HOT DAMN WHAT AN OPENING DRIVE

This new zone blocking scheme looks sick nasty -- definitely suited for Foster.

^Yeah, that opening drive actually made Foster look like a decent back for once.

I'm interested to see what Williams can do in it.

Foster's always been a good runner ... i just feel like Henning's offense (cram it up in the gut mentality) made him look robotic, and didn't allow him to use his instincts.

Anyone who saw Foster play in college knows the guy can be SCARY good when completely healthy.

Maybe so, but I've never been that impressed with him as a Panther...never seemed to read holes well and didn't really have a burst of speed if he did get through.

Could've been the injuries, could've been the offense, but the end result just wasn't that impressive.

Well considering he's going to be a backup QB, I'm perfectly satisfied with him. He's shaky as hell in the pocket, but he's a lot faster than I ever remember him being.

David Carr was a good quarterback who played for a shitty team.

The question is now whether or not he was ruined by that shitty team.

Could they not find better announcers for this game? One could be, oh I don't know....Bill Rosinski. And Steve Beuerlein could not get anyone's fucking name right.

DaveOT I think Foster has been inconsistent but mostly due to injury...however he has had some SICK plays and games...I remember in 2004 (after our Superbowl appearance) we lost the first game to Green Bay and lost Steve Smith for the season with a broken leg..the next week at Kansas City he rushed for a shitload of yards...also you can't forget the NFC Title game in 2003...the TD rush he had...only about 5 yards if that but he literally broke about 3 tackles and dragged another defender into the endzone

but anyway, we looked pretty good tonight...good job by Foster, Biddle, Robinson, Goings, Seward, etc

So I'm watching the replay on NFL Network right now.

Not to take anything away from Foster, but I wouldn't judge how good he is based on running all over this Giants defense. They've been absolutely atrocious.

I've been watching the replay, too.

And I didn't notice the first time, but the cameras down by the bench panned behind some players, and managed to catch Curvey and Strait sitting next to each other.

I was pretty pleased with what I saw on Sat....Foster might end up being the undisputed starter all season if he keeps that up.

From SI:

Quote :
"With the Panthers at tiny Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. Or, as I like to think of it: Training Camp Heaven. Wofford is 70 miles west of Charlotte on I-85, and presents all the reasons why there is something special about taking the team on the road for camp. Three pristine, Bermuda-grass fields with a stand of tall pines on two sides and a steep hillside -- where fans sit and watch -- on another. Fans, many of them young boys and girls, lined up along the fence, getting autographs after practice. It's a scene straight out of football's past. The Panthers have been coming to Wofford (alma mater of owner Jerry Richardson) for 13 years, and I hope they never stop.

As for the weather, I had been lucky. One hot (but bearable) morning in Houston and two rainy days in Florida. But a heat wave kicked off, and as I drove out of Spartanburg in mid-afternoon, I passed a digital bank thermometer that said, 105 degrees. Ouch.

Here's the Drill
1. In August, every team is on a mission, full of optimism and blind to weaknesses that outsiders see as obvious. That said, the Panthers feel they're due. A year ago, coming off an appearance in the NFC title game, the Panthers lost left tackle Travelle Wharton and middle linebacker Dan Morgan in the season's first game and quarterback Jake Delhomme for weeks 13, 14 and 15 and still managed to grind out an 8-8 record and narrowly missed the playoffs.

"We're owed a little bit of luck by the football gods, if there is such a thing, this time around,'' Panthers coach John Fox said, as he walked from the cafeteria to his temporary office.

2. It is both uplifting and terrifying to watch Morgan try to play football again after five concussions, including the one that ended his season in Week 1 last year. He was cleared by doctors to play again, finding himself not only in the midst of his own crisis but also the as poster child for every professional football player who has risked his future by taking one too many blows to the head.

"I understand why people are interested,'' Morgan says. "I realize the situation. All I know is that I feel good right now. When I don't feel good anymore, I'll know it.'' He is wearing a special prototype helmet to lessen the impact of head shots, of which there will eventually be many.

The Panthers coaching staff has been very cautious with Morgan since the start of training camp, holding him out of all contact drills. This week, he asked to get more involved and on Monday morning, played extensively in 11-on-11 team drills with some contact. He looked terrific, much like the defensive machine who made 25 tackles in the Super Bowl XXXVIII loss to New England. "There's no question, we're a much better defense with Dan than without him,'' says Fox.

However, it is unlikely that Morgan will play in the preseason opener Saturday in New Jersey against the Giants. The Panthers are delaying full contact as long as possible.

3. In my next life, I want to come back as Steve Smith, the Panthers' remarkable wideout. At 5-foot-9, 185 pounds, Smith looks ordinary wandering through the cafeteria making a grilled chicken sandwich for lunch. On the field, he looks stellar, with a speed burst and body control that are almost unprecedented. "I knew he was good,'' says backup quarterback David Carr, "but watching him every day in practice, the things he does with his body are absolutely amazing.''

4. New offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson (who replaced Dan Henning) is a former offensive lineman. That makes him very popular with the Panthers' offensive lineman. In truth, Davidson's low-key, supportive style has been popular with nearly everyone in camp.

But it's the offensive linemen, in particular, who have taken to his emphasis on zone blocking (rather than the largely man-to-man scheme employed in the past). "As much as anything, it's just something different to learn,'' says veteran right tackle Jordan Gross. "New playbook, new things to try. It makes everything feel fresh.''

5. Looking for a potential hole in the Panthers? Try safety, where both of last year's starters are gone, after veteran Mike Minter suddenly announced his retirement this week. The starters will probably be free agents Deke Cooper and Chris Harris, but it might not be sorted out until the opening week.

Did You Know?
Panthers public relations chief Charlie Dayton is a graduate of Wake Forest University and thus became friendly with Wake basketball coach Skip Prosser, who died suddenly at age 56 on July 26. Prosser was a lifelong Steelers fan, and every year when the NFL media guides arrived in the Panthers offices, Dayton would pack up a Steelers guide and send it off to Prosser.

Insider Fantasy Tip
In his best-ever pro season (2005), Smith caught 103 passes for 1,563 yards and 12 touchdowns. Last year, he missed the first two games with a hamstring injury and told me this week he was never better than 80 percent. This year, he's healthy and shooting for 2,000 yards. This is a guy who is only 28 years old, with only five full seasons in the league. His best could be ahead of him.

Camp Confidential
Carr's story is well known to NFL fans. Drafted first overall by the Houston Texans in 2002, Carr was thrown into the fire from Day One. Carr started 75 games in five seasons (including the last 48 in a row), despite taking an unmerciful pounding, measured, in part, by his 249 sacks.

The Texans finally cut the cord and have cast their lot with Matt Schaub, while Carr is breathing fresh air in Charlotte. "I'm as happy as I've been in the last five years,'' Carr says. "It's been a relief to put that whole experience behind me.''

It's only August, but the addition of Carr could be a valuable win-win for the Panthers. Chris Weinke was unproductive as Delhomme's backup last year, and Carr has to be an upgrade. Meanwhile, Carr is happy, and it's hard not to feel empathy for his sense of relief."

Peppers talks
SPARTANBURG - The leader has spoken.

Defensive end Julius Peppers talked to the media Monday for the first time since owner Jerry Richardson challenged him to be the team leader last week.

The full story will be in tomorrow's paper and on charlotte.com. But the short version is that Peppers doesn't think Richardson's comments were intended to be taken so strongly. Peppers believes Richardson wasn't asking him to be the sole leader of the team, but to be one of several leaders along with Jake Delhomme, Steve Smith and a few others.

Peppers also said he won't necessarily be more vocal. He prefers to lead by example and let his play do his talking.

just that some of them (the deshaun foster pics) could be used in some type of comic strip type thing not as good as smith on the excercise bike but they at least all look similar

A few players to miss the Philadelphia game, possibly Peppers although it doesn't seem like anything but a stomach virus or something
