking about radio--in fact, I even specified with the words "on the radio" (are you stupid?). If Imus wants to put out an album of him saying I'M GONNA RAPE 'N' KILL NIGGERS! over and over again, he can do that. I'm pretty sure David Allan Coe beat him to it though.

it aint censorship. its the free market, baby.

corporate sponsors decide who they want and dont want to be associated with.

im sorry that you hate the free market so much, aaronburro.

and as soon as the sponsors of Def Jam, Loud, Interscope, Bad Boy, etc... realize they're losing money by associating with those labels, well then we'll start seeing some self censorship there too.

unfortunately for you, reality has a liberal bias. simple as that.

you miss the point, dear. censoring the radio DOESN'T STOP the rappers from putting the message out there. that you willfully ignore that fact is quite pathetic. The point is that practically none of the people blasting Imus are doing the same to the rappers who are DOING THE SAME THING. that's why it's racist. if Imus were black, probably no one would have given a damn.

the "Government" had nothing to do with Imus' firing.

^You compared him to a rapper, and I pointed out that rappers are also censored. (Interesting fact...their censorship actually varies from region to region, by the way. I've listened to the radio in CA, and they censor out the weirdest stuff and let stuff that wouldn't fly here play on...)

Quote :

Which leads me to my list of possible reasons I think he is getting so much press and is just coming under real fire now (I promised them earlier):

1. straw that broke the camel's back (history of saying shit like this)
2. Anna Nicole Smith hangover (need a horse to kill and beat!!!)
3. specific target (Rutgers team) vs. general target (black women)...grants the opportunity for specific response
4. multi-channel appeal (news and ESPN WOO HOO!!!)
5. "nappy-headed hos" is infinitely more interesting than any of his other derogatory remarks
6. has Bush and Co. fucked up lately? Cause this stuff always seems to get pushed during those mistakes.
7. so many angles!!!
